Linda, I see you checking Pennington's, do you have anything on a Gordon Pennington born 8/7/1832 in Mercer Co. Va. Who married Julia Ann Belcher, 1/10/1853 in Mercer Co. daughter of Lewis Belcher and Rebecca Dillon.I am also researching Hartwells, Faggs and Surfaces in Mercer Co. Thanks, Sylvia, NC
Good morning, May I respectfully request that we discontinue using this genealogy list for posts that are volatile and could easily enflame some readers. I belong to another list that deals with spirituality, and when this post appeared, a flame war erupted. I myself was moved to write a rebuttal to Ms. Minor's conclusions and suggestions. I only wish my father were still alive (a 4th generation Mercer County man). He could have written the rebuttal much more eloquently than I. What material does this series of books contain? Does it have information on the Bailey family (i.e., Richard P. Bailey and his offspring)? In the 1850 Mercer Co. Census there is a Hiran Pennington 52, Nancy 40, William 22, Eliot 20, John B. 17, Sally Thomas 16. Also, George W. Pennington 25, Jane 22, Wheeler 6, William M. 2, Henderson Petrey 16. I know that there was a Pennington that married Eliza Meadows. But as luck would have it I can't find my notes on what Census I found them in. Eliza I believe is a sister of my husbands grandmother. I'll keep looking for the dates and the rest of the info on this Pennington. Nancy [email protected] wrote: > Hi Julie, > > There are several William Penningtons in the books. No, I'm sorry. I don't. Miss Ella wrote quite a long article about the town of Athens, in which she conducted the reader on an imaginary tour up and down the several primary streets of Athens. She commented on each house along these streets, and used that as a spring board to comment on the families who had lived there through the years. My recolection is that Miss Ella personally had no intention to publish this work. It was several years after her death, when the Mercer County Histories were being published, that her sister submitted the manuscript. I think it was probably about 20 years old by that time. Miss Ella lived to be about 96, and lived her entire life in Athens, except for about 20 years in young adulthood when she studied and taught in New York and in Italy. She was a marvelous and beloved person, who of course knew absolutely everyone in Athens. And they all knew her. If anyone else has any memories of Miss Ella, I would love to see them posted to the list.
