    1. [WVMERCER] GENERAL HUGH MERCER's death

    3. I've been monitoring traffic on the Revolutionary War List. This message came through about General Hugh Mercer's last days of life. AUTHOR::::[email protected] Certainly was true what you said about infection, for Hugh Mercer. While I do not the extent of treatments given him, he was cared for by Dr's Jonathan Potts, Ben Rush, and a British surgeon's mate, as well as civilians. It is said Mercer asked for bread and milk poultices to be administered when he was first brought into the Clarke farmhouse. Pott's wrote 2 days later that he "scarce had any hopes for him". When Dr Rush left seven days after Mercer receiving the seven bayonet wounds, Rush thought he would live. Mercer was sitting up and holding agreeable conversations with the people there. When Mercer died two days later (nine days after the wounding) Rush attributed it to two blows to the head by musket butts during the battle. Lt. Yeates, of the 1st VA, lived about twelve days with multiple stab wounds and musket shot. John Mills
