As for searching the Mercer County cemetery's, I used Findagrave.com and had some luck. Several cemeteries are on private property, others were so overgrown the search is difficult. We looked in 2006 for Oscar Harrison Pennington & Sarah (Octavia or Gusteva)Thompson Pennington but had no luck. Locals were helpful but few knew family history. I'm looking for a Jordon (Jordan/Jerdon) Meadows who was in Mercer County in around 1870. He fathered an illegitimate daughter, Nellie Mae Frances Perdue born Mar 03, 1870 in Mercer County. Her mother was Rhoda Catherine Perdue, born Feb 1850 in Giles County, Virginia. There are several theories as to why "Catherine" and "Jerdon" didn't marry- the most common that they were closely related somehow- but I have found no evidence of this and am now leaning toward the idea that Jordan may have been married at the time. One way or another it was a taboo relationship. There is a Jordon Meadows born about 1798 who married Susannah Payne- could this be the guy?? He was in Mercer at the time and the only Jordon "Jerdon/Jordan" I can find in the county at the time. IF this is him- not only was he married but a good deal older than Rhoda Catherine Perdue. Does anyone have any resources outside of ancestry that might be able to see if there are any more Jordans in Mercer around 1870? Any help would be appreciated. Kerney Walker and Clara Stanley had at least one child. The Beggs cemetery includes at least two children of Kerney, but does not name them. The 1910 census enumerates McGinnis C. (age 27), Annie E. (age 26), James A. (age 8), Alzie E. (age 2) and Chester J. A. (age 1 year, 3 months). All were born in West Virginia. He was a farmer. They had been married 4 and a half years, and 3 of her 4 children were living. The 1920 census records Kirney (age 37), Anna (age 36), Alva (age 13), Stone (age 9), Ollie (age 7), Anna A. (age 5), Ardela (age 3 years, 7 months) and Kerney W. (age 1 year, 5 months). Also in the home was Arthur Mann, step-son, age 18. All were born in West Virginia. He was a sawyer for a lumber mill, and Arthur was a laborer in a coal mine. The 1930 census lists Kerney (age 47, married at age 25), Ollie (age 16), Arelia (age 14), Woodrow (age 11), Burrel (age 8) and Gomer (age 6). All were born in West Virginia. He was a truck farmer. "Gomer G. Walker, 79, of Bassett, died Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at his home. A West Virginia native, he was born on July 25, 1923, and was a son of the late Mcgenis Kerney Walker and the late Annie Mann Walker. He was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Walker. He was retired from American Furniture Company. Surviving are his wife, Madeline Walker of the home; two sons, J.D. Walker of Stuart and James Walker of Bassett; four daughters, Mae Mosely of Newport News, and Ilene Burnette, Evelyn Gilman and Linda Knott, all of Bassett; one sister, Ardelia Harmon of Bassett; a half-brother, Johnnie Walker of Florida; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Bassett Funeral Services chapel by the Rev. Eddie Hawks. Burial was in County Line Church of God of Prophecy Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Tony Walker, Shannon Knott, Shannon Walker, Charles Burnette, Ronnie Turner, Brad Joyce, Lewis Underwood, Thomas Gilman Sr., Derek Walker, Bryce Walker, Shawn Knott, Mike Joyce, Doug Underwood and Robbie Underwood."
