Hi Linda: So far in my research I have 4 (old) CROWS in my line: Jacob, Mary, Rebecca, and William. I'll keep looking. I'll be driving to Moundsville for research in June. Is Mt. Rose nearby? I could look for you. Rhonda
The Court Theater was located across the street, diagonally from the Court House, which is still there, and still in use. The theater, however, closed about 20 years ago. Susie

In case you don't have this, this is what I have.... in 1850 Samuel appears w/mother Lydia, ages 22 and 44 respectively, he being born in VA (probably future WVA) and she born in PA. In 1860, Samuel and Lucinda appear...his age 33 b. in VA; wife, Lucinda is 28 b. in PA; Joseph is 6 b. in PA; John W. is 4 b. in PA; Theodore is 2 1/2 b. in VA; Lydia, the mother is 58 b. in VA. (now for one thing, from 1850 to 1860 is 10 yrs. and adding 10 onto their ages in the 1850 census doesn't add up and secondly, birthplaces have changed from one state to another--but wasn't there a dispute between PA and VA way back when about their boundaries?)..ummm??? In 1870, Samuel is 40 b. in WV; Lucinda is 40 b. in WV; Joseph is 19 b. in WV; Theodore is 12 b. in WV; Slater is 10 b. in WV; Mary is 5 b. in WV... ummm, some birthplaces moved again! Do they know where they're from? John W. isn't mentioned in this one. In 1880, Samuel is 52 b. in WV; Lucinda is 50 b. in PA; by now Joseph is married to Anna and listed elsewhere; John W. is 22 b. in PA; Dora is 19 b. in WV; James is 17 b. in WV; Mollie is 14 b. in WV...now we're back to waffling on ages and birthplaces again..and where to some of these kids come from and where is some of them go?...I'm even more convinced that these people are who I'm looking for...I just remembered that I have a picture of my grandmother's sister, Mary Dora, who went to Texas!! But they sure are leaving me in a confused STATE (no pun, intended). Please email me back if you have anything more to add to this and if there is anyone else out there that can enlighten me, please feel free to do so.

I don't think Virginia is the mother of Harry as it appears that John had only been married to Virginia for 15 years. She is apparently the mother of your John though. I did a quick marriage check on the Marshall County site which is hosted by Linda Fluharty and found a John Noble that married an Eliza Cain on 15 Aug 1839. I did not see a marriage record for Virginia which would have occurred about 1885. Hope this helps. There is quite a bit of information on Linda's site which another poster has given you a link to. She has one of the best county sites in the country. Her hard work has been a blessing to many people. It would be good to check it out. Billy
Does anybody know if the Marshall Co. Poor House kept any records, and where would they be. I believe a clue to my BOGARD'S may be in a 1870 census with Abram Bogard 96 from NJ listed. The poor house was listed in Washington Twp. Also any info in the history books? Thanks, Nancy Bogard Gardner, Seattle WA

The federal government runs this office, and will tell you if someone is now or has ever been an inmate in any federal prison. I wrote to them about an ancestor of my husband, he was supposed to have served a year and a day in the prison in Moundsville, but they had no record. I received a reply from this Inmate Locator very quickly, and they verified he had never served time anyplace. Good luck, Marguerite

John Wesley CHAMBERS was my great-grandfather. My mother remembered the old stories of a Grandma Lucy and Grandpa Sam. There was also a continuation of the family names. John Wesley named one of his sons Slater (The younger brother of your Joseph 7 my John was named Slater, a rather unusual name). This, together with the census records leads me to believe that Samuel & Lucinda are the parents of my John Wesley & likely the parents of your Joseph. I have been unable to locate any birth or baptism records for John Wesley. I suppose it is the old family mention of Sam & Lucy that assures me I am on the right track. My great-grandparents (John Wesley CHAMBERS & his wife, Sophronia "Fronie" Samantha SIVERT lived in Cameron, Marshall Co., WVA. I haven't done anything on this line for ages. Keep in touch! All clues are leading me to believe that this Joseph W. Chambers is my great grandfather. In the 1870 census, Joseph is the son of a Samuel and Lucy Chambers and he is 19 years old, which would match what little info I have for him. Most of my grandmother's siblings carry on the given names of this family...Sam, Lucy, Mary, Jospeh....etc. My grandmother was born in Marshall County and I've gone to the court house to retrieve their birth records, and it seems they moved quite a bit but stayed in the general areas of Moundsville, Cameron, Dallas Pike, and around Wheeling. If this Joseph is who I'm thinking he is, then he ended up in Belmont County, Ohio where he and his wife Annie are buried. I have the names of the children of this union, but can't seem to definitely attach this Joseph W. to anyone except by matching birthdates on a census, having a general idea of his locality origin and just having ! an old gut feeling.
Hello Listers, I posted the email below to the WV-WAGS mailing list b/c of the OH County connection, but today I discovered the LEONHART family in Benwood on the 1860 Census & given the info (as noted below) that Caroline LEONHART DOBLER lived "about 3 mi south of Wheeling...." in 1862, am posting to this mailing list also in hopes someone can help. ----- I realize this is a long shot, but here goes. According to the LDS site, a Joseph DODLER (believe that's an error & it should be DOBLER) married Caroline LEONHART 04 Jul 1869 OH County, WV. It's possible that this Caroline LEONHART is the same person who gave a statement in 1915 when my ggrandmo, Margaret A. SCHUT SMITH, applied for a widow's pension after my ggrandfa, Samuel B. SMITH (a Civil War Vet), died. In this statement Mrs. Caroline DOBLER says she was Caroline LEONHART in 1862 & "resided about three miles south of Wheeling, in West Virginia and she lived within about one block of Margaret A. SCHUTT" (the surname SCHUTT has also been found spelled SCHUT and SCHOTT) and that she - Caroline LEONHART DOBLER - was a witness to the marriage of Margaret SCHUTT & Samuel B. SMITH. If anyone is researching LEONHART, I'd be pleased if you'd check for any reference to my ggrandmo, Margaret A. SCHUT SMITH - such as a LEONHART having known her, witnessing her marriage, whatever. I'm having a heck of a time finding anything about this SCHUT family so am collecting any tidbits I can find. Thanks so much for checking. Nancy (email: nsedwards@mindspring.com)
