Dear List-- I know that if anyone can clear up a mystery, the wonderful people on this list can. The other day I ran across a reference to "The Elmer Evans Post" on Bowman's Ridge in reference to the Civil War. I am hoping that someone will tell me about this "Post" as it is VERY IMPORTANT to me. The Story: My wife's grandfather (my son's great grandfather), he was "ALFRED CLARENCE ELMER EVANS", always told his family that from the time he was just a little boy (born in 1891) he was told that he was named after THREE of his Uncles that were killed in the Civil War---Alfred EVANS----Clarence EVANS----and Elmer EVANS. I have looked everywhere for any of these three men in connection to the Civil War and had not found anything---until pops up the ELMER EVANS POST of the GAR on Bowman's Ridge. Blew my mind!!!! I know that the father of Alfred Clarence Elmer EVANS was Enoch Jackson EVANS who was the son of Samuel EVANS--died in Marshall County about 1855--and his widow Nancy remarried John McDONALD (though the marriage record says McCONNELL but further census records all show McDONALD). Enoch Jackson EVANS died in February 1912 at the Sherrard Post Office when he fell off his horse. Pneumonia had killed him. Can someone please tell me about the Elmer EVANS Post or if you know anything about the other "brothers" please let me know. None of these boys are listed as Samuel's sons.
