He was married to Lake ?? and had three kids--Ester, Shirley and Beatrice. They lived in Iaeger during the 1930s and probably much earlier than that. He had a half brother Charles Guy Lane who lived across the street, route US 52, from the Gorden Family with his wife Viola thomas Lane and five boys and one girl. My line of research includes Lane, Blevins, Sexton, Wagg, Thomas mostly in Grayson county, VA and Ashe County, NC. I would be happy to share information with you. Ralph Lane crlane@erols.com

    1. [WVMCDOWE-L] Re: Curtis & Clarissa Coleman of Avondale
    2. Hello fellow searchers!!! I am trying to find the tombstone of Curtis and Clarissa Coleman. According to Curtis Coleman's pension records, he was burried in Avondale and died 1 Jul 1908. His wife is also burried there and died 9 Nov 1909. Curtis is a Civil War Veteran and I would like to have a Veterans' tombstone for him. Curtis and Clarissa's children were: Sherman, Sheridan, Adam, Julie and Melvina Catherine who was known as Kate or Catherine. Paris Jones, husband of Catherine along with David Davis & wife Caroline (Clarissa's son from her first marriage to Adam Davis) both took care of her before she died. Clarissa (Charles) was first married to Adam Davis. He died in a prison camp in Saltville, Va during the Civil War. Clarissa and Adam's children were David and Sytha. Sytha married George Washington Rowe. A family story tells of how Clarissa had a trading post during the Civil War. She rode to a fort in KY to get salt for the area when they were out. If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated. Heather

    3. ========================================================== ========================================================== PLEASE! Direct you replies to Tim at: <timucua@excite.com> This is a repost from the Mercer County List. E-mail him. ========================================================== ========================================================== I'm searching for my Mercer County line for many years and not had much luck. I went in person to the McDowell County where my grandfather was born. The courthouse there said they don't have them. I'm unable to document both my grandfather Abe Peters b.1898, and his father, Luther Peters, born 1870. Right on the back of my mothers birth certificate it states her father was born in Mohawk WV (McDowell CO.) I was able to obtain any death records for the two at the Charleston WV Archives. Godspeed, Tim <timucua@excite.com>

    1. [WVMCDOWE-L] 1890 Census Records
    2. Glenn Belcher
    3. We really do need the 1890 Census, however, this was burned in 1921. At the time, the census schedules were located in the basement of the Commerce Building in Washington, D. C. Even though the fire was contained, it flooded the area. The damage was not assessed until the following day, and it was noted that the census records soaked in the water overnight outside the protected vault area. The schedules were dried out, re-copied. But it was impossible to restore them. So? They should still be intact, yes? In 1932 Congress authorized certain documents to be destroyed, which included the original 1890 schedules. Then, in 1934, the remaining schedules were destroyed by the Department of Commerce. Some of the mid-western census records are still available. For example, the 1890 Illinois schedules were later found, and again in 1953, when some fragmented schedules were discovered. Family History Centers have microfilmed these fragmented schedules which consist mostly of mid-western states, and then, not all counties, or enumeration districts are in tact. Jeannette H. I have been in touch with Courthouse and they say they check but from what I hear that place would be like looking for needle in haystack. They referred me to Charleston, Charleston says Welch, then Wech turned around and said Tazewell and so far 20 years later I am still searching. I know this man owned land in McDowell Co. and payed taxes on it. I don't understand why I can't find out where the land was. Census says Dix/Dick's Creek. His brother, William Collins owned & operated a gristmill on the Tug Fork and I know he lived near his brother ( family interview) They floated logs down river. William Collins was also a blacksmith, and primitive preacher. He married Mary Mullins first and Mary Ann Hatfield second. John W. married Lydia Toner first and Mary Roark second. I thank you again and pray for a breakthrough. Brenda

    2. Brenda: I've had the same problem trying to locate death certificates in McDowell County. I ended up going over the Tazewell County, since McD was part of it prior. Ofcourse, there are not many records there too. Most of them, I was told when at the courthouse, are in Richmond Va. I hope this helps you just a little. I am forwarding your message to a cousin who lives in McDowell County and is helping to compose the 2nd McDowell County history book to see if she can be of any help to you. 2. June Bond
    3. Hello All, ...And Happy Holidays!! Person looking into finding the Holland or Collins. Hope you found or have your lead. I am still searching the name "Garnet Chester Spears" (a male) He married "Annie Victoria Spears" around mid 1940's to 1947. They had three sons. Both Garnet and Annie are believed dead. Both were born in the 1920's, and both now belived to be dead. Garnet is right now the main search. He spent time either in a jail or prison in Northfork or Welsh...but not sure.We don't know the area. Would have been around 1948 or 49, maybe 1950. He was in the military, but don't know what branch or year. Oh what fun when all you have is names!! grrrr!! We have a Garnet when doing a serch for ss# but that tells us nothing since we don't have a clue who his parents were or anything about him...We have found 3 Garnets in all... The records in McDowell Co. would be the Garnet Spears I'm looking for. Well, if you have any hints...message me!! Thanks!! :) June ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
