Hi Sandra, Sorry I took so long to get back to you, I was out of town. Now I am trying to catch up on email. I think the Gordon Pennington you have must be a different one, my Gordon E was born 8/7/1832 in Mercer Co., VA. son of James Pennington and Martha Waddle. I will be on the look out for another Gordon, they certainly used the names over and over. Thanks, Sylvia NC
I would like to ask if anyone on this list would be willing to look up an obit for me. I would of course pay for your time and costs. I just today received the death certificate of an uncle: WILLIAM HENRY MEADOWS who was born July 22, 1877 in Mercer County WV and who died January 30, 1935 in Wise County. He lists his parents as John W. Meadows and Ardelia Davis, both of West Virginia. Because I can find no death record for his sister and my line: Dianna Meadows Stidham (d 6/20/1920), any information on this obit would be greatly appreciated. Dianna was also born in Mercer and died in Wise County VA. In addition, I am finding a few of the children of Harvey D. Meadows and Victoria Meadows who I think also started out in Mercer C ounty and end up later in Wise County VA. Thanks. Will be glad to trade time with a KY obit search too. Roseann

Looking for members of the BONNER family in OHIO, in particular, relatives of MILDRED BONNER. My reason: I have family member photos going back to early 1900's, some in original folders of the period. GALENA, OHIO school class group photos. Large (3" thick) album of all types of cards, sent by family members. My desire: Give this family history treasure trove, to a deserving genealogist, OF THIS FAMILY. Proven family lineage will be required. Some of this family attended Galena, OH schools. Some may have taught school there. There may be a link to Columbus and Lancaster residency. Hi Listers I'm a newbie to your list and wondered if there is anyone on line who has cemetery listings. I'm looking for any information on Homer Roberson Taylor who died probably about 4-8-1987(?) at Bluefield. Sorry the information is so scarce but that's all I have except his parents were Sam and Maggie Taylor. Any help much appreciated, of course. Regards Bonnie in Idaho

Good evening, Does anyone know of the following book, and from whom the submissions were obtained? The History of West Virginia, Old and New Published 1923, The American Historical Society, Inc. Chicago and New York I have recently seen two (2) biographies containing information on two (2) of my ancestors. In both cases the information was at least suspect and in one case the genealogy is at odds with proven research. Both of these bios were uploaded to a Rootsweb archive. NOTE: I find no fault with the submitter(s) or the archivist(s). But I would be willing to bet that the bios were written by an overly zealous descendant, or that the bios were embelleshed by an inventive editor. It does not surprise me that the style of writing is the same in each biography. The subjects of these two biographies were not related, but their grandchildren married, making the subjects of the biographies my gggg grandfathers. Now, back to the original question: does anyone know of this book and its reputation? Does anyone know if the biographies were submissions on the part of descendants? Thank you, Bill Hobbs

It is strange that those few monte Vista graves were listed in MCH. Perhaps someone on the list knows the reason behind that. But Monte Vista is a very large cemetery, and that's the reason its never been catalogued. Monte Vista and Roselawn are owned by the same Cemetery Management company, today. I don't know if Rest Haven has any connection. Again, perhaps someone one the list can explain. Robert Perry [email protected] wrote: > Hi all, > > Is Monte Vista Cemetery a large cemetery? This cemetary may well be the "Bluestone Baptist Church" built in 1890 on land donated by the "Booth-Bowen Coal Company". Its located on the left (setting on a hillside where there is a horseshoe turn in the road) as you being your journey onto the "River Road" from Route 52 heading towards Montcalm. Freeman is located directly on the other side of Route 52 within sight of this church and graveyard. Pat Smith 1963 graduate of Bramwell High School. I rode this route to school every day from McComas, WV where I lived. I also located this information in "The Diary of a Millionaire Coal Town by Marth Jane Williams Becker." In Reference to and in part: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Dear Kim, Monte Vista is in Mercer county, WV half way between Bluefield and Princeton, at the community of Green Valley. It has about 6500 graves, was founded in the mid 1920's, and has been thought of by many as the premier cemetery for Bluefield families.>>>>>>>>>>>>>> You can find Green Valley mentioned here on this WEB Site: http://www.topozone.com/default.asp Use this site to find any community, ridge, hollow, creek regardless of the size. Once there a click on the map or edge of the map will navigate you at about a mile or two any direction. You can also right click on the screen and get a menu that has the zoom selection. This will take you in real close. But you will notice that these maps are put together in squares and you will have to follow this zoom procedure on each square until you get all the squares to size. Type in Bluefield (do not put in the state). A menu will pop up and select Bluefield, WV and your map will pop up. Read and follow the directions. If you like this site you may want to receive their Newsletter once every two weeks. It explains in the latest issue how to get around a problem of printing the map. I like using the 1 to 25,000 size, which will take you in so that you can actually see the homes. I found the home where I was born in Boissevain and those I lived in since in Abbs Valley and Richlands. These maps download to your computer very fast but if you copy them to clip board as they suggest for putting them in your image reader or photo program for printing they can exceed 1 Mb or more of space. I use this site extensively for locating land grants and etc. A wonderful and interesting site that is free and is getting better all the time. Robert Crabtree (formerly of Tazewell County, VA)
Sorry to disturb the whole list... I would like to thank the kind person who sent me the TopoZone site for finding cemeteries, etc. (I was looking for a cemetery in Freeman). I still had your message open in front of me when I unplugged my computer. (I was trying to cancel a 100+ page print job by unplugging the printer, and I reached for the wrong cord!) When the computer shut down, I lost your message, but fortunately I had already bookmarked the site. Thanks again for the site. Sorry I couldn't thank you personally. Kim in Ohio [email protected]
