Hi, I've just added some Sept 15, 1911 Tribune Articles to the Mineral County USGenWeb Page. You can view these articles at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvminera/keynews.htm Enjoy! :) Patti McDonald Burlington WV [email protected] Co-Coordinator Mineral County USGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvminera/mineral.htm Subscribe to Mineral County Mailing List [email protected] Surnames I am researching: HARTMAN, WOLFE, MILLER, FLEEK, WHITEMAN, PUFFENBARGER, FITZPATRICK, COOKUS, CORBUS, DYE, WALSH
My g-grandmother was born to James Henry FLEEK and Susan Jane UMSTOT Fleek. My g-grandmother had a number of handwritten entries in notebooks listing various relatives. Based on those notes, along with research and data obtained from other researchers, I believe my g-g-g-grandparents to be Jacob Fleek and Elizabeth Spencer. I have not gone upwards yet from Elizabeth Spencer, so would be very interested in any information in that line. The info I have shows Elizabeth Spencer (1813-?) (b. in VA) married Jacob Fleek (1813-1895), and together they had the following children: Thomas, Sarah C., James Henry, John W., Harriet, Margaret Lyn, Carlina or Caroline, and Jacob T. My g-grandmother had written Carlina instead of Caroline, but she was clearly referring to the same person. I am a bit confused by another handwritten entry in my g-grandmother's notebooks regarding Jacob T. Fleek, son of Jacob FLEEK and Elizabeth SPENCER, in that she listed Harriet LEASE as a spouse...but I haven't found anything yet to substantiate that information. There are a number of Susans and a number of Carolines in the Fleek and Spencer and Umstot families...so one has to be so careful when looking at the data. I never realized when I started this research how many many many hours I would spend... but I have to admit, I love it and am still thrilled when I find new information. :) Anyway, any help anyone can be would be appreciated. Also, I am cut and pasting a partial report that I have in my database, along with sources...but am still working on verifying several things, as you will see. (Also, I have several very old photos of unidentified people, but they were among Bessie FLEEK's things, and I believe them to be family members, since all the identified photos were of family members. A couple are tin-types and the others are from late 1800s. But I digress... Here's the report I printed out: (1) 1 Henry FLEEK[1], GGGG Grandfather, F420 - -------------------------------------- Birth: abt 1748[1] Janna Hall's Gedcom file listed Helen Benter as source of Henry's name.[2] Spouse: Susan (Maybe) UNKNOWN, GGGG Grandmother, U525 Birth: abt 1776, See notes Birth Memo: See notes Since according to 1860 census for Hampshire County, VA, a Susan Fleek (age 84) was living with Mr and Mrs Jacob and Elizabeth Fleek, perhaps Susan was Jacob's mother ? ? ? That would make her born abt 1776 Children: Jacob (~1813-1895) Thomas John James Harriet Margret Virginia (2) 1.1 Jacob FLEEK, GGG Grandfather, F420 - -------------------------------------- Birth: abt 1813[3] Death: 13 Jan 1895, WV - confirm this is right Jacob, age: 82 Marr: BLACKBURN, Betsy Ann Occ: Farmer[3] Per 1860 Census: FLEEK, JACOB, age 48 M W FARMER, personal property valued at $200, born inVIRGINIA X; FLEEK, ELIZABETH, age 47 F W, born in VIRGINIA X; FLEEK, CAROLINE, age 16 F W, born in VIRGINIA; JOHN W. Possibly our Jacob? Or an ancestor of his?[4] Jacob & Susan reported death of Jacob Fleek, age 83, on 1-13-1895, which make it a strong possibility this is the right date of death for this Jacob. Research further. Janna's gedcom shows Jacob's birth as 1811 and date of death as 1/13/1895. Sources cited by her are 125 (Cathy Cadd, electronic), 126 (1850 Census - Virginia, Online Scanned Image), 127 (Deaths in Mineral Co., WV - 1866-1925, "Electronic.")[2] Spouse: Elizabeth SPENCER[2], GGG Grandmother, S152 Birth: abt 1813, Virginia[3] Per 1860 Census: FLEEK, JACOB, age 48 M W FARMER, personal property valued at $200, born inVIRGINIA X; FLEEK, ELIZABETH, age 47 F W, born in VIRGINIA X; FLEEK, CAROLINE, age 16 F W, born in VIRGINIA; JOHN W. (3) 1.1.3 James Henry FLEEK[6], GG Grandfather, F420 - -------------------------------------- Birth: abt 1848[3] Death: Aug 1911, Mineral County, WV, age: 63[7] Burial: Family graveyard on family farm[7] Per 1860 Census: FLEEK, JACOB, age 48 M W FARMER, personal property valued at $200, born inVIRGINIA X; FLEEK, ELIZABETH, age 47 F W, born in VIRGINIA X; FLEEK, CAROLINE, age 16 F W, born in VIRGINIA; JOHN W. Fleek, born 1853, living with Arthur and Elizabeth Fleek. Does that mean instead of Betsy Blackburn being g-g-grandmother, that Elizabeth UNKNOWN Fleek was my g-g-grandmother? I'm getting confused...lots more to research. There is also a Henry Fleck who in 1806 owned 18 1/2 acres at Cabin Run...wonder if he is a relative of James Henry Fleck. States: "Margret Virginia Flick was Riley. William Vause Flick Riley by her first husband. Samuel Riley." I assume that meant Margret had a son by the name of William Vause by her husband, Samuel Riley. But since Bessie wrote in the name Fleek as well as part of Williams' name, I am not sure.