The U S Census bureau has their own system of maps and even in 1990 the District once known as Rock District to the census takers covered a lot of territory. Thats why historic census maps are GOLD and rare finds on Ebay etc. Here's a link to the current day district lines. http://ftp2.census.gov/geo/maps/trt1990/st54_WestVirginia/54055_Mercer/90T54055_001.pdf LeeHash@aol.com wrote: I am listed with my Mother, Father and little Sister in the 1930 Census Records. a Mr. Bailey was the Census taker and we were living in Rock, Mercer County on April 5, 1930. Mr. Sands I'm very sorry to hear of your wife's passing. Will keep you in my prayers. God luck with your genealogy search. Cookie Carey Cooper cookiecooper01@comcast.net "Being Irish I have an abiding sense of tragedy that sustains me through temporary periods of joy"
Sorry, was just too young to remember names. Interesting that one time I went down the steps to the road where some men were working on s car. I asked them if my Daddy was there and they, being polite, told me that I should find out his name and they might help. Daddy was all the name I knew. I rushed inside and asked Mother what Daddys name was and she told me Everette. It was strange to learn a new name for my Dad. I was only about age 2 -1/2 the time. We were only in the Matoka area for a year before moving back across Tam's Mountain to Bud. Lee Hash Culpeper, Va. **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Hi Lee, Do you happen to remember any Pillars or Scott's in the area at the time you were living there? Hi all, Do any of you researching the Rock area know of or heard of any Pillars or Scott's? Fronie (Cynthia) Pillars Scott was my ggrandmother and died in 1926 after chilbirth. Her mother was Lottie Pillars and her father was Charlie Pillars. They lived in Rock most of the time. She is said to be buried in Freeman at Oakhill cemetery. I went there last summer but I couldn't find her grave. My grandfather (Henry Cochran)lived in Rock up until he died a few years ago. When you get to Montcalm you turn left on 11 towards Ashland and Crumpler. His place was just after the old McComas tipple and before you get to Windmil Gap and Cherokee. I also have a cousin that lives in Rock but to get to her place you turned Right in Montcalm on Main st. towards Sandlick Rd. to Rock Rd. Could never figure that one out seeing as there are other towns between them. My family always stayed in the area where my grandfather lived so I assumed that was the Rock they referred to in the census'.
