In reply to [email protected] re. Mercer Co. history - My mother's family was from Mercer Co........ Her maiden name was Bjork (my grandfather emigrated from Sweden) and she and her brothers and sisters attended a school near Princeton named Carper School. They actually lived in Oney Gap, which I understand still exists. During my mother's day, there was a post office there. My grandmother's family name was Ratliff and I still have distant cousins, etc., in the area. I am interested in knowing more about the Carper School - does it still exist, where located, can I get old records. Etc. I wondered it there might be some info on the school in the books you have. Sorry to be so long winded. Thanks again in advance for any info you might locate. You can reply to list or to tree062539aol.com (Joanne E.)
Hi Charlotte, I just signed up for this list this weekend. I have been on the Melungeon List, the Ball surname list, Hill surname list, Farmer surname list and didn't get any useful information. That's why I tried signing up on some of the location lists to see if they are any more helpful. I have some information about the Loverns including some who are buried in Lovern Cemetery. If you send some names I will see if there is anything on them. Linda,Roanoke,VA
To billie39 I have information on an Eli Thompson who married a Sally Shrewsbury. Could this be the same couple you are asking about? I don't think you can get a copy of a marriage license without paying for it. However, if you think this is the same couple I have quite a bit of information about them. Let me know and I will send you what I have. Linda,Roanoke,VA
I'm sorry, the only Lavender mentioned is Sarah married to Dean Goins son of Howard and Nicatie White Goins. I have some other books for that area and will check for Lavender in them. Linda,Roanoke,VA
They are published by the Mercer County Historical Society, PO Box 5012, Princeton,WV 24740. Hope this helps. Linda,Roanoke,VA
Hi, Is this list active? I haven't received anything since I signed up except the notice when I signed up. I have on loan two books "Mercer County History" 1984 and 1987 editions. If you think there might be something in the books that would help you I would be happy to look. Linda,Roanoke,VA Researching HILL,BARKER,MILLS,SIZEMORE,WALKER on father's side and BLEVINS,DOWELL,BALL on mother's side of family

I think it was Doddridge (?) that charged me $7.00. It was worth the time and effort it took me to start random calling. Plus, I got to know the area a little. Kim Carlton

For the person asking about Elgood Cemetery, I have some ancestors buried there and I have Bowlings in my line. Jesse Bowling married to Sarah Robertson/Robinson, their son William Bowling m. to Elizabeth Perdue, their son Jesse Isaac Boling m. to Jane Scott, their daughter Mary Jane Boling m. to Allen Meador Willliams. Is this any help? Mary Ellen
Thank you! Pam
Does anyone remember a woman, or have her on your family list, named Spicy Taylor? She lived around Princeton, and was a wonderfully funny wild woman that gave me great childhood memories. She was one of my grandmother, Minnie Hall Munsey's best friends. Thanks, KIM