[6] Also, I found a William Vause Umstot listed as dying on 3/24/1870, death reported by Peter and Marg - Could it be the same person??[10] 1. Will contact Janna and attempt to get additional information, as well as sources. Intro to page read as follows: This page is for all the descendants of Henry Flick/Fleek and Susannah Varner of Pennsylvania. They moved to Virginia about 1792. Henry Flick's parents came from Prussia (Rhenish Palatinate) about 1750 and landed in New Jersey. Henry Flick settled in Somerset County (near Berlin) Pennsylvania and married Susan Varner, who came from Chambersburg, Pa. The date of their marriage is unknown, but Adam Flick, one of their sons was born October 11, 1776. Henry Flick and his wife, Susan Varner, moved from Somerset county, Pa., in 1795 and migrated to Hampshire County, Virginia (now Mineral County, W.Va.). Susan Daniels was a distant relative. Since I remember the Spencers, Fleeks and Umstots very well, I was just adding them to my data base. When your family lived in that area for 225 years they intermarried many times as you noted with the Spencers. My Allens lived in the same area and married into the same families. - --------------------------------------------------- Bill Pyles, Titusville, FL --New e-mail address: [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 30, 2000 3:47 PM Subject: Re: [WVMINERA] Spencer > In a message dated 09/30/2000 10:09:38 AM Pacific Daylight Time, > [email protected] writes: > > << I am a little confused. I am a little confused. Jacob Thomas Fleek, b 1846/47, married Susan R. Daniels, born Oct 1840, dau. of Thomas and Nancy Keller. Please keep our fellow MinCo researcher Joyce Thomas and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Her daughter Patty, 21, passed away Wednesday, and her services will be held today. Patty died after a long and courageous battle with Niemann-Pick Disease. Her sister, Christine, died from this same rare disease in 1998. I met Joyce and Patty at the hospital, and learned Joyce had begun her genealogy research in regards to her daughters' Niemann-Pick Disease. I've posted Patty's obituary on the Mineral County USGenWeb Page, which gives an address to anyone wishing to donate to the Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation in Patty's name: National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation, Inc., P.O. I e-mailed you great people 6 mos ago or so...but I've hit a brick wall so would like to ask the following: Information on John A. Welch of Antioch, born 1842 and died 1924, have death certificate in Grant County. Married Mary Susan McDonald, born 1844 and died 1908, burried in Davis Cemetary in Antioch. Family history says her father was Benjamin or Bennie McDonald of Maysville, and that she was born in Ireland and came over when she was age two. I believe that history is wrong, and since the census infor says she was born in Virginia, I have to guess that it was HER mother that was actually born in Ireland. I know there are McDonalds in Maysville, and I also have information that there was an Old Benjamin McDonald who married Margaret Hiett, but it does not list a child Mary Susan McDonald. The children of Mary Susan McDonald and John A. Welch were, William C. born 1867,Vernon born 1869, Estella Welch born 1871 (married Rodtruck),Wilbert T. Welch born 1874, Madora Lee born 1877 (my grandmother) Modenna born 1878 (I believe she did not survrive childhood), Burl born 1881 and Edward who married Maggie Cannon. My mothers mother Madora died in childbirth when my mom was just 2 years old, so all my mom can remember is that John A. Welch, of Antioch, her grandfather had a long white beard. There is some mention of him in the Mineral County Newspapers, but the entire family seems not to exist anymore. Any help would be appreciated. I do have names of children of the above sisters and brothers of Madora. My mom is 84 and has written her life story, growing up on Middle Ridge and also Berkeley Springs. Some names mentioned are George Biser, my grandfather, Nicholas Biser, Will Biser, Mayme Biser who married Bill Whiteman, for anyone with an interest in that family. Thanks again, Barbara Sheehan, [email protected]

