Billie, Information on Island Creek The Race Track Schhol was the last school in operatin at Island Creek. It was located near the site of the old Stoney Run School on property then owned by Davis Thorn, which he donated for the school. This was a two-rrom schoolhouse. The first teachers here were Arnold Houchins and a Mr. Shumate, each teaching in one room of the two-room schoolhouse. The former pupils of the Race Track School tell stories of being put in a large box by Arnold Houchins when they misbehaved. Later one room of the schoolhouse was used for a classroom and the other for a playroom. Other teachers who taught there were Cleo Bridges, Lida Caperton, Bonnie Gasolyn, Odis Mann, Bessie Pennington, and Elaine Butler. The school closed three years after Elaine Butler began teaching.
