I am trying to unscramble the 1850 census, District 39 1/2, Monroe, VA; 1860 census, Peterstown, Monroe, WV; and 1870 census, Red Sulphur Spring, Monroe, WV. Listed in the 1850 census as living with Wm and Sarah Pennington is Polly Pennington, age 30. Who is she - too old to be child of Wm and Sarah unless she is his child from an earlier marriage. Also, Rebecca I. (or J.) Pennington, age 6, is listed after Polly's name. Polly's child or Wm and Sarah's child? In the 1860 census, Rebecca Polly (surname) is age 16. How is she now a Polly rather than Pennington? Also in household is Mary M. Polly, age 15, and Allan Polly age 8. Whose children are these? Was the Polly (age 30) a surname rather than a first name in the 1850 census. 1870 census, Red Sulphur Spring, Monroe, WV shows Allen G. Polly, age 18, living in household of William J. and Sally Penington. Living next door is Wm J. Penington and Nancy. This is William J. and Sarah's son. Living in that household is Mary A. Polly.
