    1. [WVMCDOWE-L] Gary Cemetery
    2. Patrick Murphy
    3. My Murphy forebears apparently were some of the first settlers up what we call Gary Holler. My great-great-grandfather Herndon Murphy, wife Polly and his family (including my ggrandfather John Anderson Murphy, Sr. and his wife Mariah nee Shannon) initially obtained grants (around 1850) for land in the main Gary area. In fact, a large tract of their land, and possibly the site of the "old homeplace," was defined by the Tug River, the Adkin Branch (holler where the old Gary High School football stadium was/is located) and Grapevine Branch (small creek running eastward off the Tug from Wilcoe). USSteel apparently owned the land for years, but I gather that is no longer the case. My question is both general and specific: Is there an authority on the history of that area and does anyone have a clue if there is an old cemetery in the area? FYI, I'm aware that John Anderson Murphy, Sr. and wife subsequently moved to present Skygusty and I'm fairly certain they are buried in a small cemetery on Totten Ridge, i.e. the ridge between Skygusty and Anawalt. This isn't the cemetery I'm trying to locate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and "Regards," from Brenham, Texas Pat

    1. [WVMCDOWE-L] Various Questions
    2. Patrick Murphy
    3. As my first "input" message to the McDowell County Group, allow me to throw in a few tidbits which, hopefully, may be of help. First, most of you are probably already aware of all of this, but when I need to look up a placename, I resort to the following U.S. Geological Survey Internet site: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html I must confess that when I checked for Hiawassee, I got 13 hits, but none in West Virginia. That being the case, I've still found it to be quite good, even with historical placenames that are no longer in use. For example, present Skygusty, which is up Gary Holler toward Anawalt used to be Dearing. Secondly, and in response to Brenda's query regarding the Collins Family, I have nothing on them, but in your research it might help to know that present-day Wilcoe (between Welch and Gary) at one time was named "Tug River." Until I discovered this, I had a heck of a time trying to figure out where "on the actual Tug River" my forebears were from. Finally, check out the following site (result of a search on the USGS site above) for information on Tiptop: http://mapping.usgs.gov:8888/gnis/owa/gnisquery?f_name=Tiptop&variant=Y&f_state= VA&f_cnty=Tazewell&f_type=&pop1=&pop2=&elev1=&elev2=&cell=&tab=y In simpler terms, Tiptop is off the beaten path in northern/northwestern Tazewell County generally south of Abbs Valley and north of Tazewell. It is definitely a wide spot in the road, reached by crossing a range of small mountains/hills on a narrow and curvy road. Even so, it's not that difficult to reach, and the area is pretty. Okay, so much for my "answers." Now that I've contributed, I feel free to ask some questions. But I'll do that separately. Regards! Patrick ("Pat") Murphy

    3. I found a Hiawatha, WV in a zip code book (zip code 24729). It looks like its located in mid to southern Mercer County or possibly is Southeastern corner of Wyoming Co. If I pin point a better location I'll be happy to pass it on. 2. WORTH WV is up "Northfork Holler" in McDowell County. There is a road that goes off R52 past Algoma and on up Northfork Holler. There are small residential places called Rolf, McDowell, Worth, and at the head of the Holler, Crumpler. We go there about every year as my mother was born in Worth and grew up in Algoma. Hope this has been of some help. Kathy

    2. My gosh, came on and found all these emails for McDowell County. Now that the list is woke up I thought I would post for any info on the Collins of Tug River. Also if anybody knows anything about a Gristmill owned and operated by William Collins on the Tug Fork of Big Sandy. My guess would be 1850-60, supposely down river from Judge Toliver. Any help appreciated. Brenda Collins Dillon
