    1. Genealogy society
    2. Cynthia Cocker
    3. Does anyone know if Mason County has a genealogy society that is active? I found an address back in January and wrote a letter, but I never got a reply. My letter never came back, either. I was really hoping to get some help with my Perry line from someone. Cynthia

    1. John Perry and Sarah Landers 1870 and 1880
    2. Cynthia Cocker
    3. I'm searching for information on the parents of my third great grandfather, John Perry who married Sarah Landers in Botetourt County, Virginia on 7 February 1850. They moved to Mason County before 1870. They were living in Robinson Township in 1870 and Clendenin Township in 1880. John and Sarah had the following children: George T. born 1852 in Botetourt Elizabeth D. born 1853 in Botetourt William Alfred born 1 Sep 1854 in Botetourt Margaret J. born 20 Aug 1856 in Botetourt Charles Edward born 15 Sep 1858 in Botetourt Jennie born 1861 Henry T. born July 1862 Alice born 1866 James born 1868 Blanche born 1870 Jesse born 7 Apr 1874 John born 1877 You would think that where the children are, you'll find the parents. I thought I was hot on John's trail in Botetourt until I discovered that there were TWO John Perry's who were there in 1850. Putting two and two together, I realized that the evidence pointed toward the other John as belonging to that Perry line, so I'm back to square one. It's frustrating! Does anyone have any information? I would be grateful for any little shred, at this point. Thanks! Cynthia Cocker

His pension application indicates that he was born in Covington, KY. Since he enlisted at Covington, KY it could well be that the answer on the pension application is in error. John Valentine Morgan served in the Civil War with the Union Forces in Company I 55th Regiment of the Kentucky Mounted Infantry he enrolled as a Private on the 23rd day of February 1865. His combined service record shows that he had previously served in Company H, 10th Regiment of the Kentucky Cavalry and was discharged on April 20, 1863. He served in the Kentucky Mounted Infantry Volunteers under Capt. Alexander W. (Lauwill) and was honorably discharged on the 19th of September 1865 at Louisville, KY. He was 5'10'' with Brown Hair and Blue eyes. He was treated in the Hospital in Lexington, Ky June 7th and 8th, 1865 and was listed as malingering and deserted on June 8, 1865. He was reported as a deserter to the Pro. Mar. on June 10th at Lexington, KY. He states in one part of his application that he resided in Mason Cnty, Ky. from the time of his discharge to July 1877 and since in Adams Cnty, Ohio. In another part of his file he states that he resided from 1871-76 in Lewis Cnty, KY. He states that his occupation is that of a farmer. His address on the 26th of June 1897 is Blue Creek, Adams Cnty., Ohio and that he lives on Johnson's Run. On January 31, 1898 he indicated that he is married to Louisa Sartain that they were married on September 18th 1864 in Aberdeen, Brown, Ohio and that the record of marriage is recorded at Georgetown, Brown Cnty, Ohio. He further lists his children and their birthdates. On March 20, 1915 he answers Pension questions indicating that he enlisted at Maysville, KY and that Thomas Shelton at Aberdeen, Ohio married him and Louisa Sartain. His wife and he are living together and he again lists children and dates of birth He answers pension question that his parents were John and Mary Morgan and that he was an only child. In various answers to census and pension documents he lists his parents birthplaces as VA, KY and OH. In the 1860 census John V. Morgan is found living with Mary A. Morgan a woman of the age of 65 who is likely his grandmother. He is 14 in this census and was born in VA. Mary A. Morgan was born in VA. Also with the family is John C. Morgan, born VA, and his wife Francis, that are of the age that they could be John V. Morgan's cousins or uncle. In 1850 another males by the name of Nathan, born VA, and David P. born VA, is also living along with Mary A. Morgan and others. These men along with John V. Morgan served in the same KY cavalry unit in the Civil War futher giving credibility to the fact that they are related. In Civil War pension materials David P. Morgan states that he is the brother of John C. Morgan. This clearly links the two of them and likely to Nathan since they all lived together with Mary A. Morgan in 1850 but