My Murphy forebears apparently were some of the first settlers up what we call Gary Holler. My great-great-grandfather Herndon Murphy, wife Polly and his family (including my ggrandfather John Anderson Murphy, Sr. and his wife Mariah nee Shannon) initially obtained grants (around 1850) for land in the main Gary area. In fact, a large tract of their land, and possibly the site of the "old homeplace," was defined by the Tug River, the Adkin Branch (holler where the old Gary High School football stadium was/is located) and Grapevine Branch (small creek running eastward off the Tug from Wilcoe). USSteel apparently owned the land for years, but I gather that is no longer the case. My question is both general and specific: Is there an authority on the history of that area and does anyone have a clue if there is an old cemetery in the area? FYI, I'm aware that John Anderson Murphy, Sr. and wife subsequently moved to present Skygusty and I'm fairly certain they are buried in a small cemetery on Totten Ridge, i.e. the ridge between Skygusty and Anawalt. This isn't the cemetery I'm trying to locate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and "Regards," from Brenham, Texas Pat
