Would anyone with a copy of Hampshire Co. Deaths (Vicki Horton) be willing to look up SUSAN DAILEY WALL for me? I have been trying to find out what happened to my g-g-uncle's wife, Susan Dailey Wall, after husband William Wall died in 1863. In case anyone else is interested in Daileys, here is what I know so far. Jacob Dailey, b. 1-17-1798, d. 2-17-1860 (buried in Springfield, Hamp. Co.), m. Jane Patterson, b. 1-15-1808, d. 10-5-1885 (buried with Jacob). According to censuses, they lived all their adult lives in Springfield. Children: 1. John, b. abt. 1829, possibly d. 1911 (if it's the right guy!), m. Rebecca S. --?, b. 3-22-1831, d. 9-28-1862 i. Lelia K. or C., b. 1-3-1859, d. 11-16-1890, married a CLARK. ii. Infant son, d. 6-2-1861. I believe John served in the Civil War with the 11th Virginia Cavalry (Confederate). John may have married again; I think I've found him in Westernport, MD in 1880, living with an illegible wife, his daughter Lelia, and a stepson, James W., aged 18. I can't find him in 1870; in 1860 he was living in Frankfort with wife Rebecca and daughter Lelia. 2. Susan Ellen, b. abt. 1831, m. (12-18-1850), William WALL, b. 7-25-1831, d. 11-29-1863 (HOW?), buried in Springfield next to Jacob and Jane Dailey. i. infant son, b. and d. probably early 1850s. Susan and William were living in Westernport in 1860, with William's half-brother Benjamin F. GRENZEBACK (16). In 1870 Susan was a seamstress, living with her younger brother William Dailey; I can't find Benjamin anywhere (he may have being using the WALL name). In 1880 she was living at home with her mother Jane Dailey in Springfield, and two unmarried sisters, Elizabeth and Harriett. I haven't been able to look in the 1900 census. She is a devisee in the 1889 will of her sister Mary Jane Dailey Moore. The abstract I have names her as Susan WADE, but that might be a mistranscription of Wall--I haven't seen the will itself yet. 3. Mary Jane, b. abt. 1833, d. 1889, m. (between 1876 and 1880) John W. MOORE (his 3rd wife), b. 1805, d. 1881. Mary Jane's will mentions sisters Susan and Elizabeth, niece Lilia Clark, and nephew Reginald. 4. Elizabeth, b. abt. 1835, d. ?. 5. James P. Dailey, b. 1-19-1838, d. 5-23-1862. He enlisted in the 33rd Regiment Virginia Volunteer Infantry - Company A (Potomac Guard) on June 6, 1861 as corporal and was made a sergeant on June 25, 1861. He was wounded in action and captured March 23, 1862 at Kernstown; probably died from his wound. Buried in Springfield Hill Cemetery with his parents. 6. Harriett A., b. 5-7-1840, d. 7-22-1885, unmarried. 7. William, b. abt. 1842, d. ??, m. Jenny R. In 1870 they were living in Westernport with sister Susan Wall and a 12-yr-old boy named Malcombe Dailey. Don't see how they could have a 12-year-old son though, since 10 years earlier, in 1860, William (then aged 18) was still unmarried and living with his mother in Springfield. 8. Jacob, b. abt. 1844, d. ?, m. Thomasina ?--, b. abt. 1850 (parents of foreign birth) i. Reginald, b. Dec. 1869. There is also an 11-year-old Kate Dailey living with Jane Dailey, Mary Jane, Harriett and Elizabeth in 1870--I think she may be John's daughter Lelia K. I would be grateful for any information or insights, particularly relating to Susan Dailey Wall, but I've gotten interested in her whole family! I found a picture of an Edith GARRETT in my grandmother's photo album. I know she is related to our GARRETTS; however, Grandma just wrote her name above the picture and no date or other information. If you have an Edith GARRETT in your family line please contact me. My GARRETT family starts with John GARRETT marrying Elizabeth KING in the 1870's. Their children were: Mary Elizabeth born August 31, 1875(baptised at St. Pauls Methodist Church in Oakland, MD) Granville birth date and place unknown George " " " " Russel " " " " Nell " " " " I have been unable to go back further than that. Dear Barbara, What a brilliant idea, that never occurred to me! Thanks! The floor men are now coating our floors with polyurethane (lemon oil is apparently passe), so we've moved out to a motel--I come home (to the basement!) every day to check mail. We will finally be in the house again from Saturday evening, moving furniture on Monday, and having kitchen installed around Thursday! more updates later.... Birth and death records prior to 1900 in Mineral and Hampshire in a great deal of cases were not reported or recorded. Many of those that were, were delayed or not accurate. The old hand recorded book that was at the Mineral Co. court house was recopied some years ago. The orginal was sent to Charleston, so I was told at one time. There were several mistakes made in the new one in transcribing it. Many times the person reporting the birth or death was recorded as the parents. Dates were copied wrong etc. Anyone who has been at this family history hobby for along while will tell you of the problems with recopying of records and the number of mistakes that are made. It was not much of a concern of most folks before the 1900s as to whether these things were recorded or not. Those that were, had family bibles. Ron
Barbara, Have you found that they have pre-Civil War birth & death records for Hampshire Co? If so, how far back? Elaine balgieri wrote: > Hi Marie: > There are two places in Wv to write for older birth or death certificates....
I have been to the Mineral County courthouse & looked at their records. All that they have is handwritten in LARGE ledgers, that are very difficult to handle. It is better to write to Charleston, but takes longer, also you have to send $5.00 which is non-refundable, whether they find what you are looking for or not. But its a thought. Hi Marie: There are two places in Wv to write for older birth or death certificates. I wrote to:ARCHIVES & HISTORY LIBRARY, CAPITOL COMPLEX, CULTURAL CENTER, CHARLESTON, WV. 25305... Also to: VITAL REGISTRATION OFFICE, BLDG 3, ROOM 516, CAPITOL COMPLEX, CHARLESTON, WV 25305 Phone: 304-558-2931 To the Vital Reg. Ofc. you have to send $5.00 for each record requested & a SASE. Hope this is some help. Barbara in WV Marie Robey wrote: > Can someone please tell me what I should ask for when requesting a birth or death certificates. I had the same problem (and there was a mistake on the typed certificate, too--death given as a year earlier than the year on her obituary, will, etc.). I wrote again and asked (pleaded!) for a copy of the actual certificate, but they wrote: "We do not provide copies of originals. We only have the records in our books, which does not have the information you are looking for. We did not start to copy the originals until 1988." I did learn from this always to specify that I would like a copy of the ORIGINAL record if available--some courthouses do have those records but do not automatically provide a photocopy of those.