leaves the exact link to John V. open. Notes: 1. Nathan Morgan's Widows pension file contains a marriage license copy wherein it is stated that the marriage took place in Boyd Cnty, KY at the home of Jacob Morgan and was witnessed by Jacob Morgan, Andrew Morgan and Jane Mann. 2. Nathan Morgan's Widows pension file contains an affidavit of 3/10/1891 that is signed by Jacob Morgan that states that he lived within a mile of Nathan and Rachel (first wife) when she died and that this is the same Nathan that served in the Civil War and married Jane Cooley. This Jacob Morgan is aged 68 and resides in Ironton, Lawrence Cnty, OH at this date. 3. Jacob Morgan is the son of Mary Morgan the women that ties all these people together for nearly 40 years. Jacob has proven siblings of Lovina and Elizabeth if Mary is the mother of Nathan, John C. and David P. then we have 5 children with others likely. Needed Information 1. Proof of the parents of John Valentine Morgan 2. Proof of the birth and death dates and places for John Valentine Morgan's parents 3. Proof of the place of birth of John Valentine Morgan 4. Place, date and proof of birth ( Abt 1795 in VA) and death of Mary A. Morgan 5. Information on the younger Mary Morgan in the family 6. Information on Virginia Morgan 7. 3. I have been searching for 30 years for a clue to this family. Please look at these names and what I know of them and please let me know if you have any information. Mary A. MORGAN- b abt 1795-98 in WV d. after 1880. John Valentine MORGAN is living with Mary A. Morgan in 1860 in Mason Cnty, KY. Mary A. MORGAN has living with her a number of people all apparently related but we are not certain of how. We know that Jacob, Lovina and Elizabeth are her children as shown in the following details. John C. and David P. MORGAN are brothers as determined by CW papers. Nathan, Cassey/Cassandroe/Cassa, Mary E., Virginia and John Valentine are as yet unknown. David P. MORGAN-Living with Mary A. MORGAN in 1850 and 1860 in Mason Cnty, KY. Went to CW with John Valentine MORGAN and served in the same unit. Lived and died in Boyd Cnty, KY after 1870 and in Carter Cnty, KY in 1890. Buried with wife Martha WELLS MORGAN in Ashland Cemetery. John C. MORGAN-Living with Mary A. Morgan in 1850 Mason Cnty, KY census and then with Mary A. Morgan and his wife Francis BENNET in the 1860 census of Mason Cnty, KY. Lived in Greenup Cnty, KY and died in Ironton, Lawrence Cnty, OH. Went to CW with John Valentine Morgan and served in the same unit. . John C. MORGAN's pension application is signed by Jacob MORGAN and James T. LONG August 28, 1890. David P. MORGAN gives an affidavit and states that he is John C. MORGAN's brother. Nathan MORGAN lived with Mary A. Morgan in 1850 was married and living in Mason Cnty, KY in 1860 with his wife Rachel MILLER MORGAN and children. Later lived in Boyd Cnty, KY and after his first wife's death married Jane COOLEY of that Cnty. Left Boyd Cnty, KY and went to MN and then lived and died in WI. Served in CW at the same time as John V. MORGAN in another unit. Jane COOLEY- Second wife of Nathan. Married in Boyd Cnty at the home of Jacob MORGAN. Jacob MORGAN signs the affidavit that she is the second wife of Nathan and that he saw his first wife, Rachel MILLER buried. Jacob MORGAN-Nathan and Jane COOLEY were married in Jacob's home. In the 1880 Gallia Cnty, OH census Mary A. MORGAN is living with Jacob and his wife Sidney and son Harmon and she is shown as his mother. Jacob served in the CW in a WV unit and mustered out at Ceredo, WV. Andrew MORGAN- Andrew is a witness at Nathan's marriage to Jane at Jacob MORGAN's home in Boyd Cnty, KY. Jane MANN- Jane is a witness at Nathan MORGAN's marriage in Jacob's home. John Valentine MORGAN's daughter states in a letter that John had a sister Jane Jemima. This may be the Jane? Lovina MORGAN- lived with Mary A. Morgan in Mason Cnty, KY per the 1850 and 1860 Census. In 1880 she is living with Jacob MORGAN above in Gallia Cnty, OH and she is Jacob's sister. Elizabeth MORGAN- married Thomas Casebolt in Mason Cnty, Ky. Elizabeth died and Thomas left the Casebolt children to live with Mary A. MORGAN in Mason Cnty, KY in 1860. Mary E. CASEBOLT- one of the CASEBOLT children left to live with Mary A. MORGAN married in 1870 James T. LONG in Gallipolis, Gallia Cnty, OH. James Thomas LONG- found with Mary E. in Cario, IL in 1880 and later in 1900 in Ironton, OH