If any one needs information from the Welch Daily News , you will find them courteous, knowledgeable, and helpful. You should not expect to much as most of the newspaper archives have been distroyed by fires. This is common so I have been told for most of the McDowell County news agencies. The Welch Daily News started publishing in Dec 1923. If there are any members on line who belong to the McDowell Historical Society. I need information concerning a mine accident resulting in deaths approximately July 15, 1923 in McDowell County. I am seeking the name of the company, the mine name or number, the location of the mine and any information concerning the causalities. I lost my grand father in this accident. Thanks for your time, Bill Mele
Hi to Bill Mele and All, I have recently heard different stories regarding obtaining records from the McDowell Co. WV Clerk of Courts and thought I would share; About 2 weeks ago I wrote a letter to the Clerk of Courts and asked for a copy of a 1909 marriage license application and I was shocked to receive a copy from the clerk within 3 days! I did give them the year that the marriage occured and only asked for one copy. The clerk was even nice enough to write me a handwritten note explaining they could not issue me a certified copy of the marriage because the marriage license was NEVER returned to the courthouse by a minister. I did send them a check for $3.00 with my request. Just thought that I would share. Thanks, Doug in Columbus, Ohio.
Hi. I would like to share information with anyone researching Wyatt or Yates. Both originating from N.C. Thanks, Sue jack.rumburg@mci2000.com

It is my understanding that The Heritage of McDowell County, Part II, was sent to the publishers around the first to middle of July, but don't know when the publication release date is. I have pre-ordered a copy for my father-in-law for a Christmas present, so I hope that it will be out by Thanksgiving or so. ---Stephen Phelps. Glen, Could you look for any info on COLLINS, MCCORMACK or MCCORMICK, and DARBY? I'll take any scrap I can get. These people are so illusive. Thanks for your time!! Hi everyone, I am Bill Mele and I am searching for information on my grand parents who immigrated to McDowell County from San Giovanni in Fiore, Calabria, Italy. They lived in Welch, Havaco, and JenkinJones WV from 1906 through approximately 1940. My grandfather died working the mines and is buried at the cemetery at JenkinJones. I am looking for the following surnames: MELE, JACONES, and MILENASE The only problems I have encountered have been in dealing with the Vital Registration Division of Health, Charleston, WV. Most WV web sites refer you to this office for records dated after 1910. After a long delay they sent my paper work back and sent me to McDowell County were we all know records are a mess. Apparently they can't find anything either. Nice to meet you all, Bill Mele

DATED: 7-23-98 Glenn and the Gang, Maybe copies of our complaints should be sent to the governor's office so his staff can find a way to properly preserve these documents. This problem didn't happen over night and it may be to much for the staff or the staff may be misguided and understaffed and unable to cope. Genealogy is important to us but maybe a low priority for the McDowell Clerk of County Commission. I like many others would like to help but I live in North Carolina. Maybe these records would be much better kept if maintained at the Vital Registration Office, Charleston, WV. I really don't consider this a cure only a possible way for the records to be protected. My one time experience with the Vital Registration Office is they don't even know what they have. I don't know what they would do with more. Anyone know about the other counties? Do they have similar problems? Has anyone considered using the historical department at the colleges. Maybe they would like to help handle the project of cataloging, organizing, and proper storage of these records. Micro filming might be a solution though I lean toward computer cataloging. This system has made my searches real easy in North Carolina. To all members thanks for your inputs I have enjoyed reading about your searches and problems. Thanks for your time, Bill Mele cn2369@coastalnet.com
FORWARD ANY REPLY DIRECTLY TO: Stephen Phelps: phelps@iswt.com My wife's paternal grandfather, Robert Gordon BARRETT, was a Marshal (don't know whether it was town marshal or U. S. Marshal) in Iager (McDowell County, WV). He moved to War (McDowell County, WV) in 1924, so it would have been, probably between 1914 and 1924. Anyway, according to "family information," he was involved in a shoot-out in which at least one person was killed. It was after this incident that he decided that law enforcement was not for him. Does anyone have any information or know where I might begin to check? Thank you in advance. ----Stephen Phelps.
