I am still here at 4littlebs@comcast.net My offer still stands to help anyone with Woodlawn names. I will be going Monday for a new friend of mine. I would be more than glad to help but I need names, and dates are also helpful. I will NOT do an entire family name..such as the "simpsons" or the "sizemores". You must be specific or atleast give me something to go on.(a birthdate, deathdate..etc) I'm sorry, but Woodlawn will not give me a printout of entire families but they will help me find a specific person. I hope you all understand. Alicia Brown
Glenda, I've put every combination I can think of in the place for a query and cannot get anything. What would I put in the line to gt to the archives? It states to give the name of the list I am looking for but nothing works. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Again. Glenda, thanks for the URL for the archives for Mercer Co.. What I have missed is the three years that I was using Earthlink. The tech??? deleted everything and I can't find anything in that time period. He messed my computer up so that sometime when I click on a URL once and try to go to another to enter some information I can't get the first one to come back up. This thing is driving me crazyier that I already was. Will try again and see what I can find. Thanks and Keep In Touch. Donald, no I didn't get anything fromAlicia about the Woodlawn Memorial Park. If she sent it between June 1 2005-July 2007 all of that mail was deleted when the supposedly tech's from Time Warner hooked up my computer to the Road Runner. Everything in that time period is gone, names, addresses, incoming mail , outgoing mail ETC. Haven't been able to get any of it back. Sure would like to get some info about Mercer Co. birth's, marriages, death's ETC. Having a hard time getting anything from up there. See if you can get intouch with Alicia and see if she will send it again or something. Thanks for everything. Barb, thanks so much for the information. This is exactly what I wanted to know. I think if that is the law now, perhaps laws would have been even more lenient between 1915 and 1953. If so, there is a good chance my grandfather is buried on his own property. Too bad there are not tighter controls on these old cemeteries. They are so precious to us. Again, thanks! I appreciate your time. Glenda ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
About 8 months ago, (In Mercer County) a family had a child and it died at birth. They buried their child on the family farm with a fight from the state but it happened. The fight was over water. Seems you can open a grave anywhere as long as it doesn't interfere with the water ways. Not sure on all of this but that was what our neighbors and an argument over. The child has a nice fence around it and is in a sunny meadow. Also a few years ago I was looking for a cemetery and went to the court house again in Mercer County and they do not have to keep records on cemeteries. Only mention of cemeteries is when a person purchases a piece of property and a cemetery is on said property you do not have to now the name just mark that there is a cemetery and a right of way. Thanks, Alicia, for your input. I suppose I should be grateful that the probable grave site is so far out of the way and overgrown. Maybe civilization will be held at bay for a few more years. There is a man in Surry / Stokes Co. NC who has made it his lifes work to try to identify and preserve these types of old graveyards. He has been successful for the most part. I remember my grandmother and other "adults" talking together about this person or that person who had buried a child on their property, and not in a "recognized" type graveyard. It seemed the thing to do then. I doubt most folks could afford to buy grave sites. A lot of my ancestors are buried in the Bowling Cemetery in Spanishburg. I often wonder what the connection was between the Bowling family and the Lawsons. Perhaps friendship as I have found no blood connection. I assume the Bowlings were kind enough to give up part of their land to bury local folks. Someone does a nice job in maintaining it too. I would say this is legal, although I'm not entirely sure. My grandfathers first wife died approx. 1910, she is buried behind his old family home, there is no marker or anything and now it actually looks like part of a coal road that runs behind there. Athough the road isn't in use, I think it's still so sad. Alicia
I think I know the cemetery you are talking about! There is a public cemetery up there. We searched it several times over the years. There is also another small, private one fairly close by. It was on private land when we tried to see it several years ago. My cousin, who lives in the area, finally talked to someone who lives there and they denied knowing anything about any Lawson graves. I could be wrong about this being the same cemetery. Not living there those back roads can be confusing. I can't wait to hear what your aunts have to say. In spite of all the overgrowth we also found our grandparents spring. Isn't it amazing how some things seem to last forever. Like the tulip she had planted. My grandmother never returned to the property after my grandfather's death in 1953. She spent the rest of her life living in Spanishburg with her daughter, Beulah Lawson Green. I have several uncles and many cousins who have died from black lung. A lot have also died of various cancers, supposedly from poisoned water, air and land left by the mining operations. What a waste. My maternal grandparent's (Kelly Wm. and Molly Gullion) house used to be on a hill overlooking Shawnee Lake. When we were there in 1999 we discovered it had burned down and a trailer was in its place. We had stopped by in 1990 and again in 1996 and tried to get the people living there to let me see it one more time, but was refused. So it was quite sad in 1999 to find it gone. You're right...those memories. I look forward to hearing from you. Glenda ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Glenn, I noticed the mail about this person and his family's grave site. I wonder if you have ever heard of "Grave Dowsing". It is like some people did a long time ago to find water for a well. WELL, you can find a grave site or buried bodies the same way. If the place that William Lawson and family is known approxamatly some one can find it with a simple dowsing. Take a wire coat hanger or welding rod and straighten the coat hanger and cut either in half. make a bend about three or four inches on each. Hold the rods with the long portion out in front of you parral as and walk around an area that you suspect may be a burial ground. The rods will cross when you go over a body (animal or human). When you leave the site the rods will staighten out again. Go the length of the body east and west and tell the height of the person. Hold one rod with a forefinger in the crook of the rod and let the long end dangle down. When you go aver a body the rod will circle clockwise for a male and counterclockwise for a woman. Don't believe me, try it on your wife or children lying on the floor. Have found lots of graves and determined the gender and approxamate age of each person. Found a lot of animal graves the same way. Try it and let me know what you think. No we are the Meadows, Ritter, Testerman, King, Orender,Shuck,Anderson, just to name a few. Anyway Grandma and Grandpa lived there until early 70's when we moved them to a retirement trailer park. First time they had running water, bathroom, and electricity in the house. Grandpa was also a coal miner, and lead the singing at the Methodist Church and sometimes he was a mortician. I did talk to my aunt tonight and she said that if she can remember correctly that there is a cemetery up on the Mountain above Matoka. She said if you go to where the old Railroad depot was cross the tracks there was a road that went to the top of that mountain and it was up there. She is going back down in a couple of weeks and said she would double check it then. She is also going to talk to my other aunt tomorrow after Church. A couple of years ago we went back home and I got to go see Grandma's old house. The mountain is sliding down but a couple still live in it. He also has black lung and his wife calls him a walking dead man. Granny's spring is still there and the water was just as cold as I could remember it. I actually brought a bottle of it back home with me. Oh the memories........
