    3. Hey, all, out there, especially, in the eastern U.S.::::: Isn't it opportune that the weather may be preventing some us from doing other chores, and, we have more time to do our history search. But, I want to recognize that there are a lot of the members of our list that are having bad times, right now, because of this storm that has done havoc in some areas. Arthur Davidson

    3. Shirley, as long as I have had this book I hadn't noticed that in the back. Thank you. the funny thing is that the Relocation map and the list from the Corp of Engineers only list is that they done show any more than 24 cemetery. I wonder if some one else took care of the other cemetery. I wonder who has the listing for the other cemeteries? I guess and I am back to the drawing board. Some of the cemeteries I was looking for is in the ones that I don't have. Even the Owner of the trick seem to differ from what I have. 1. [WVMERCER] NO Mercer Co. Tribes
    2. Glenn Belcher
    3. HiYa Kim and Mercer Listers! I.M.H.O. I'm not aware of any tribes being represented in Mercer County WV in the late 1800's and early 1900's. There may have been individuals who descended from tribes, but I don't believe any large Indian tribe was in the county during these periods. The only knowledge I have of tribes, is the SHAWNEE who used a small area around Lake Shawnee. It was very close to the site that the CLAY massacre took place. They used this site in their hunting travels and had a burial ground there. Recent archaelogical digs un- covered several items that proved their presence. The SHAWNEE, for the most part, disappeared after the white set- lers began invading the area. By the time Mercer County became a Virginia County in 1837, only one account is made of a citing of any Indian presence. =================================================== =================================================== Where there tribes in Mercer? If so what tribes? In the late 1800's and early 1900's were there any Native Americans that still lived in Mercer? If so what were the last names they went by? What nationality would they have appeared as in censuses? Mulatto? Thank you, KIM

    1. [WVMERCER] GENERAL HUGH MERCER's death
    2. Glenn Belcher
    3. I've been monitoring traffic on the Revolutionary War List. This message came through about General Hugh Mercer's last days of life. AUTHOR::::[email protected] Certainly was true what you said about infection, for Hugh Mercer. While I do not the extent of treatments given him, he was cared for by Dr's Jonathan Potts, Ben Rush, and a British surgeon's mate, as well as civilians. It is said Mercer asked for bread and milk poultices to be administered when he was first brought into the Clarke farmhouse. Pott's wrote 2 days later that he "scarce had any hopes for him". When Dr Rush left seven days after Mercer receiving the seven bayonet wounds, Rush thought he would live. Mercer was sitting up and holding agreeable conversations with the people there. When Mercer died two days later (nine days after the wounding) Rush attributed it to two blows to the head by musket butts during the battle. Lt. Yeates, of the 1st VA, lived about twelve days with multiple stab wounds and musket shot. John Mills

    3. Arthur its so odd when I read your listing. After posting a query on this same website I received an email from a gentleman who lived at McComas from 1942 - 1954. Just this past weekend I learned from him that McComas WV used to be called Mannering. He plans to email an article that appeared in the Bramwell Aristocrat in 1992 concerning McComas. Both he and I are now on a quest to learn more of the history of McComas. I myself was born and raised in McComas lived there from 1946 - 1965. I went to school with WEBB, BEGGS and PARSELL children and they all lived on Windmill Gap a community that was on a mountaintop above the Crane Creek section of McComas. I suspect if you got your hands on the school registrations for McComas High School alot of the names you have listed would be there. The last I heard some of these same families still live in the area. I have an aunt by marriage whose maiden name was WALKER (from Windmill Gap also) and her mother's maiden name was BEGGS. I'll try and contact her to see if she has any additional information I can pass along to you. I graduated from Bramwell High School in 1963 (McComas High School was closed in 1960 due to a low enrollment count) and attended school there with several DAVIDSON children also. Also members of the PIGG and MABE families lived on Windmill Gap.
