Hi Andy, I also found some interesting facts in my line. I have a Grandfather who died 40 years before I was born. He served in the 3rd. WV Cal. and died 1891. He was 43 when my Dad was born and my Dad was 51 when I was born. My Great Great Grandfather was born 1750, fought in the Revolutionary War and died 1848. Isn't there some amazing facts in genealogy? Thanks for sharing Arden in WV > My great-grandfather, John W. Morris, served in Company F of the 116th Ohio > Volunteer Infantry before moving to Pleasants County around 1870. He died > in Ritchie County in 1912, 60 years before I was born! > > Andy Morris

Does anyone have a list of funeral homes in the county in 1926. I believe they lived in the Belton area-or possibly Denver area. I already checked the Antil and Grissell records online. Pam
WV-WAGS-L@rootsweb.com WVMARSHA-L@rootsweb.com Hi All, I've never liked the message board messages as they are always trucated when I get them. Does anyone know why this happens, and does it happen to others of you or only happen to me? This happens on all maillists I belong to when it is originally a message board post that has been forward to our list. For example >V02 #140 The message about Dunkards Bottom looked like this >Does anyone know the location of Dunkard Bottom, probably in Monongalia >County? It was active during the late 1700's and proably thru about 1850? Looking Then in V02 #141 when the original message was repeated it the ending was completed: > County? It was active during the late 1700's and proably thru about 1850? Looking >for Mary Grady who married David Trowbridge probably 1794. They >moved to Kingwood, WV. Sylvia Sligar
Hi, all, Although the possibility of finding a birth, death, or marriage record for the 1840's is probably impossible, can someone help me with the following: If a marriage, birth, or death occurred in 1840 in what is now Marshall County, WV, what state would have the records, Virginia or West Virginia? Thanks for any thoughts on this. Isabella botmline@sprynet.com
My name is Kathy Carrico and I am a good friend of Carlisle Bowling's. We met over 21 years ago when I flew down to Florida. My mom had worked for Carlisle in the past and she had a horrific automobile accident. Carlisle is the one who took time to find me (way up in Alaska) and inform me of the crash. He met me at the airport when I arrived and immediately took me to the hospital. He was there for me every step of the way for the next eight weeks while my mom went through 10 operations. He was my lifeline then and now I want to be his. Carlisle, for those of you who don't know, broke his right (femur) in two places on May 26. He was hospitalized in traction for 20 days after the major surgery and a second surgery because of abscessed and infected stitches, on July 23. He also spent a month in a nursing home. He now is bed ridden at home. He has a hospital bed set up in his living room and has a nurse come in every other day to take care of many of his medical needs. It is going to be at least another two to four months of immobilization. I was down to visit him for a week in August and know first hand his bad state of affairs although he remains upbeat and determined to walk some again! Carlisle has always been there for us and now we need to help him. His medical bills are mounting and he eventually is going to need a motorized cart to help him once he is out of bed. The minister at his church has set up a special fund for Carlisle to help with the enormous costs of his recovery. Below is the name and address where you can send your tax-free donation. I hope you all will open up your hearts to our dear friend and help him out. I know he would do the same for us. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me and I will get back to you ASAP. My email address is tfairyt@mosquitonet.com. Checks made out to Christ Presbyterian Church should be sent to: Christ Presbyterian Church ATT: Fleet Collins, Special Donations 1035 West Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach, FL 32174-9169 Please mark the memo spot on your check with the word "Donation" and attach a small note saying it is for the "Carlisle Bowling Outreach Ministry Fund" One final word.Carlisle is alone all day every day while his wife and son run the family business. So email him at Zarvon@aol.com or call him at (386) 672-7966 to let him know he is not alone. Thanks, Kathy

Hi, all, I found some of my ancestors in the Grisell Funeral Home Records and would like to send for copies of the death certificates but I have a few questions. #1. Do I send my request to Moundsville and what is the fee? #2. What information is likely to be found on the death certificate? I'm sure these questions have been asked before, but I can't seem to locate the answer in the list archives. Thanks for any help you all can give. Isabella botmline@sprynet.com
I just wanted everyone to have a second opinion about "Sherrard, Then and Now". I grew up in Sherrard and left when I was 20, and Lois' book, in my opinion, is the definitive guide on the history of our community. It is obvious that a great deal of time and love went into every page of this book. I conceder it one of my most valuable books in my collection. Best regards, Karl McCombs -----Original Message----- From: LCFlu@aol.com [mailto:LCFlu@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, September 22, 2002 6:42 PM To: WVMARSHA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Books for sale, etc. Hi, Everyone: As I am sitting here doing some research, I came upon two really useful books that I have not mentioned for a very long time, if ever. One is "Historical Collections of Moundsville, West Virginia." Originally compiled by J. H. Brantner, it is sold by the Marshall County Historical Society. It contains information not found online or in the other Marshall County History books that I have seen. Because it specifically pertains to Moundsville, there is more detail about certain aspects of the early settlements, the industries, newspapers, etc. - -The cost is $27.50. Marshall County Historical Society P. O. Box 267 Moundsville, WV 26041 The other book is "Sherrard, Then and Now" by my friend, Lois Edison. There is an abundance of info about the history and the families of Sherrard. I have not talked to Lois about the book since it first came out but this is the info I had about it previously: The cost is $28.15, including postage. WV residents must add an additional $1.50 for sales tax. Send orders to: Lois Edison, R. D. #3, Box 202, Wheeling, WV 26003. In case I didn't tell you about my friend, Lois, we graduated from Sherrard High in 1965. I became an RN but Lois didn't go back to school until a few years ago. This past May, she graduated from the Northern Community College in Wheeling and is now a Respiratory Therapist. The best part is that she was the VALEDICTORIAN of her class! I am SO proud of her. - - I might add that she just had her 55th birthday - so it is never too late to start a career. Also on the subject of Sherrard High, I want to say that a few days ago, I was very pleased to get an email from my high school Home Ec teacher, Elizabeth Kessinger Booth - "Peggy Booth." She was a brand new teacher when she came to Sherrard High when I was a freshman. I recall her engagement, marriage and first child! She was a wonderful role model and I cannot begin to tell you how much I learned from her! Finally, if you have not looked at the Cockayne House site, please take a look at the October Events page. I was going to try to make it up for the event on Oct 4th but my doctor thinks it is too soon for me to be traveling and dealing with luggage. - - I did, however, donate something for the auction. Here is a third opinion about Lois' book. I have never been in Sherrard but since reading Lois' book I feel like I know it quite well. My McCombs family is listed in 1850 Marshall Cty census along with six other McCombs families but I haven't been able to make a connection as yet. Also have a professional photograph which looks just like the one Lois has on page 254 but that Sarah Morgan McCombs Pelley is not mine but sure looks the person in my photograph. Also have a professional photograph with Grandmother Sherrard on the back in one hand writing and Stella Barnet in another handwriting and have been unable to make a connection here either. Lois' book has several possiblities for match ups for me, but alas, so far none. Judy, realizing this is a dumb question - Have you looked at any of the Agricultural census's? I attended a seminar led by a woman from Virginia. She did a couple of studies where she compared data from the regular census to the Agricultrual Census's and found many people that had not been identified on either one or the other. If some of the people stayed it may be worth a try.
