Does anyone know if the Pt. Plesant Register of Mason Co WV accepts community service articles? I would like to send a article on the setting of a civil war tombstone down there in Mason County. If possible does anyone know if they have a email address? I do not have access to a fax. Or could you let me know their phone number. I could call them direct. Thank you. Regina Gray

Hello, Can anyone tell me what information is likely to be included in a Marriage Record filed in Mason County, West Virginia for the year 1869. Since records vary in content from state to state and I am looking for information pertaining to the individual's place of birth and names of their parents ..is it likely that the marriage record would supply that data for me? Also since the state of West Virginia requires a SASE when records are requested how do you determine how much postage to send along when multiple copies are ordered? Thank you for your help with this matter. Bette in Wisconsin [email protected]

As most of you are aware, genealogy is an expensive hobby. Lots of people send us offers for computer programs and websites and databases and cd's and books and all sorts of things. I am one of the furtunate in that I can afford to pay for a few things that make my life easier regarding research. One of those things is Julie's book. I have a lot of roots in Mason County and am constantly referring to her work at my convienience. It also came to me autographed and with a personal note of thanks for ordering it while on my honeymoon LOL BUT Not so very long ago, I lived in Ravenswood which is about half an our north of Point Pleasant. I was disabled with a back injury and out of work so I had NO money. I couldnt afford the gas to get to Pt Pleasant, and even if I could the pain of the trip would have prohibited it. My ONLY resource and comfort during that time was my computer. I depended ENTIRELY on the free resources and help I found there--these mailing lists included. I propose we thank those who help us for free and support those whose work has a reasonable cost when possible. Personally I am forever indebted to the Latter Day Saints for FREE gen software and for FREE access to thier records online. I am thankfull for all of you who have sites with your family information posted and to each of you who respond on the lists with answers to queries. I post what I can as well as being the Rootsweb List Administrator for two lists by way of giving back to the comunity. I also teach a genealogy class at the local high school. When I have a book--through purchase or library loan--I do lookups. That is what genealogists do, Sharing and family is what drives us. Julie didn't make money from her book--she did the work out of the kindness of her heart and charged enough to cover her costs (and in some instances Im betting not enough). Be fair with yourselves and do what's right. If you can afford to purchase gen matierial and will use it, then buy it. If you truly can't, then use what is available and don't forget to say "Thank You" to the person who helped you. Ouch! Kathy, When I complimented Dale on sharing his research through his web site, there was absolutely no intention of diminishing the fine work of Julie Chapin Hesson, whose book I eagerly bought a few years ago. It remains a treasured resource for my Mason Co. ancestors. There is plenty of room for multiple resources that cover various aspects of the same "ground." Your friend and distant cousin through our Eads-Wallace connection, Mary Cervantes Cincinnati Researching Christy, Bush, Hughs/Hughes, Eads, Doss in Mason County Kathy wrote: > I just wanted to let everyone know that although Dale is trying to be helpful in posting the marriages for Mason County, WV there is only one complete "accurate" work covering all the marriages up to 1915. Julie spent many hours, days, and months checking the record books which was not an easy job. If anyone should be given praise and thanks for their time and effort it should be Julie. She undertook a most difficult task and did an exemplary job in producing the most accurate information possible. Further she has made it available for a reasonable cost. It has been reprinted twice and each time it sells out. Lastly, she has very generously allowed the book to be used as a source for free marriage lookups for the West Virginia Gen Web page and often answers queries from the WV ! > Mason Co mailing list herself. I usually try to stay out of these types of "discussions". But, I am on a number of lists and have seen people on a select few get publicly chastised because of something they thought would help there fellow researchers. Regardless if someone else thinks that another work is more "accurate" or more "complete" than others, then why not just state that there is another source available, rather than saying someone elses work is "inaccurate". People will not have to choose sides and we all can benefit from other sources of information. I have received help from Julie and I am thankful for that help and I have also looked at Dale's site and I have looked at other sites for WV marriages. Thanks to all who have helped me with my brick walls. If Genealogists can't get along, then the world is truly doomed. To All on the List: I certainly did not mean to upset, offend, insult, or do anything else that could evenly remotely be considered offensive. If I have offended anyone, then please accept my apologies. As I have researched my family history for almost 20 years, many people have shared information freely with me. I also have shared information whenever I could help anyone. With the growth of the internet and web resources to help all geneaologists, I have found a great deal of information via the web. My only purpose in posting my message was to share information with others. Compiling the marriages of Mason County has been something I have been interested in for a number of years. I have had the microfilm of the marriage books and indexes at the local LDS library for about 9 years. This summer, I have had time to finally work on a project that I have wanted to for a long time. I will continue to do so as time permits. I will also continue to post the data on my web page. Please note that I am using microfilm copies of the original marriage books, from Mason County. I am going page by page through the marriage records, not just the index book. This information appears to be just as accurate as if you are looking at the real book in the County Clerk's office in Point Pleasant. To avoid any future offense to anyone, I will not post any messages that I have updated my web page. If you have a question of me concerning my web page or Mason Co marriage records, please contact me directly via e-mail. [email protected] Best Wishes to ALL, Dale

Dale and Listers- Thanks for SUCH a valuable resource!!! Your hard work is much appreciated! Be aware however that the index (basically anything in tables) is NOT viewable in Netscape 4.77. Your best bet is to use Internet Explorer. This is a pretty typical problem with things converted with Front Page as Microsoft tends to write programs specifically to exclude software that isn't thiers. Some html commands don't work in both browsers--or AOL for that matter. SO use dale's page with IE =) Robin in Toronto, Canada -- _______________________________________________ Make PC-to-Phone calls with Net2Phone. Blank Julie MomCat, I would love to purchase a copy of your book. It sounds like you did an unbelievable amount of work on it! Please e-mail me at [email protected] and let me know where to send my check. And many thanks!! Pat N.
Blank I am researching the Hayes/Hayse, Mitchell, Lee, and Duncan families from Mason/Putnam Cos. They seemed to cross into one or the other of the counties over the years. Lawson M. Hayse(Hayes) m. Mary Jane Duncan 4-11-1858. Children: Henry F. Hayes, Lewis Milton (Mitt) Hayes, William A., Anna, Malinda, plus more Mary Jane's parents were Charles and Lucinda (Lucy) Duncan. Charles born in KY. Robert A. Mitchell m. Laura Holcomb 10-4-1864. (When Robert A. Mitchell died in 1884, Laura married 2nd - John Stone, in 1894. In 1900 census, she goes by Anna Laura Stone.) Children of Robert A. and Laura: Rose (aka Ella) m. Henry F. Hayes. Had 11 children. Emma m. Lewis Milton (Mitt) Hayes. Had son, Chancy, plus more. Anselm(Anslem) Robert (Bob) Mitchell m. Millie Bertha Knapp 6-15-1889. Felix M. Lee m. Rebecca J. Stephenson in 1840 (exact date unknown). Children: Ellen O. Lee (m. William Rice), George Sutser Lee (was Union soldier), Andrew Pierce Lee, Charles William Lee (m. Frances Jane Davis), plus more. Charles William Lee at one time owned store in Pt. Pleasant, sold sewing machines. Became farmer, and around 1896 moved to Kanawha Co. and bought farm and ferry at Sattes, WV. Is anybody else out there doing research on any of these families? Thanks. Pat N.
