This is what I could find about Eli Thompson: William Sanders "A New River Heritage" Volume II. One of the most prominent families in this wide area, was that of Thompson, who married into the other oldest settlement families. John Thompson (son of Thomas Thompson), was born in Englad about 1700, and came first to Philadelphia and then relocated to what is now Monroe County on the upper branch of Rich Creek. His sons were John, Robert, and William, with Robert being the funder of the Island Creek Thompson's. His famous son, James O. Thompson, was born in 1756, and died in 1840. He served in the Revoluntion at the Battle of Point Pleasant. He settled in Monroe County with his second wife, Elizabeth Shantafner After living for a few years in Charleston, he moved to Mercer County on the New River to the place later known as the Jim Dickinson Place. (Dickinson Cemetery is located there on the original James McClaughtery-Anderson Shumate plantation). Later, he moved near Elgood along Powell's Ridge, which connects Elgood to the area of Hatcher. Mr. Sanders researched out the grave of this first James Thompson of Revolutionary fame along Powell's Ridge beside the road that runs from the New Zion Church toward Hatcher. The fieldstones are unreadable, and the place is almost lost in the undergrowth. The only readable stone, which may or may not be family related is Eliza Edwards, wife of M. W. Edwards (1878-1928). Children of this family included Andrew Jackson Thompson (1809-1903), who married Elizabeth French, the daughter of Isaac French, who was the son of Matthrew French: Capt., James Thompson (1810-1865), who married Lucy Allen; Phillip Thompson (1820), who married Mary Jane Risk; Eli Thompson (1829), who married Sally Shrewsbury; Elizabeth Thompson, who married Johnathan Bailey; Polly Thompson, who married Billy Miller; Charlotte, who married a Shrewsbury; Ellen, who married Squire Wiley; John, who married Elizabeth White; and Jennie, who married John Spangler Page 14: George Washington Thompson was the son of Eli Thompson, who was a brother of Phillip Thompson, and Confederate captain, James Thompson. Eli was married to Sally Shrewsbury, of the Spanishburg and Flat Top area. A sister of Eli, Elizabeth, was married to Johnathan Bailey of the same area. George Washington Thompson's wife was Susan Frances Meadows, a daughter of Sampson Gilbert Meadows and Mary Skeens of the Willowton-Christian Ridge area. .....Raymond Thompson was raised by his grandfather, Raleigh Ballard Thompson (son of George Washington Thompson, and his grandmother, Mettie Davis. Mettie was raised by Susan Meadows, the widow of George Washington, after George Washington was killed and robbed in 1916. Boys who were working for him as field hands took $1800 in gold George carried in a money belt. This left Susan Shrewsbury Meadows with the tremendous task of raising her large family. From: Mercer County History 1984 submitted by Susan Thompson Raleigh Ballard Thompson Born August 9, 1885, Raleigh Ballard Thompson was the third of nine children born to George Washington Thompson (January 21, 1858) and Susan Frances Thompson (b. February 3, 1959) daughter of Sampson G. Meadows and Mary Skeens Meadows. Their other children were Buren Grant, Vergia Delaney, Sarah Elizabeth, Delphia Florence, Beulah Estaline, Mary Gertrude, Nina Winifred and Porter Thompson. The family resided on a farm near Elgood, West, Virginia, where George's parents Eli Thompson (b) 1829) and Sarah Shrewsberry Thompson (b. 1833), daughter of Phillip Shrewsberry and Elizabeth Bailey Shrewsberry, had lived. Eli Thompson was a descendant of James O. Thompson, the Revolutionary War soldier. James wa a lieutenant under Captain Matthew Arbuckle and was stationed at the Fort at Point Pleasant, Virginia, in 1775. He was Captain of the Militia of Monroe County, Virginia, prior to 1784. George Washington Thompson was robbed and killed September 28, 1916. He is buried in the family cemetery on the farm. His wife, Susan, continued to reside on the farm unti her death February 3, 1935,. She is also buried in the family cemetery.