with Jacob MORGAN an uncle living with them. This is Mary E. Casebolt's uncle her mother's brother so therefore Elizabeth MORGAN is a sister to Jacob MORGAN. Cassie MORGAN- A Casey MORGAN is living with Mary A. MORGAN in Mason Cnty, KY and in the 1860 Census is listed as Cassandre MORGAN. A Cassie MORGAN marries a Francis M. LONG in Gallia Cnty, OH in the same month as Mary E. CASEBOLT marries James T. LONG and their marriage certificates are together as they were married by JP Martindale 3 weeks apart. Odds are this is Casey/Cassandre/Cassie MORGAN the same person. I find a Cassa Long living with Francis M Long in Gallia Cnty, OH in the 1880 Census. John MORGAN- signed the pension application of David P. MORGAN May 7, 1883 in Ironton, OH John W. Morgan- signed the pension application of Jacob MORGAN August 28, 1890 in Ironton, OH with James T. LONG. Possibly John MORGAN and John W. MORGAN are one and the same. Thank you, John Morgan

    3. Hi: I have looked for years for a link to tie my MORGAN family together. I found a part of it recently: Mary MORGAN found in Mason Cnty, KY in 1850 and 1860 now found in Gallia Cnty, OH in 1880 still missing in 1870. In 1880 she is living with her son Jacob Morgan and daughter Lavina Morgan. Now we have it Mary is Jacob's mother BUT WHO IS MARY'S HUSBAND AND JACOB'S FATHER? Andrew MORGAN is at Jacob MORGAN's home in Boyd Cnty, KY to witness the marriage of Nathan MORGAN. I find on the web a death notice for Andrew MORGAN in Ironton, OH. IS THIS THE ANDREW MORGAN I AM SEEKING? Cassie MORGAN is living with Mary MORGAN in Mason Cnty, KY in 1850 and 1860. A Cassy MORGAN married a Thomas LONG in Gallia Cnty, OH in 1870. Is this Cassy the Cassie MORGAN a daughter of Mary MORGAN? This family migrated right along the river between Gallipolis, OH and Cario, IL and is found in many of the KY, OH and WV counties along the river. If you have MORGAN/LONG/SARTAIN/CASEBOLT/WELLS/BENNET/WILLIAMS ties we need to talk. Derald Morgan

Mason County, WV Hello, Can anyone help with the date and place of death for my great-grandfather Charles Henry Baker born 1868 in KY to Elizabeth and William Henry Baker (according to the 1880 Census for Mason County. ) I believe he may have died in Mason or Kanawha County, WV but I do not know when or where. He was married to Mariah E. Cossin in 1889 in Gallia County, Ohio (according to "Marriage Records, 1851-1900 Gallia County, Ohio" compiled by Michael I. Trowbridge). I am looking for the correct date and place of death in order to request these records from the appropriate source. Thank you for your interest and efforts on my behalf. 1. Rowley/Stanley Ties
    2. Am searching for information on the ancestry of my Rowley & Stanley lines. James West Rowley & Sarah Stanley were married 1 December 1833 in Jackson County, VA/WV. Anna Rowley, d/o James West Rowley & Sarah Stanley, married James Barnhart on 4 April 1850. James Barnhart & Anna Rowley were my ggg grandparents. From the 1850 Jackson County, VA Census comes information on the following households: Sarah ROWLEY 49 born Mason County, VA William 19 born Jackson County, VA Calvin 12 born Jackson County, VA James BARNHEART 20 Anna 15 So Anna Rowley's age of 15, between brothers William & Calvin, places her birth as circa 1835 in Jackson County, VA. I also have a connection to Sarah Rowley through my Huffman line. In Jackson County Deed Book 11, pages 111-112, is a document where Sarah Rowley makes her son-in-law John Stuart Huffman ( my ggg grandfather) her power-of attorney. Sarah Rowley, according to the document, had been living with John Stuart Huffman & Ruth Stanley Ables Huffman ( my ggg grandmother) since 11 May 1855. Ruth Stanley was born, according to Census records circa 1821. Therefore, we know that Ruth was the d/o Sarah Stanley & that she was born out-of-wedlock to Sarah Stanley prior to her Jackson County nuptial with James West Rowley on 1 December 1833. We also know that Ruth Stanley & Anna Rowley were half sisters. I have read a descendants chart posted online that claims that James West Rowley was the s/o William Henry Rowley & Elizabeth Van Ziles. I have presently been unable to confirm this. Please forgive me if I rambled on. Thank you in advance for any information or guidance. I look forward to hearing from you & learning more about the families Rowley & Stanley. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]
