I have been investigating a land transfer from Catherine Thornton LEMASTER and her brother John THORNTON and his wife Rachel THORNTON to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Point Pleasant in June of 1836. I received a copy of the deed from the Mason County Clerk. It lists the Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Point Pleasant as receiving the property. The trustees listed on the deed are James CAPEHART [or Capehardt], George STRIBLING [or Strebling], Joseph SLY, Robert MITCHELL and Matthew STRIBLING [or Strebling]. The Mason County Clerk in 1836 who signed the deed was Thomas LEWIS. I can send a copy of this transfer to anyone researching these men or their families in this era. I would appreciate any information about the Thornton family that you may have run across in your research. I contacted Pastor Jim Kelly at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant in the hopes that the church would have birth, death, marriage or baptismal records of the Thornton family. However, the church has membership records only back to 1848. Pastor Kelly states that in the 1830's the church meetings were held in the Old Mansion House, and that Circuit Rider served the congregation because a permanent pastor had not been assigned in 1836. If anyone has more information about the early church in Point Pleasant, I would also appreciate that information. Thanks, John White
