I was wondering if anyone on the list has access to either /or an 1870, or 1880 of Hardy County VA/WV. I'm still looking for my gggrandparent's. William Moreland, Rebecca Moreland, and John T. Moreland, plus any others in the household at the time. I found William Moreland 37, Rebecca Moreland 29, and John T. Moreland age 8 in the 1860 Hardy County VA/WV census. I also have in the death records death of John T. Moreland in 1877 at age 26 yrs. If he was 8 on the 1860 census, this could be the right one in my family. I need to know if there were any others. My gr-grandmother Ida Bell Moreland's parent's were William & Rebecca, w/JohnT. being her brother in 1860, what happened to them after that. Does anyone out there know?

Posted on: Mineral County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Mineral~/224 Surname: KEARNEY ------------------------- Lois, I don't know of anyone in my family marrying a Rowan. And Oakland has not been a place where they were known to be. What I do know is that my Michael Kearney died in 1877 and is buried in Mount Savage. His wife, Ellen Cosgrove Kearney moved to Cumberland and lived with her daughter Anna McHugh until her death in 1898. Anna, the eldest child of Michael/Ellen, lived in Cumberland until her death in 1927/8. William, the next child moved to Youngstown, OH prior to 1900 and died there in 1916. His sister, Mary Ellen, married Frank Flood and moved to Youngstown also where she died in 1913 (I think). John, the next in line disappears after the 1880 census (he was in Mount Savage then). Family lore says he married an Ellen Logsdon, but I haven't found proof of that. So, he would be a possible. And, their fifth child, my gf, Michael Patrick left the area and was superintendant of fort construction for the US gov. In that role he moved all over the country until his death near Boston in 1922. Possibly John or his children were the ones you mention. Do you have more info?

I have Kearney names in my family history--one married a Rowan. Does this info sound familiar? Lois Zelina

There is a book that was reprinted in 1996 entitled: _Major General Thomas Maley Harris ... a member of the Military Commission that tried the President Abraham Lincoln assassination conspirators... and Roster of the 10th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 1861-1865_ by H. E. Matheny Main Street Books in Keyser had copies of it two years ago when I purchased by copy. Also, a cousin of mine purchased his copy from www.amazon.com On page 275 is the following: Sgt. William Turner, Swanton, W. Va., 22. Mustered at Piedmont May 19, 1862. Died May 10, 1863, at Winchester, of disease. You can write to the National Archives and receive a copy of his military records. You must use the proper form, however. I used to have the internet page for the National Archives in DC, but no longer have it. Hopefully, someone on this list can help you with it. Hope this helps, Lonny ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 09, 2000 10:00 AM Subject: [WVMINERA] Co. Sorry... my last post was meant to go directly to "kmd" and not the list. Please, forgive me I haven't had my second cup of tea, yet. <grin>
I'm searching Valentine Daugherty and Mary Ann Kelly. Are you connected? Have we corresponded before? I have lost some of Daugherty connections that I just made this week and wonder if you might be one of them. Lonny J. My great-great grandfather who served in the Civil War in the WV 10th Company I Union Vol. Infantry was married twice. His first wife died in 1900, he remarried in 1901 and his 2nd wife was still living when he died in 1928. Could your Ellen Cosgrove be his 2nd wife? Posted on: Mineral County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Mineral~/222 Surname: Kearney, Bell, Gillen, Burns ------------------------- The muster roll referenced above lists Michael Kearney as being a resident of Westernport Maryland with five children, yet only one is present in the 1860 census, Mary, who was born 1857 and died 1900. Perhaps the family moved to Mineral county in the 1880's. And perhaps this is a different family.
Loney, I too have a relative that is supposed to have served in the Company I, 10th WV Inf. His name is Wm. Turner. According to his grave site he was a Sergeant in the above company. Can you tell me how I could find more info regarding this military company and about Sgt. Wm. Turner. Thanks Stan

I had information from the book "Guarding the River, the Canal, and the Railroad" by Jack Sanders that led me to believe my Michael had been in Company D, 2nd Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade, Maryland volunteers. Sent off to the National Archives for his pension folder. It was returned saying they didn't find a file that matched my description. Posted on: Mineral County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Mineral~/219 Surname: Bell, Hose, Gillen, Kearney, Burns ------------------------- I am seeking the father of Anna M. Gillen Hose who was married to James Hose circa 1870's and had six children, all baptized in Westernport Maryland at St. Peters Catholic church. It is hypothesized that Anna M. Gillen and her brother Larry Gillen were the children of my great great grandmother Bridget Burns Kearney by another marriage. Any information would be appreciated. There must be some Gillen cousins residing in WVA. I am the great grandaughter of Michael James Kearney and Molly (Mary) Bell. Michael was the son of Michael James Kearney senior and Bridget Burns Kearney of Westernport Maryland. Bell: Seeking relatives of Margaret Bell from MINERAL COUNTY who married Thomas Ortman in 1886 and bore Ludwig Ortman in 1887 who later moved to DC where he married a Davis in 1913. Also seeking any Pendergasts who have decended from the marriage of Bernadette Bell (my third great cousin) and a Pendergast.

However my granfathe was from Giles Co. If you have any info please let me know. Thank You, Kim
Just came across something really nice that I wanted to share with anyone who hasn't seen it yet--there is a site about the 33rd VA Voluntary Infantry (Confederate), including Company A (Potomac Guards), which was composed mostly of men from Hampshire Co., in particular the Springfield area. One section has a number of original letters, diary extracts, etc., written by Civil War soldiers, and they are fascinating. Included there are several letters written by William Montgomery of Springfield (do you have these, Susan Tyson?), which mention a number of other Springfield residents--besides providing a interesting picture of the war in general. The originals are part of the WV Collection at WV University, Morgantown (you can see the catalog for this collection online at the WV U. site--lots of interesting stuff there), and in fact three days ago I had inquired about them (I'm interested in Springfield) while requesting a photocopy of something else, so this is real serendipity for me! Enough blather--the address for the letters is http://members.aol.com/Vir33rdreg/P57-198.html. The Company A site is http://members.aol.com/Vir33rdreg/P5-198.html. You can click your way to other interesting Civil War sites from there--I think I originally found this through the Civil War Home Page or something... Enjoy!
