I'm looking for information on the Hall's who moved from the Baltimore, MD area in the 1700s. The area they lived in was Kanawha county, that changed to Mason and then Jackson. I'm not sure where their records would be. I have found some mention of their name in all 3 counties plus Roane county. Peter Hall 1775-? and Polly Hall 1765-? were in Jackson county in 1850. Peters son was Solomon who moved here to Indiana about 1858. I believe Peters father was Joseph, don't have anything on his mother. Both Peter and Joseph came from Maryland, probaly the Baltimore area. Does anyone have anything further on this family ? Steve Hall

Hello, I am reasearching the surname Mckinney in Mason County. My great-great-great grandparents(NATHAN MCKINNEY AND NANCY (HICKS) MCKINNEY)Years 1863 to 1913 Also I am looking for information on Thomas Ridge and Somerville section in Mason Co. Thank You Laurie The odyssey of Grandma Mckinney had it`s beginning when Nancy Hicks Mckinney and Nathan migrated to Old Virginia fom Kentucky in 1863. Nathan Mckinney joined the US calvary and Grandma and their 5 children began thier long trek on foot over the mountain and down the Kanawha River. Her long weary trip ended in that part of Mason Co. Known as Somerville section. Later the family moved toThomas Ridge where the work of Grandma was to become history.Family members recall how in her earlier years, this hard working, deeply reverant woman gathered Ginseng and other herbs and sold them to make a living. Her Knowledge of medicinal herbs undoubtedly served her well into her later years as she ministered to the sick.Grandma, friends and neighbors remembered, never found the distance to far or the weather too bad to answer a call for help. Nor would she permit such to interfere with the worship of her Lord. Those who knew her well state that it was not an unusual experience to hear her ! praying aloud as she knelt by the roadside. When she wanted to pray, she did not permit time or place to interupt. Her faithful service often found her out at night. She would carry a flaming torch to light her way.Her Tireless ministrations to the sick as well as the hungry won for her the deep affections of hundreds of country folk. The establishment of the memorial was a natural outgrowth of the great esteem and love in which she was held. The Memorial began when gradma died in 1913 at the age of 82. Nancy Hicks Mckinney was listed as head of household and lived alone at age 78, in 1910 West Virginia Census Mason Co. Cooper township.Taken April 15, 1910.

My husband and I were in Mason County last month. Birth and Death records start at 1853. Good luck on your search. Bev. I know you have gotten other answers about this. The courthouse did not have a fire, the old one was torn down and a new one built. The records are pretty much in tact. The library directly across Viand Street does have a genealogy department. They're not complete, of course, but well organized. The marriage & death records are very well kept. Tax & land records I haven't checked yet. Except for one woman (who may have been having a bad day), everyone was very pleasant. Melinda
Thanks Julie Bev

They have a copy of my book in the Clerk's office at the courthouse, and Dot Campbell is the one who helps genealogists, there. Julie

What names are you seeking? How far > back do the records at the courhouse.? Such as birth and death and tax > lists. The land records go back to 1804--the founding of the county. I can't recall the earliest date on births and deaths, but I have a certification from the Clerk's office on my husband's grandmother's birth, 22 Sep 1874; the earliest marriage is in 1806. The earliest tax records are very fragile, and not available for the general public to handle them. Does Pt. Pleasant Library have a genealogy dept? Yes--a small room with a modest collection of family histories in a hanging file; lots of books--a great help is the group of five books of Mason County Cemetery Inscriptions, by Violette Machir. > Bev

Anyone have any information on John S. Burke/Burks. Born about 1824 in Pennsylvania and came to Mason County about 1866. Married Matilda Jane McGee. Thanks! Debbie

Hi John, Arthur Edwards is my ggggggrandfather thru his daughter Rebecca Edwards. I have seen conflicting data on who his parents are. The Edwards family who have the claim on New York Island say his father is John Edwards b. May 1727. And I've seen reports who say his father is Benjamin. Does the history of Mason County have any proof of parentage? Is the book "The History of Mason Co. " available thru an inter-library loan? Thanks Debbie
Debbie, I don't know where barnett Cemetery is, but I noticed that you are researching Arthur Edwards. Is that the one who married Jane Withrow? What other information do you have about him? Deb
