Good Evening Sherry, ===================================================================== I have a great grandmother buried at a Mitchell Cemetery. the address on the funeral card says Hensley,WV. Is this the same cemetery? ===================================================================== I just checked my WV atlas and found Hensley in McDowell County. I've also found it on the map. It lies due north of Roderfield which lies on U.S. 52 northwest of Welch. Sherry, I'm forwarding this on to our McDowell List which you're with already. Perhaps one of our 43 subscribers could clue you on exactly where it's located. You never know - a cousin may be awaiting you !! WVMcDowell List Owner & Moderator Glenn Belcher commander@inetone.net
ATTENTION TO ALL MITCHELL CLAY DESCENDANTS AND HISTORIANS! Our Mercer County Historical Society received an update on the progress of our "Clay Memorial Project" Tuesday, April 28th. The current property owner has surveyed the area at the Mitchell and Phoebe Belcher Clay homesite and cemetery at Clover Bottom, outside Princeton WV. Mitchell and Phoebe Belcher Clay, were one of the earliest known families to settle in the Virginian frontier. Their children faced a massacre, burning, and a near scalping in the Shawneee Indian attack in the 1780-90 time period. He has agreed to designate .76 acreage for the cemetery at the original Clay homestead. Virtually nothing remains of the known grave markers nor names at this time. Assistance on anyone known to be buried here are most appreciated. Negotiations for additional acreage are ongoing. Attempts to set up a Clay Memorial Trust are being established now. Once the trust's details are finalized, an announcement is sure to follow ASAP. For future details or questions regarding this project you may contact us at P.O.B.5012 Princeton 24740 or contact me at >commander@inetone.net> mercerwvhistorical List Moderator WVMERCER List Owner & Moderator Glenn Belcher of Princeton WV

Hi all: I have several early photographs of the business area of Kimball that I would like to date historically. Key to this dating is to know when the railroad tunnel was completed. I know the pictures are prior to 1930 because I remember that the bank was the business closest to the tunnel and railroad track. The building closest to the tunnel in the photograph I have is the Kimball Drug, Co. To the right of the drug store are two unidentified buildings, then there is Wagner's Exchange, and to the right of that is Banks Department Store. The photograph shows heavy snow on the ground with the curve of the highway on the right and on the left are two railroad tracks that converge leading to the tunnel. I will greatly appreciate any information any of you might be able to share on this subject. Thanks. medbank@showme.missouri.edu (male) Gail Bank, Columbia, MO

Very cordial employees. Yes, there is someone there to assist you. Yes, they do have census records; they are on 35 mm film which they will load for you to view. You make the copies as you view them (they are $.25 per copy) and you pay a cashier when you are ready to leave the library. I don't know about the other records you asked about, but I also viewed (on film, of course) old newspapers. Very interesting. The courthouse in Welch is also an excellent source for marriage, death and birth records. They are open from 9 - 5. They will also make copies of records for you, but I think their rate is about $2. Hope this info helps. Barbara

How much are copies? Correct change? Is it worth the trip? Or should I plan on going some where else? Any info would be appreciated. Jenny

Since I have been having a problem getting my msgs transmitted, I am trying once again. Please forgive me if you have already received this. I'm for searching info on my g-grandfather James (Jim) STANLEY, b. ca. 1850 in VA (which is now WV). Married Amanda M. Harman in Jan. 1875 in McDowell Co., WV. James' parents were George B. and Lucinda STANLEY. I think he had a brother, Avary (not verified) and there were possibly other children. I have been at this dead-end for almost three years. James and Amanda STANLEY probably lived all their lives in McDowell Co. Amanda died in McDowell Co. in July 1933. Any info at all would really be appreciated. Thanks, Barbara
