    2. Does anyone have the transcription or list of burials for Lone Oak Cemetery. I realize there are two. One is online and the other isn't. I'm looking for the one not online and think is the one just southwest of Lock 11 Mason Co. Any help appreciated. 1. [WVMASON] 1836, Capehart, Stribling, Sly, and Mitchell Church Trustees

    3. I have been investigating a land transfer from Catherine Thornton LEMASTER and her brother John THORNTON and his wife Rachel THORNTON to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Point Pleasant in June of 1836. I received a copy of the deed from the Mason County Clerk. It lists the Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Point Pleasant as receiving the property. The trustees listed on the deed are James CAPEHART [or Capehardt], George STRIBLING [or Strebling], Joseph SLY, Robert MITCHELL and Matthew STRIBLING [or Strebling]. The Mason County Clerk in 1836 who signed the deed was Thomas LEWIS. I can send a copy of this transfer to anyone researching these men or their families in this era. I would appreciate any information about the Thornton family that you may have run across in your research. I contacted Pastor Jim Kelly at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant in the hopes that the church would have birth, death, marriage or baptismal records of the Thornton family. However, the church has membership records only back to 1848. Pastor Kelly states that in the 1830's the church meetings were held in the Old Mansion House, and that Circuit Rider served the congregation because a permanent pastor had not been assigned in 1836. If anyone has more information about the early church in Point Pleasant, I would also appreciate that information. Thanks, John White

    1. [WVMASON] George Thornton, died 1807 Point Pleasant and Givens and Lewis Families
    2. JOHN WHITE
    3. Recent notes on George Thornton, b. btw 1747-1752, Virginia, d. 7 APR 1807 Point Pleasant It is understandable that the author of “1658-1758 Charles County MD Families – The first 100 years” is unclear about the parentage of* George Thornton*. He states “ [he] may be a grandson to *Francis Thornton.” * One item that may be noteworthy is that *Francis Thornton and Francis Thornton II* were both founding members of the Loyal Land Company. In 1748 this company was granted 800,000 acres west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The leader of the company was* John Lewis*. Their charter expired in 1757, but after the Declaration of Independence, the Virginia House of Delegates recognized the sales already made by the Loyal Land Company. In addition, *General Andrew Lewis*, son of *John Lewis* above was the head of the Greenbrier Land Company active in Greenbrier County, Virginia. *General Andrew Lewis* (above), born in 1720, married in 1747 *Elizabeth Givens* of Augusta County. The John Givens family came to America from Ireland in 1735 along with the John Lewis family. In 1772 the first mention of *George Thornton* in Greenbrier County was in the Day Book of Mathews Trading Post where he was listed as an agent of *James Givens (Givins)*. *James and Samuel Givens* were sons of *John Givens* and brothers to *Elizabeth Givens Lewis*. *Thomas Lewis*, son of *Andrew and Elizabeth Givens Lewis*, lived with and had children by *Sally (Sallie) Thornton*, one of *George Thornton*’s daughters. In 1807 *George Thornton* appointed “his friend” *Andrew Lewis* as one of the executors of his will. Clearly these families knew of one another and often lived side-by-side. However, I am still unable to piece together how* or if* George Thornton is part of the Francis Thornton family. If anyone has another piece of this puzzle that they can contribute, that would be great. I am also open to correction or questioning of any of my assumptions. Thanks, John White John White

