    3. Hello all: There have been several messages about the Welch Daily News. You don't have to go to Welch to read the back issues that are still in existence because many of them are on microfilm that can be ordered through your local library by interlibrary loan. More about how to do this in a moment. Before the Welch Daily News there was the McDowell Recorder. This was a weekly newspaper that was published between 1891 and 1943. The Welch Daily News began publication December 3, 1923 and is printed yet today. Also, in McDowell County there was the McDowell Times. This weekly newspaper was published in Keystone between 1904 and 1941. It was a negro paper that contained some local news but had a good bit of content that focused on people and events from a much larger geographic area. In Iager the Industrial News began publication in 1923 and was still published in the 1980's. While Bluefield is not in McDowell County, the newspapers there often saw themselves as regional newspapers. The principal paper was and is the Bluefield Daily Telegraph which began publication in 1893. I have located information about my paternal and maternal grandparents - the Bank and Ofsa families, who lived in Kimball, Welch, and Keystone - in the Bluefield paper. You need to get hold of the following two-volume set: Library of Congress Catalogue, NEWSPAPERS IN MICROFORM: UNITED STATES 1948-1983. In this publication, listed by state, are the names and information about all known newspapers published in each city in a state. Some of the listings go back as the 1700's. So, dont be fooled by the dates listed in the title. Those dates refer to the years that were updated since an earlier publication. In these volumes you will find listings of the newspapers published in a state and which organizations in that state or elsewhere have have microfilmed copies of certain of the newspapers' editions. For example, West Virginia University has on microfilm the Welch Daily News 1923-1929; 1932-1942; 1944 forward. Microfilm copies of the paper are also held in the Archives of the West Virginia Historical Society. Once you have identified which editions of a paper you want to read, your librarian an help you start the process to get the film containing those editions through inter-library loan. If your genealogy interests also go outside West Virginia and you need to search newspaper records, use the same process for look-up in other states. I hope this information in helpful. Best wishes to all. medbank@showme.missouri.edu (male) Gail Bank, Columbia, MO
