Dear Kim, I don't know if there was a law about putting children together. My father was put in an orphanage in the 1920's in West Virginia with his siblings and then they were separated. There were also 7 children involved. Their mother died when my Dad was about nine. They didn't find each other again until they were almost grown. It's sad, but it did happen. Claudia

Also does anyone know if it was common practice back then that one mother had children and every child was place in the same faster care from the time if birth untill 18 years of age. Many Italians were brought to this area in the late 1800's to early 1900's to work at the Westvaco paper mill in Luke, Maryland, which is not very far from Keyser, WV. I say brought to this country, because from the reading I have done on immigrants (in general) in the late 1800's & early 1900's, I have found that many industries paid the passage of the immigrants in order to get cheap labor. Of course this was illegal, but it was done. I'm not saying that the Luke mill did this, but many industries did. Also, sometimes the men came over first and then brought the children and wives over after they established themselves. Established families would then bring brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. I found my husband's great grandfather's naturalization papers at the Rochester, NY, court house where he received his naturalization. I believe the rule at that time was that one filed an application of intent and after 5 years, he would receive naturalization. The application from Rochester has the birth dates and birth locations of every family member. Some of the children were born in Italy some in Rochester. The application also named the ship he arrived on, the date of his departure from Naples and his arrival in NY harbor. In 1902, when my husband's ancestor was naturalized, the law was that if the head of the family received his naturalization then his wife and children received it, automatically. Preferably Oakmont, Elk Garden, Keyser, area. I have death dates, but no place of burials, or obits. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Amos Leatherman was my GGrandfather, he was born 1n 1861 in Mineral County, and died Sept 13, 1897 in Elk Garden from some sort of accident. He was the son of Charles and Rebecca (Mahew) Leatherman, and the husband of Laura (Shears) Leatherman, who died in 1932, in Keyser, by a train. I would also like to talk with someone who can translate Italian into English, I have a picture of a child, and no idea who he is, only he was someone in my Grandpa Climico's family, and the writing on it is in Italian. I also have a copy of his Naturalization Papers, that were granted to him by the Circuit Court of Mineral County in Keyser,in April 1920. Is there somewhere these records would be on file, where I could get a copy of his application. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

In your MINERAL COUNTY, WV, query dated 08 May 1998, you requested information about my GGGrandfather THOMPSON ELZA, his wife SARAH WHITE, and their children which included SOLOMON ELZA, my GGrandfather. My mother was ALPHA HOLLIE ELZA, daughter of WILLIAM ALFRED ELZA who was a son of Solomon. Our ancestors THOMPSON, SOLOMON, and WILLIAM ALFRED ELZA are all buried in the same family graveyard. Only the grave of William Alfred Elza is marked with an inscribed headstone which is a crudely made panel of concrete with hand chiseled inscriptions. The graves of Thompson and Solomon are marked only by upright native stones without inscriptions. However,you can locate the grave of Solomon by going to the marked grave of my brother PAUL WAYBRIGHT who is buried right beside of Solomon. I don't know which of the unmarked graves belongs to Thompson. The graveyard is not fenced and is open to grazing livestock; it is also overgrown with mature trees. The graveyard is located in Dry Fork District, Randolph County, approximately one mile west of Whitmer, a very small village which is shown on most Rand McNally road maps. Access is by an unimproved dirt road which is privately owned(no longer by the Elza family) and is poorly maintained. The last 1/4 mile of the road is not passable unless with 4x4 vehicle. There are two male descendants of the Elza family who still reside in Whitmer. They are in their 60's or 70's and their names are: Dale Elza and Harrison(Buddy)Elza. If perchance these cousins have passed on, just ask any older local resident for directions to the old "Clay Teter/Curt Warner" farm. The road to the farm goes on through to the graveyard.

I'm new to the list and am looking for info on the ASHBY family. I see there is a FT. ASHBY. Where did this ASHBY family go? We have a Susanna ASHBY that married Jacob STEWART in Greene Co. PA. Susanna ASHBY was born in about 1818 in MD. Help! Jana [email protected]
