Author: Frances_Flick Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.mercer/819.1.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for your effort and information. I'll call the courthouse and see if I can get a copy of the marriage record I originally asked about. The second one you mentioned (ECL Flick & Ann Hale) is a great lead and I may also request a copy of that one as well - thank you! I did know about Mercer County being formed from part of Giles County but didn't know about the Tazewell addition. You're absolutely right - just knowing what a place used to be is helpful in locating ancestors. You've been a great help and I truly appreciate it. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "glenn or june hopkins" <trxndx@bellsouth.net> I am coming to Mercer/Summers Counties last of this month or first wk of next month for some more research on Farleys/Hopkins. My sweet wife is allowing me $65-75 money to purchase some geneology material; books, tapes, or ? My specific search and interest now is the Post Civil War life of Levi Farley and attempting to find one or more of his present day descendants who might remember some old family stories passed down through the Farley families. In particular, finding a family historian who might remember something about my grandfather three generations removed. I only have A.A. Hopkins old book, out of print, and a few odds and ends presently. With all that said, here's my question. Would/Could you recommend something for me for that small amount of money that I could add to my geneology library? Also, where in Princeton, Hinton or ? can I purchase said material? Could you recommend a/some book stores, catalogs, order houses, etc where I could spend my allowance? As you know, many of the good old books are out of print and collectors charge more than I could pay. Sorry, didn't mean to write a book. Glenn trxndx@bellsouth.net

I know that they charged me about $10 for a certified copy. They also made uncertified copies of marriage/birth information on a form and they didn't cost as much. When I was there doing my own research, they gave me a few copies of the forms and I filled them out myself. The information I gave you was from the books at the Mercer County Courthouse in Princeton. You can also request records from the West Virginia Health Statistics Center in Charleston, WV. See that information at www.wvdhhr.org. I'm not sure that they would have the records or not. You can speak to someone in Vital Registration by calling 1-304-558-2931 Monday thru Friday between the hours of 9 AM and 5PM. They are required by law to charge $10 per search. There are 2 different copies of the Mercer County history book that have been helpful to me. I know our library in Chesapeake, VA has a copy of the first book. Also the library in Princeton has a good geneology section. You can also contact the Mercer County Historical Society. I can't remember how much they charge to do research. I know it's one price for members and a different price for non-members. Let me know if I can be of anymore help. There is also an earlier marriage. I'm not sure if it ties into your research. 31 March 1873 ECL Flick, 17 yrs, single, born Mercer County, W VA, son of John M.N. & Ann M. Flick, female, died Aug. 8, 1860 of flux at age seven months and 26 days, daughter of John M. N and Ann M Flick. Born in Mercer County. My Death Book goes from 1853-1882. Nancy is the only Flick listed in the book. I have a copy of the Mercer County History Book published in 2002. I didn't see any information about the Flick family. There were several pages about Hale families, but I wasn't able to tie it into Ann Hale. The earlier Mercer County book is out of print and hard to find. I don't have a copy of it. Did you know that Mercer County was formed as a Va county, in 1837 from portions of Giles and Tazewell Counties. I just wanted you to know this because sometimes the people are listed as being born in Giles County and they really never moved far, the name of the county just changed. Sometimes knowing that can help you in your research. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. There is also a good website for some lookups. Better for death certificates than marriages, but records are being added pretty often. I have found lots of death certificates for my lines. The site is www.wvculture.org. I too have been to the courthouse in Princeton. I used to get certified copies, but I would rather have the copy of the page in the book now. Usually those copies are pretty inexpensive. If you are lucky enough to know the information you can send them a request & check & they will send you what you need. They have been very nice to work with, when I have needed them, but it is a very busy courthouse. Busier than a lot that I have been in for some reason. A lot of genealogist working in there too. Would there be any volunteers who would consider cleaning it up. >From the mid 1970's my uncle, Earl Hopkins and myself would spend hours cleaning, cutting, spraying and repairing the headstone of Mr. G.Wash Reed, placing white half-blocks where old creek headstones were, put up a four by eight sign and a memorial to our loved one, Pvt. Simeon D. Hopkins, there. One year later the sign was shot up, torn down, Mr. Reed's headstone was broken in several pieces, many half blocks were gone.
