Dunford 1/15/1880-1896 The first Duncan family came to this area in the late 1800's from Carroll Co., VA James Dee and brother Dan came in wagons over dirt roads. James Dee found a job laying railroad track to Crane Creek, met a beautiful Indian maiden, Alma Dunford (Parents were of the Blackfeet and Sious Indian tribes), married her and began a family. Children were Lewis Alva, Ruby, Grace, Eunice, Lester, Woodrow, Buddy and Wade. Ervin Houstin Dunford was born July 16, 1909, in Montcalm WV. Dorothy, I just got an e-mail from Bob that said he checked and the books are no longer available. They were both published by the Mercer County Historical Society, one in 1984 and one in 1987. The contain information - probably some incorrect - from people that live in the county and submitted the information to the Historical Society, along with some other information that was probably in the Historical Society's records. The is considerable information in the books about French and Clay families. Especially about the Clay children that were attacked by Indians. Linda,Roanoke,VA

Hello, Thank you so much for looking. I have a Spurgeon (Maybe Miles Spurgeon Taylor who married a Reba Hines. Also James C. Taylor m. Margaret Justice in Princeton, Mercer Co. Also looking for a Charles Taylor m. Anna Hamm and Joseph Taylor b. 1826. Most of these folks were from Grayson and Wythe counties, and got married over in Mercer Co. Joseph and James served in the 8th VA CAV and they were mustered out at Princton, I believe. They went in at Crumps. For Linda from Roanoke - regarding the Mercer County Books. Can you tell me something about these books and where they can be purchased? I am researching the Mitchell Clay and Matthew French families of Giles and Mercer Counties. If the books contain information about these early pioneer families, I would like to purchase one. Are they different editions of the same book? Are they the typical county histories published by local historical/geanealogical societies. Usually they cost abt $60 - I don't want to make the investment if there is no information about my families. Thanks to you or anyone else for advice and info. Thompson (born 4/1865) married _______Hanks A. A. thompson, a son (born 1866) R. L. Thompson, a son (born 1868). F. T. thompson, a son (born 1869) Virginia Thompson (born (1873) Charles Thompson (born 1876) Walter Thompson (born 4/1878) Granger Harmon Gore (born 1844; died between 1861 and 1865).
