Hello List, I am researching William Miles French who I believe was in Mercer County at the end of the Civil War. He was Confederate and was a prisoner of war at the end. They didn't want to let him go because he wouldn't agree to give up his three slaves. His wife Martha went to the prison and told them she would make sure he changed his mind if they let him go, he was down to one biscuit and one cup of water a day, and she was afraid he would die and she had children at home and needed him. They let him go. He was born in 1838 in Ohio, his mother was born in VA and his father in TN, which makes no sense to me, but it is what the census records say. I need his parents names and a marriage record for him and Martha to get her maiden name. After 1880 when they were in Cabell Co, WV, they moved to Craighead Co., AR, stopping for a while first in Lauderdale Co., TN Thanks for any possible help, Dorothy in AR
