My McDowell surname is DILLION. Cathy
I'm researching the surnames Blankenship, Crabtree and Waldon. In the latter two cases it appears that the families I'm researching entered the county after the turn of the 20th century. Researchers : I need help with a problem that might ring true with many on the list. I have been searching for over 30 years for the first wife of my JOHN W>COLLINS. He appeared in his father's household on census reports and in court records of Pike Co. til about 1820. It is then I figure he left the household to marry his first wife tho I could never find out who she was. A couple years ago I was sent a file and in the middle of reading it I let out a war-hoop ........There was the first wife. LYDIA TONER! ( since that day I discovered John Collins M Lydia Toner in Grainger Co. TN 8,1821...found "Early Marriages of TN" ) I was thrilled about this everything seemed to check out however a person using FTM has presented their family history and the CD says this John is the son of Griffin Collins ( due to fact that Griffin signed marriage bond ) My John W. is son of Meredith Collins and children of John found in a family bible are the same as those of John and Lydia Toner. The census of 1850,60,70&80 Tazewell and McDowell Co. Va/WV adds to the confusion as there is an entry of a John and Lydia ......and a John and Mary "Polly" both John's being about the same age, born in same state, and Living both in the area of Peeryville District. Also John and Lydia had a son named John Jr. and John W. by his first wife whoever she was also had a son named John W. Jr. My question is......since I was never able to find a marriage record for my John and Mary.....is it possible that my old gggrandpa was keeping two households going at the same time? Can anybody help me sort this mess out? John W. b. 1797 Va. d. after 1870 probably McDowell Co. WV married 2x's 1) ______2) Mary "Polly" Roarke/O'Roarke Children's name from Bible: Children of John and Lydia Toner (census) John W. Collins Jr. 1. John William Collins 2. Jacob Jacob Collins 3. William Benjamin Collins 4. Benjamin Margaret Collins 5. Margaret Cicil Collins 6, Ira Ira Collins Alfred Collins b. 1853 Tazewell Co. Va Arnetta "Nettie" Collins b. 1855 Tazewell Co. Va. Richard Collins b. 1858 McDowell Co. WV (my line ) any help appreciated.......Is this a match or not? Brenda Collins Dillon
Brenda, We've been in contact with each other before in my search for Merriatt Collins. My Merriatt had a son John born between 1870 and 1890. I haven't been able to find more info on John yet. The Collins family I am researching lived in McDowell Co. If you run across any more John's, please pass them my way. Any lead may pan out. Thanks. Good Morning: I am new to list so want to introduce myself. My name is Brenda Collins Dillon. Perhaps some of you have visited my website ,"AppalachianMountain Families" The site mainly deals with my father's Collins roots and his possible Melungeon background. We have tried to turn the site into something for everybody and we are always adding new files and more Melungeon research. What brings me to McDowell Co. are the surnames COLLINS-ROARK-GODFREY-MULLINS Today I am searching for John and Polly Collins who according to 1860 census of McDowell Co. resided at Dick's Creek. I am searching for factual record of parentage of John W.Collins. I believe his father was Meredith Collins but have no record of proof. Also "Polly" seems to have dropped out of the sky. I thought with the name "Polly" her name was Mary but in past weeks I have heard her name was Rachel, and another person wrote Mary Edna O'Rourke. JohnW b. 1797-1802 probably Russell Co. Va. d. after 1870 Possibly McDowell Co. ( appears on 1870 census ....not on 1880 ) Oh yes, Does anybody know where Dick's Creek is or was? Any and all help is welcomed. If anybody connected with this line or has found a record that might prove helpful I would really appreciate an email. Thank you, Brenda Collins Dillon ......aka..Bj
I am looking for information about some folks who were in Welch, McDowell, West Virginia in 1920. The 1920 census lists Bert E. Downs age 41, his wife Marie (Howland) Downs age 40 and his mother-in-law, Anna (__) Howland age 73, along with their 3 children, Bertis, Eugene and Edna. He had a drug store in Welch. I have a couple of generations back on the Downs line, into Greenup County, KY, but am interested in finding out what I can on the Howlands (who are from New York state according to the 1920 census) as well as Bert's date and place of death and burial, their life in Welch (is there extant information on the drugstore?), and any information on descendants. The son, Eugene, apparently stayed in Welch (his residence at the time of death, 15 Aug 1989, was listed as Welch on the SSDI), and the son Bertis went to Virginia at some point; grandson Bertis, III was a pastor but I don't know what denomination or where he served. I'm looking for John Frank and Marinda JOHNSON of Big Creek, McDowell Co., WV. Would be delighted to exchange information about descendents of him and his 1st wife in VA. John Frank's parents were Walter JOHNSON and Mary BARB of Washington Co., VA; He was born c. 1832. He married Julia ELLINGTON in Washington Co. VA prior to the Civil War, and their children were Robert, James Nathaniel (b. 1862), and perhaps a Mary Francis (b. c. 1857). After the war (or during, by other accounts), John Frank and Julia headed West to Illinois, then returned to VA and seperated. John Frank went to Welch WV and married Marinda ? who was age 16 in 1870. By 1880 his daughter Mary F. and son James Nathan are there in McDowell, along with children Alice (8), Frank (6), Nannie (3) and Walter (4 mos). Julia lived out her days in Mendota, VA. John Frank was the clerk of the circuit court in 1880, and his son James Nathan was a deputy clerk. But by 1884 James Nathan was in Tazewell Co; I descend from him. John Frank is quite an enigma - I'd love learn more about him and the offspring of his second family. The Johnson descendents of his 1st two sons tell varied conflicting stories about him, never naming his 2nd wife, claiming he abandoned the family when James Nathan was 3 days old (but his military records show he was hospitalized when that son was born, remaining there for several months thereafter). There's a sordid family secret here, I suspect. Any insight? Rees Chapman

After the war (or during, by other accounts), John Frank and Julia headed West to Illinois, then returned to VA and seperated. John Frank went to Welch WV, Julia and sons ended up in Mendota VA. I descend from James Nathaniel. John Frank remarried, and had daughters Sadie (m. ? DANIELS) and Fannie (m. ? GRUNDY), and an unknown son, apparently living out their years in Welch. John Frank is quite an enigma - I'd love learn more about him and the offspring of his second family. The Johnson descendents of his 1st two sons tell varied conflicting stories about him, never naming his 2nd wife, trying to make him sound like he was a Confederate soldier, but the timelines don't work - he may have actually fought for the Union - might explain his settling in WV after the war. There's a sordid family secret here, I suspect. Any insight? Rees

Does anybody know where I might get copies of the Census Records for McDowell Co. (West) Virginia beginning in 1860 and also of the book, entitled "First Families of McDowell County (West) Virginia," compiled by Norma Pontiff Evans? Thanks, Barbara
