    1. Actia BURCH
    2. To the List: In digging today for other information I came across an e-mail I received from Jean Logston <[email protected]> dated August 21, 1997. It said, and I quote: (hope Jean doesn't mind but if it can help us clear up problems, I think she would be happy): "To Carlisle Bowling "I'm trying to find proof that Actia BURCH was a daughter of Jessie BURCH. So far I know that Richard T., Jessie Jr., Zephariah, and Eliza are the children of Jessie. It is highly probable that Actia also belongs to the family, but positive proof has eluded me. "But Jessie Jr. named one of his daughters Actia. Richard T., when he was 80, wrote a letter to the war department to testify that he was at Actia's wedding when he was 14 years old. Actia was trying to get a widow's pension of George WOODS in the war of 1812. "Actia had eloped in 1814 to Greene County Pennsylvania to marry George WOODS. Actia named the first three of eleven children, Richard, Jessie B., and Eliza. She was the right age to be a daughter of Jessie BURCH, being born April 14, 1797 and of course, her maiden name was BURCH. But, those are all indicators, not the proof I need. How can you help me? "I am aware that Zephariah married Ruth McHENRY, Richard married Isabella McHENRY, and Robert McHENRY married Eliza BURCH. There were several marriages of BURCHES into the MAYHALL Family as well, I think into Richard's line. "Actia and George WOODS moved to Lisbon, Iowa around 1852, but quite a few of their children stayed in Marshall County. Only three, Lewis, Caroline, and Mary went with them to Iowa. "I'm glad to talk to someone interested in the BURCH family. Actia was my great-great grandmother. Clarence BURCH, Jessie jr.'s son, who had a store on Lafayette Avenue in Moundsville, West Virginia in the early 1900's was my Grandfather John LEACH's cousin. "I don't know who Actia's mother was either. Thanks for any help you can give. Jean Logston" Interestingly enough, I have a hand written note on the side of this hard-copy e-mail which says: "Buchannon Hill Cemetery--Actia BURCH died June 5, 1854 at age 4 years, 10 months 16 days., daughter of J. & Z. also there were: Samuel BURCH, died Jan. 8, 1854--3 yrs 0months 19 days and also David BURCH but the dates were not readable by the reader of the cemetery. Thought this was interesting and maybe someone can shed some additional light on this. Carlisle Bowling e-mail [email protected]
