Good for you Barb...lots of cemeteries out there in sad shape...not enough people who care like you do... ________________________________ From: Barb Duncan <barbduncan@yahoo.com> To: WVMERCER-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, May 22, 2009 2:15:44 PM Subject: [WVMERCER] Martin-Fisher Cemetery in Pembroke, Va Hello, I hope I am not doing anything wrong with this post. One response is all I need to know not to do it again. This e-mail is concerning the Martin-Fisher Cemetery in Pembroke, Va. In the last 4 years my sister and I have lost several family members. The latest was our Aunt Phyllis Martin Hancock, daughter of Robert Orbe and Gloie Virginia Hilton Martin. We lost our grandmother the next month after the passing of her daughter. To get on with my message…My sister, nephew, husband and I went to Pembroke to check out the cemetery after Blue-Jay Stevers passed away he was the keeper of the cemetery. It was in the most horrible state. As the four of us went in and made a task of cleaning, it took us 3 weekends in a row to clean the brush and get the ground where it could be mowed. This week we went back to the cemetery to start the process all over. The cemetery both the Martin and the Fisher side are ready for decoration this holiday or birthdays etc. I have a request if anyone is reading this and has family buried in either part of the cemetery to please contact me or my sister and give us information on who your family is and if you know of someone buried there that has no marker and can give us a guess on where they maybe buried so new can mark their grave or add them to a memorial we are planning we would appreciate the information. Although it provided no info on graves and did not show in the 2 Mercer Co History books I found a ref to a "HALL-GOTT Cemetery" in Princeton, WV. Possibly check with a funeral home in Princeton. I have checked the cemeteries listed in the three History of Mercer Co books and can not find Andrew Gott or that cemetery. I do find references to his coming from Ireland and being a CSA Capt in the Giles Co books as well but still no burial. Do you have a death date? There is an "Unkown died Aug 1879" under Gott in Summers co Hilltop Cemetery. Supposedly, James Eber Wiley was the father of William Blane Basham and yes he fought in the Civil War. He was my gg grandfather.
Who was the father of William Blane Basham? Is this the William Blane Basham who served in the 60th Virginia Regiment during the Civil War? William Blanes son was William Joseph Basham.
Hello Kimberly and Joel! I descend from William Blane Basham who lived on Panther Knob which lies on the Raleigh-Summers-Mercer lines. Would this William M. Basham be a child of William Blane Basham. He returned to the area after his service in the Con- federate army. Any connections with my William Blane Basham is appreciated. I do know that his third wife was Julina Lilly who had a child named Rhoda. Author: mabeone Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.mercer/889/mb.ashx Message Board Post: (photo) REIDSVILLE - Mary Ruth Watkins Owen, 1711 Ashley Loop Road, Reidsville, N.C., passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the age of 96. Graveside services will be at 11 Wednesday morning, April 29, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with Reverend Grover Holder officiating. Mary was born on October 1, 1912, in Oakvale, West Virginia, to George Washington Watkins and Maggie Jones Watkins and lived most of her life in Rockingham County. In 1930, Mary graduated from Stoneville High School from a class of 12 and lived to be the last surviving classmate. Following graduation, Mary worked in various textile mills and silk mills in Martinsville, Virginia, Fieldcrest Mills, Karastan, and Carolina Woolen Mills. In 1934, she married Ezra Levi Owen and they spent the next 20 years working in textile mills and air plane factories. With the onset of World War II, she went to work as a timekeeper at Fairchild Aircraft in Burlington. They later moved to Baltimore, Maryland and Marietta, Georgia, where she worked for Eastern Aircraft and Belair Aircraft, respectively. She spent the last 20 years prior to retirement alongside her husband, working on their tobacco farm, which was a lot of hard work, but yielded a lot of happiness and fond memories for the two of them. In 1940, Mary joined Mount Hermon Baptist Church and held many positions during her membership, including Sunday school teacher and WMU leader. Mary was a prayer warrior who believed in hard work and had a strong compassion for serving the Lord. Mary came along during a time when it was difficult to further one's formal education past high school, but nevertheless realized the value of education. As such, she was a repeated and anonymous contributor to the RCC Foundation. She was not one to seek attention or recognition, but believed in helping others who tried to help themselves and felt that RCC was both a blessing and an invaluable resource to the county. Mary never gave old age a thought; "she said she knew there was a time to be born and also a time to die". Being blessed with both longevity and an intelligent mind up until the last few months before her death allowed her to share countless stories, memories, and personal experiences of how the world had changed throughout her lifetime. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ezra, of 62 years; and her son and daughter-in-law, William Ronald and Dorothy Huskey Owen. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Owen Carroll and husband, William of Reidsville; four grandchildren, Ronya O. Streckfuss and husband, Andrew of Spring, Texas, Gregory H. Owen of Tennessee, Kevin T. Carroll and wife, Kelley of Pfafftown, N.C., and Brent O. Carroll and wife, Mary of Kernersville, N.C.; four great- grandchildren, Caroline D. Streckfuss and Elizabeth A. Streckfuss both of Spring, Texas, Calen J. Owen of Washington State and Owen T. Carroll of Kernersville; two sisters, Nancy A. Watkins of Stoneville and Virginia W. Fain of Reidsville; two brothers, Leonard E. Watkins of Reidsville and George A. Watkins and wife, Pattie of Eden, and a very special thank you to a dear friend and care giver, Mary Woodall. The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, April 28, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home and all other times at her residence. Memorial contributions may be made to either Mount Hermon Baptist Church, 1551 Ashley Loop, Reidsville, or to the Hospice of Rockingham County, Wentworth, N.C.