I am wondering if there is anyone on the mailing list who remembers Ninnie (Tucker) Culp.... or perhaps some elderly person in Mineral County who may remember her. This is what I know about her. NINNIE EFFIE (TUCKER) CULP, daughter of Charles and Susan (Shell) Tucker mar. (1) Alexander Pownall; (2) Baker Ward; and (3) Dennis Culp Their children (first marriage): E.132 (Alfred), E.133 (Susan), E.134 (Anna), E.135 (John), E.136 (Richard). Their children (second marriage): E.137 (Ida), E.138 (Ada). Ada married Neff Wimer and lived at Keyser the last I knew. I do not know if she is still living. No children from third marriage. Ninnie Effie Tucker, daughter of Charles and Susan (Shell) Tucker, was born 8 August 1880, Greenland, Grant County, West Virginia (per Ada Wimer, daughter). Her name is spelled "Ninie" on the Grant County birth record, but the family pronounced it as "Ninnie." She died 1 November 1961, Short Gap, Mineral County, West Virginia (per Ada Wimer). She was buried at Queen's Point Cemetery, Keyser, Mineral County. She married (1) Alexander Bowles Pownall, son of Alfred Haney and Charlotte Temple (Hannas) Pownall, 14 April 1900, Cumberland, Maryland. Alexander was born 16 November 1873, Romney, Hampshire County, West Virginia, and died 14 February 1914. She married (2) Baker Halloday Ward, 24 December 1915, Luke, Maryland. Baker was born 18 May 1855 (per letter from Ninnie Culp to Pearl Tucker Lanham) or 21 May 1855 (per letter from Ada Wimer to Gary Tucker), at Cumberland, Maryland. He died 23 August 1920 (per Ada Wimer). She married (3) Dennis Culp, 15 September 1925. He died 7 February 1945. Names and dates included in this account are from Ninnie's letter to Pearl Tucker Lanham (except for those indicated as from Ada Wimer). Ninnie was a poet and had at least one book of poems published. An unattributed newspaper clipping obituary says Ninnie Culp lived at Short Gap for 46 years. I am trying to track down a copy of the book of poems that she published. I don't necessarily need to own a copy but want to at least see it and perhaps photocopy some pages. I don't know if anyone at Keyser (library or bookstore) would know anything about it or not. Are there any used book stores at Keyser that might know about her work? It has always intrigued me that she came from an unlettered family background but became a published poet. As a female living in that time period, it seems a rather remarkable accomplishment to me. I would like to know more about Ninnie (Tucker) Culp. Thank you, Gary Tucker

I have a Mary Jane White who married Benjamin Franklin Mayhew circa 1850, in Hampshire Co., VA. She seems to be a second wife. I don't have the first wife of Benjamin Franklin Mayhew. I have no idea who she is related to, but maybe she is from your White family. Please forgive me for the mulitply postings but someone out there has to be related to this bunch. I will attempt to do this again. I don't know how old my James WHITE was when he died in 1846 only that he died in Hampshire County m. to an Elizabeth ROBINSON WHITE b. approx. 1814. I don't know if she was his first, second or third wife. I know Elizabeth White didn't get to keep the property. I know a John ROBINSON and Elizabeth WHITE posted $200 bond for the children. I know John ROBINSON had a son Isaac and is listed on the 1850 census. Children from this marriage on the 1850 Hampshire County Census with Elizabeth WHITE ca. b. 1814 with a William and Lucinda ROBINSON living with her. Isaac.b. 1836 Sarah C. b. 1837 Mary E. b. 1839 Luke b. 1841 Virginia b. 1843 Isaac is my ggrandfather and he married Margaret JACOBS 1860 in Miami County, Ohio Children Mary C. b. 1862 d. 1894 Ella B. b. 1865 m. Agusta M. PENTRUP Martha Gertrude b. 1894 m. Albert WINTROP Isaac died in Clark County, Ohio and is buried in Enon Cemtery, Clark County, Ohio. All his second family were born in Clark County. There is suppose to be some family in Champaign County, Ohio and I was told his name was Joesph. Seems there is a Columbus, Franklin County connection to this family. That may be only because Jesse Melvin WHITE, my grandfather put children in a home there. But he was in Columbus in 1908 at 51 Rich Street also. Jesse left approx.late 1908 and he has been missing 102 years and frankly I am tired of him. I think it is time for him to meet this granddaughter he never knew he had. ;-) I corresponded with the Culture and History in WV and she wondered if my line would go back to Isaac White, the bold mountain man. "Shenandoah Valley Pioneers & Their Descendants" (Cartmell) On the 1840 Census for Hampshire there is a James White Sr. and a James White. Sorry for the long post. Tootsie
