Hi Vernon and all, WOW! Almost fell off my chair when I read your post! Thanks Vernon! I've spent alot of time researching this summer (and beyond) on exactly what you posted. I'm a direct descendant of both Michael CRESAP Sr. and Jr. I'm posting this to the list also, in case there's any interest. Please see some questions below. > I have an article on the Cresap >family somewhere. I could dig it up if anyone is interested. Would love any articles you might have on this Cresap family or anything regarding this movement of graves. There is >also a Cresap family book in the Moundsville Library I'm sure this book is the History of the Cresaps, which I have a copy of. >His son, Michael Cresap, was born 7 OCT 1775, Oldtown, MD, just 11 days >before the death of his father. This Michael Cresap lived in Marshall >County, at Cresap's Bottom, where Mitchell Power Plant now stands. I thought it was the Appalachian Power Company? Are they connected somehow, or am I wrong? I tried getting a copy of the court papers where the power company was given permission to move the graves....Marshall Co. cannot find any records of it. Do you know anymore about the court's permission or (gasp!) a court case number? > >In 1967, during the construction of Mitchell Plant, Grisell's Funeral Home >was contracted to move those buried in the Cresap Cemetery. Pictures were >taken of this process. Michael & Hannah Cresap were buried in metal/lead >caskets, which were mummy shaped. These caskets also had viewing windows >and were in perfect condition. Everyone who was buried in this cemetery >was moved to, I believe, Graysville Methodist Church Cemetery. New >tombstones were placed on some of the graves, I am not sure who had this >done. > This info is outstanding to me! I now know which funeral home handled it, and I can contact them for more info (if they're still around?). This summer we were doing other CRESAP and HENRETTA research at MT. ROSE Cemetery, and spoke with one of the cemetery workers who remembered helping move the Cresap graves back in the 60's. He's the only reason we ever found Graysville Cemetery. Being the addicted genealogist, I then dragged my fiance thru the back roads and was estatic to see the Cresap headstones. I think Michael's family had the original stones? Can you tell me more? I haven't yet tried contacting the church yet, but plan to do so. Would the funeral home have these pictures? I'd give anything for a picture of CRESAP CEMETERY before it's destruction. >I became involved in making sure all those buried in this cemetery were >moved, in the summer of 1997, during some new construction. As far as >anyone could determine everyone was moved. I'm confused. Is this supposed to be 1967 not 1997? Or was there even more construction in 1997? Was this at Graysville or at the power plant? I'd love to hear anything and everything you can tell about all this. Please contact me direct so as not to burden the list...unless there's any other interest? Thank you so much for all your help! Best wishes, Karen E. Cresap [email protected]
