Hi all - I'm curious, who is the "Wright" for whom Wright Mountain is named? Is it Francis Wright, from Ireland? I have an ancestor who settled there but can't find any mention of the origins of the name. Thanks for any insight! Lauren Shutt Anchorage, Alaska

Thanks to help from others here I found that to be untrue. Now I find he had a second "wife" who DID die in a car accident. Only the information doesn't seem to make sense. In the death notice for Helen (Glass) Wood, it says Roland Galliett was her son-in-law. The 1940 census also shows him as widowed and living with his in-laws. In the 1930 census he was living in D.C. and also listed as a widow. The confusing bits? Helen's death notice from 1946 says her daughter Margaret preceded her in death on Sep 15? Maybe the newspaper erred slightly and cut off the year of 1929 as Margaret died on 18 Sep 1929. But if she was married to Roland, why does the death certificate for Margaret show her as single? The article about the crash also shows her with the last name of Wood -- not Galliett. Perhaps Roland and Margaret divorced before she died? Would he still be considered a widow or a son-in-law to her parents? Maybe they were engaged? Were engagements considered the same as being married back then? He must have been very close to her parents to have moved back to live with them and run their gas station together for over 15 years. If you have any ideas, I'd be interested in hearing them. Maybe I have the wrong daughter and one of Helen's step-daughters was the one who died on 15 Sep 1946? I couldn't trace all of them - presuming some died young. Oddly, Helen also died in a car accident. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He was in Bluefield in the mid 50's(1954-1955 at least) and is possibly related to the family living there. He was in and out of prison so he does not appear on the local indexes for those years, but it does not mean he wasn't present. He was married. His surname could be spelled "Porkorney". In 1879 she gave birth to my 2nd great-grandfather Hiram A Melvin but cannot seem to locate his birth record or her marriage record to identify his father. In the 1880 census they are listed as boarders in the home of Anderson Fletcher and his daughter. I have not been able to find any records from the 1890 census. By the 1900 census Margaret had 8 more children (one deceased) all with the last name Melvin and she is listed as a widow farmer who owned her own land and properlty. I have not been able to locate birth records of any of her children, any marriage for Margaret, or even her own birth record (I'm not even sure if Melvin was her maiden or birth surname). It has been long rumored in our family that Hiram, and possibly the other children, were the result of an affair between Margaret and a member of the Fletcher family she border with and I want to be able to confirm or deny that theory.