    3. Ken, I received some information from a family member yesterday. Apparently George had a brother named Lindsey. He also was at one time in the employ of a Mr. James Givins in 1772. I don't know if you have run across either of these names in your investigations. Here is the information I received yesterday. The Journal of the Greenbrier Historical Society Vol 1 Num 1 August 1963 Pg 8-14 Mathews Trading Post Day books, which were kept an accounting of the charges for purchases made and credits for produce sold to the store. They cover the time interval 8 April 1771 to 26 Jan 1773. The first trading post, or store within the confines of the present limits of Greenbrier, for which there is any known record, was owned by Sampson and George Mathews and is said to have been located on the Greenbrier River, not far from the mouth of Howards Creek, at or near the shallows in the river now known as Mathews Ford. Thornton, George - Oct '72 - Agent for James Givins ======================== The Journal of the Greenbrier Historical Society Vol IV Num 4 1984 The Mathews Trading Post Ledger 1771-1779 Dr. Harry Handley, founder of the Greenbrier Historical Society, in its 1963 Journal, published names of customers at the Mathews Trading Post from 8 April 1771 to 26 January 1773. Dr. Handley's list was derived, he said, from two "Day Books" which were thought at that time to be the only record of the store in existence. however, last year, the Greenbrier Historical Society had the great good fortune to receive from Mr. Denny Wood, the Mathews Trading Post's Ledger for the years 1771-1779 and an additional "Day Book". Pg 56 Thornton, George (brother to Lindsey) p. 89 1773 March linsey; May 1 hat, sundries, 10 yds ozgns, knife; Augt pins; Sept Rasp 1774 Janr Rum 1776 Decr To enter on your acct. ======================= I don't know where this leads us, but I thought it was interesting. I thought that I might be able to track the Thorntons through the LeMaster or Lewis connection. It includes a picture of John Lewis. I assume this was the John who was born in 1860. It looks like your ancestors were very important people in Point Pleasant. Apparently John was the postmaster in Point Pleasant when this book was printed in 1913. I'm not sure about any of the genealogy that is listed. There was a different level of documentation in 1913 than we use today. You probably have this information, but I thought I would send it anyway. If you every find anything about the Thorntons, please remember me. 3. Ken, I have seen Mary Alexander linked as a wife to George online, but I have never been able to prove this. There was a Mary Alexander who married a George Thornton (1752-1807) in Virginia at approximately the same time in history. However, they were wealthy land owners. Our George Thornton was often in court for debts - and too much alcohol. You are correct that Sally Thornton and Thomas Lewis were never formally married. My family lists them as common law marriage. This is probably because of the long relationship proven by the children. In ALL WEST VIRGINIA HISTORY, VOL 3 it states that both Thomas and Sally were dead by the time the deed to their heirs was recorded in Kanawha County on July 27,1820. That is almost 20 years after the marriage license was issued dated 4 NOV 1800. That does not mean that Sally or (Sallie) did not remarry. However, the book does not mention this. I have ordered a copy of the will of George Thornton probated 1807 from the Mason County Clerk. I don't expect to find out much from this document, but I'll let you know if anything turns up. 1. [WVMASON] Sheldon Gibbs
    2. Viki Clark
    3. I am looking for information on Sheldon Gibbs (b: 1894), son of Luman Gibbs (1765-1841). I am especially interested in the full name of his wife who he married, I'm guessing, somewhere between 1814-1818. Her first name shows as Sarah on all the census information, and Sally in the Luman Gibbs Will. I've seen her last name on other trees as Dashner but I have been unable to find a documented source. I would also be interested in Samuel's full birthdate. He and Sarah also had three children born in Mason County. One daughter was born before 1819, name unknown and who must have died between 1820-1830 because she doesn't show up in the 1830 census. Eunice Caroline Gibbs was born in 1819. A son, William Harrison Gibbs, was born in 1824. Any information you can share would be extremely appreciated!

    1. [WVMASON] 1906 obit Elijah Barringer
    2. Ernie Wright
    3. Huntington Herald Advertiser 26 Apr 1906 PILOT ON THE FIRST TOWBOAT ON OHIO RIVER Captain Elijah Barringer was one of the pilots on the first Condor died last week at his home in Middleport , and who will be buried Saturday, was the perhaps the oldest living riverman at the time of his death. Captain Barringer is the father of Asa Barringer a well known coach maker at the C & O shops and a prominent East End Citizen. Captain Barringer had served fifty-four years on the river, part of which he was a pilot on a flatboat before anyone conceived of the idea of towing boats both ways. Flatboats were used in those days to take produce down the river , mostly timber and farm products which were loaded on the boats and taken to other points down river to be sold, many of the boats taken to New Orleans. He and his brother were pilots on the first towboat on the Ohio River The Condor which was built before there was any thought of making a business of towing coal up and down the river. The boat was a side wheeler and a very cumbroms affair indeed which was ran by a single engine attached to a shaft which ran through the center of the boat and a wheel crank in the center which necessatated all the steering being done by the wise manipulation of the rudders. There were several Condors after the first was built and possibly some people might think they remember the first one but later on the others were built up to the Condor No.3 Captain Barringer was born in 1815 and had watched the development of the steamboat business on the Ohio in what might be termed it infancy and has watched the growth of the river traffic in the passenger line from the first effort to its zenith and then until the present day when it is claimed to be waning. The Condor was a good boat for her time, though there weren't a boat of her same construction and machinery on the river at the present time, she would be very slow compared with the heavy powered towboats which now tow twenty- five barges of coal with ease. Could she be seen now on the river her clumsy movements and chug-chug of her ponderous slow revolving engine , would cause wonder and merriment. The passing of these old rivermen marks an epoch in the history of the Ohio River latter day memories of which cannot exceed the early history of the great waterways in cherished recollections
