Dan, All of the advice you have been given is great. UMI (University Micro Films)is a great source. They are to be commended on the breath of their collection. It simply huge. Their web site is <http://www.umi.com/>. As far as I know, they only sell their holdings to universities and libraries, but you could give them a try. Many of the people in the area mixed socially with the people across the river in Ohio. So don't overlook the Gallopolis and Pomeroy newspapers. The Meigs County Library in Pomeroy has microfilms of the following newspapers: Pomeroy Banner Weekly. Aug. 8, 1867 - Dec. 18, 1868. Pomeroy Crescent Weekly. Jan. 7, 1870 - Dec. 28, 1871. Pomeroy Daily News. May 11, 1911 - Aug. 31, 1925. Pomeroy Daily Sentinel. Jan. 3, 1955 - Dec. 31, 1970. Pomeroy Daily Tribune. Pomeroy Democrat Weekly. Jan. 3, 1889 - June 19, 1919; Sep. 15, 1927 - Aug.21, 1941. Pomeroy Independent. July 3, 1908 - Dec. 21, 1910. Pomeroy Journal Weekly. Jan. 3, 1880 - Dec. 29, 1881. Pomeroy Leader Weekly. Aug. 1, 1895 - Dec. 27, 1917. Pomeroy Meigs Co. Telegraph Weekly April 17, 1851 - Jan. 30, 1894. Pomeroy Mosquito Weekly. Dec. 7, 1883 - Jan. 2, 1885. Pomeroy Sentinel. Feb. 3, 1944 - Dec. 31, 1954. Pomeroy Sentinel Weekly. Aug. 28, 1941 - July 29, 1943; Aug. 5, 1943 - Dec.28, 1944. Pomeroy Star Spangled Banner Weekly. Pomeroy Tribune Telegraph. Nov. 19, 1890 - June 3, 1943. Racine Tribune Weekly. Aug. 7, 1889 - July 31, 1889 The Pomeroy Library has a web site complete with an online card catalog. Off hand I can't remember the address, so you will have to do a search. The Gallipolis library may have similar microfilms of local newspapers. Hope this helps. Pleasant newspapers on microfilm that are not very good. In the late 1800s and early 1900s all they have is a weekly paper and many weeks are missing. Besides that, there are sections, that look like they might have been obituaries that have been cut out of many of the pages. Did Pt Pleasant have a daily paper in the late 1800s or early 1900s? Would obituaries from Mason County be found in any other newspapers? Does anyone know where microfilm of old newspapers might be purchased? I have a microfilm reader at home. It would be nice to be able to browse through some of these at my leisure. What ever that is.. Thanks Dan Grammer Marietta Ohio ______________________________
I'd contact THE POINT PLEASANT REGISTER. Their first publication was March 6, 1862 and they are still in business. http://www.cnhi.com/register/ It is now a daily newspaper and at one time, I believe it was a weekly paper. The business has changed hands, but has been continuous since 1862. Hi I used to eat at Grammer's in Cinti. Loved the place. But on to newspapers, you should try the state library, I know that for Ohio, the Historical Society sells microfilm or permits interlibrary loan. For Kentucky it is the library in Frankfort. I purchased and post to a list the Lewis and Mason County, Kentucky Newspapers. I will be soon doing a bit of Brown and Adams Co, Ohio. The 1800-1850 papers are very political, however, there are "town happenings", weddings, and deaths, "county cullins", etc. and most have marriage license applications. The 1860-1910 have much in the our neighbor sections. They are just great to read, but I like you have a reader at home. They are just essential in tracing female ancestors, who tend to get lost after marriage. Jan, Central Illinois <>< ===== Janice L. Gillespie Coordinator Ky/Lewis Co. Hi, I'm new to the list and just wondered in there is a published book on Mason Co., WV cemeteries? I'm especially interested in the Ball Chapel Cemetery as some of my distant STOUT relatives (and daughters who married WINKLERs, BENTLEYs, & BENNETs) are buried there and I need dates. Need dates for their births and marriages too. In fact, I just need everything :-D If anyone is connected to the STOUT line (German branch) please contact me. We are in the process of compiling a STOUT book from our immigrant ancestor forward and would appreciate any input y'all would care to have included in the book (including STOUT pictures). Thanks much, Neva STOUT BRYANT
Is there anyone on this list working on the WOODRUFF line? What type of recorder keeping did they have in Mason Co., in the early 1800s? I am trying to find proof that Joshua was Jonah's father. Thank you all for any help on this line. Hi folks, WHich cemetery in leon are you all talking about?. I'd like to know because if its one where I have ancestors, I'd appreciate a stone reading. Merry Anne Pierson
Hi Patti, I know there are deeds going back that far. I have copies of a couple of my great grandfather's. The County Clerks office at the Courthouse would be the best place to start. The library across the street from the courthouse also has a good genealogy section. Thanks for the invite, but I would probably go to West Virginia and do research. I am working on five web sites at this time and they are keeping me busy searching and researching. I will probably have a huge room full of files when I am done. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, July 08, 2000 5:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [WVMASON] rairden FAMILY-MASON COUNTY suzie when it gets too hot come visit me near saratoga ny...... you have a place to stay anytime...........

GREETINGS FROM THE VALLEY OF THE SUN The cemetery is on the top of the hill. It should be in great shape, it is a VERY LARGE cemetery. Where are you coming from to get there? I can give you directions, I don't think the roads have changed much since I was there last. My grandmother lived directly across from that cemetery and I used to play there. I have it spelled Rairden. Is that the same family you are looking for? I have information and one picture. I am supposed to have my gall bladder removed next week, IF the insurance doesn't mess me up. They are trying to get out of paying for it. GRRRRRRRRR If I don't I'm still gonna take the day off I think and go to the archives. I located a cemetery in Leon on the topo map at work. I hope I can find it. Leon isn't that large a place, but who knows what condition the cemetery is in. Talk to you later.
