    2. Thanks for the info on Monte Vista. I'm afraid it's not the place I'm looking for--my folks are buried in Freeman. I wish you well on your search for volunteers to transcribe. 1. [WVMERCER] Monte Vista- three volunteers now
    2. Robert Perry
    3. Dear List, We now have three volunteers to collect tombstone data for Monte Vista cemetery. This encourages me that we probably can get at least ten volunteers, the minimum figure I believe would be necessary to do the job. More would be great. If you are available and able, please respond to me, or to the list. This would be done in good weather, of course. And could be done on your own time schedule. I forsee each volunteer being responsible for a specific section of the cemetery.... and persuing that goal independantly. These are the three who have volunteered so far: Ron Dawson <[email protected]> Barbara Duncan <[email protected]> Robert Perry III <[email protected]> Thanks so much, Robert Perry

    1. [WVMERCER] Freeman, Mercer Co, WV Cemetery
    2. Greetings! My ggrandparents (Raleigh Giles WILSON & Alia Anne WALTERS WILSON) were buried in Freeman, Mercer Co, WV (1892 & 1920). At this point that's the only info I have on their deaths/burials. I know there's a "historic cemetery" located in Freeman and am hoping that just maybe I'll find them there. Can anyone tell me the name/location of any Freeman cemeteries? I will be making several trips south in the next few months, and if I can locate THE cemetery, I'd be willing to transcribe a portion of it for use by anyone interested. Thanks in advance, Kim in Ohio [email protected] Searching for HALE, WILSON, WALTERS in Mercer Co, WV

    1. [WVMERCER] Monte Vista Cemetery--volunteers needed
    2. Robert Perry
    3. Dear Mercer County List members: We now have two volunteers to work on collecting tombstone data for Monte Vista Cemetery..... myself and Barbara Duncan (see below) Is anyone else interested and able? I believe it would take a minimum of ten volunteers to make this a viable project. Volunteers would work as they had the time, with no pressing time schedule. I'll be glad to be the chairman or coordinator. I think each volunteer would take responsibility for a certain section of the cemetery. Essentially, it would involve walking from grave to grave in that section, writing down the data from each tombstone, and typing it after returning home. Please contact me, or respond to the list, if you are interested and able. Thanks, Robert L. Perry III 400 Valleydale St., Apt E8 (Colonial Gardens) Bluefield, VA 24605 540/326-1557 Below are the two voluteers, so far: Barbara Duncan <[email protected]> Robert Perry III <[email protected]> - ----------------------------------------------------

I am normally a substitute teacher and caretaker for my Mom but I have decided to take a job as a census taker this year so that I can: 1) say I did it and 2) do a better job than at least half the censuses I have ever had to read in frustration! ; ) Yeah, I know they are better forms now, but I want to do my part in recording history. 1. [WVMERCER] WV Legislature
    2. Ed & Phyllis Griffith
    3. The West Virginia Legislature is again considering a bill (SB 90) which should be of interest to all genealogists with ties to this state. The bill deals with public access to cemeteries located on private land. The bill would ensure that family members and genealogists could not be denied reasonable access to those burial sites and cemeteries. You can download and read a copy of the bill which passed the WV Senate and was sent to the House of Delegates for consideration at: ftp://129.71.161.247/ftp-senate/SB90%20SUB1%20ENG.wpd If after reading the bill you are in agreement that it is a good bill, please send an email expressing your support to the members of the House Judiciary Committee at: [email protected] and entering the delegates name in the subject line of the message. There has been one recent change in the Committee membership, substitute Delegate Arley Johnson for Delegate John Pino. You can find the members of the committee at: http://www.legis.state.wv.us/House/hcom.html A similar message should also be sent to the Speaker of the House Robert Kiss and the Majority and Minority leaders. This bill was also up in the Legislature last year but died in a committee, we should urge the legislators to act quickly and get the bill out before the rush at the end of the session. Those of you who actually live in WV should also email your local Delegates. To keep track of the Bill go to: http://129.71.161.247/bill_status/2000/Actions_House.cfm and enter 90 in the box. Please pass this along to other interested individuals. Ed Griffith
