Dear List: I, as one of the McHenry Family researchers, would like to thank Tammy BURCH for her rereading and posting of the BURCH Cemetery. While I really appreciate all the work that Mrs. BRIGGS did reading all the cemeteries in Marshall County (and what a task and "undertaking" that must have been), I have always been perplexed with some of the entries she had listed for this cemetery. It really appears that Tammy BURCH of Mocksville, NC has done a very thorough job of reading this cemetery, apparantly in a much better condition now than when Mrs. Briggs had to deal with a "terribly overgrown" cemetery. I am very pleased that additional stones were dug out, turned over, or were now able to be read. Linda Fluharty, our WONDERFUL and TIRELESS worker bee coordinator has asked some of the McHENRY researchers to comment on the new posting. That I am happy to do for the list, as a lot of these "readings" now make much more sense to me. Let me start with Tammy's posting of the McHENRY graves she found. Probably the MOST SIGNIFICANT discovery are the graves of "Malvina, wife of O. G. MASON, daughter of G. W. and A. McHENRY" and that of "Joseph" of the exact same parentage. The interesting discovery here is that we now know the middle initial of George McHENRY who married Anne McHENRY, which to my knowledge, has been unknown until this time. It is well documented that Malvina, the wife of Oliver G. MASON, was definitely the daughter of George McHENRY and Anne (McHENRY) McHENRY (yes Anne was a McHENRY in her own right.) I do have a question for Tammy though--please check your notes as you say that Malvina died June 19, 1871 and was 34 years 12 months and 12 days old. That is impossible. I think it should be 1 month as I have her birthdate as May 7, 1837. This also now gives us a definite birth date for Joseph McHENRY since he died on April 19, 1855 and was 15 years 11 months and 22 days old. Also significant is the finding of the graves of "Margaret J., daughter of J. & A. McHENRY, December 14, 1856" and her brother "Franklin, son of J. & A. McHENRY Mar. 25, 1857". These HAVE TO BE the children of James McHENRY (son of James McHENRY and Rebecca (WHITE) McHENRY and his FIRST WIFE Anna BERKLEY. Until this time, we have had NO children listed for James and Anna, and now we have two. Also interesting is that James McHENRY himself is buried there having died on July 27, 1884 at 69 years. And now one of the MOST INTERESTING items of all, is the posting of the grave of "Benjamine, son of J & M. J. McHENRY died December 11, 1860--8 years 4 months 14 days." Why is this so important---because Mrs. Briggs had read this stone as "Benjamin son of J. D. McHENRY 11 Dec. 1860 - 8/11/11. 1. This is obviously the son of James McHENRY and his SECOND WIFE Mary Jane (MOORE) McHENRY. (We have him listed in the records as Benjamin F. McHENRY born August 1, 1854 and died December 11, 1862, the dates of which are obviously incorrect. He is listed in the 1860 Marshall County Census Record with James and Mary J. and sh shown as age 7--so the 1860 death date is most probably correct.) 2. This James McHENRY is carried throughout the genealogy records of most of the family researchers as James (D.?) {evidentally based on Mrs. Brigg's cemetery reading} McHENRY, and we now clearly see that is not correct, and he has to go bact to just being another in the LONG STRING of "James McHENRY" people we have to deal with. Still very puzzleing to me are the three brothers "Amstard, Hiram, and Anaslow McHENRY", who all appear to be sons of J. and S. A. McHENRY. Very interesting is the fact that Hiram is listed in the research records as a son of George and Anne McHENRY, discussed above. (Mrs. Briggs has Hiram's stone reading "son of C. & A. McHenry, Aug 7, 1865--11 years old."). There are no listings in the 1860 Census for any of these boys. I have NO "J. McHENRY" who is married to anyone with the initials of "S. A.". So I have no idea Amstard, Hiram, or Ansalow belong to. Does anyone else have an idea? I do have some comments on the BURCH postings and the Lowery postings, but I will wait and do them in another e-mail. Please, everyone, jump on the band wagon and tell me what you think. Hi all! I am still working on the Marshall County cemeteries map, though I had to give it up until after Thanksgiving because I am buried under a stack of papers to grade and papers to write and neither stack seems to be getting any shorter. In any case, I have some idea about the Leach Cemetery. The only cemetery that I have been able to find on Rt. 36 is Whitegate, the Prison Cemetery. I have looked on several different types of maps, including road atlas versions and topographic maps, which should reveal all of the cemeteries. (It turns out, however, that that is not the case.) There is a cemetery located at the intersection of 250 and Rt. 38 called Buchanan Hill Cemetery. That is all of the information I have at the moment. I will bug my dad again and see what information he has. He was a "ridge runner" all his life, so he might know where another one is. I have made a great deal of progress on the cemetery map. The most difficult task is collating and comparing several different kinds and types of maps and coming up with the right location and name of these cemeteries. In reference to the question about the absence of Leach Cemetery from Mrs. Briggs' list, there are several cemeteries (more than a dozen) that are not mentioned on her list. I think that she probably ran out of time, and some of these are in remote and heavily overgrown areas. I hope that I have been of help. I will keep you updated as to the progress of the map. It should be very extensive when I finish it. At this point, I think it will be in at least three, maybe four parts. Christina Parsons Ohio University Athens, Ohio
She was probably scared to death, too! << is there a reason Mrs.Briggs list doesn't show a Leach Cemetary >>
I am looking for information on George Woods: On Dec. 27, 1814 Actia Burch (born 1797) married George Woods(born1794)at Crab Apple Creek, Greene Co. Pa. George was in the War of 1812. He enlisted on March 15,1812 in Wheeling, Va. The company was commanded by Captain William Gill. Actia was the oldest daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth Burch according to the will of Jesse. His son Richard and his wife were the Exectors. Actia used the name Mackey. Could it have been Elizabeth's maiden name? George and Actia had 11 children they lived in the 33rd District of Ohio Co. which became Marshall County. I am looking for his parents. Jean Logston
Can anyone do a lookup for the following marriage record? Barbary K Bowers and J. L. McDonald 2/20/1876, by Rev. Rossell, Richhill Twp, Green Co, PA. This is just over the line from Marshall Co. WV. We are interested in the parents of both of these persons. Barbara McDonald 28, widowed, b. 1852, Germany appears on the Cameron Dist, Marshall Co, WV census for 1880. Two children Ellen b. 1877, and Gracey b. 1879, and a George Bowers 22, bro. single, livery man b. 1858 WV, parents born Germany. We believe Barbary and George Bowers are the same people who appear on the 1860 & 1870 cen Moundsville, Marshall Co WV with Frederick and Lucinda Bowers. Later generations spelled surname Bauer. Thanks for any help you can give us. Hope somebody might link up to us through this inquiry!
Mike (and group), In reference to your question >2. I am looking for how to get to the orginal family farm of the Murdock's... I have had very good success getting information and maps from Naomi Lowe at this address. Marshall County Historical & Genealogical Society Attn: Naomi Lowe 1310 Sixth Street Moundsville, WV 26041 She has been a great resource for me and even came up with a plat map of Marshall showing the location of my ancestor's land. Everything is paid for by donation to the society. She has done research for me and suggested a very reasonable donation amount. Maybe you will have good luck also by writing to her. I, for one, would like to give Linda Fluharty a great big "THANK YOU" for all her time consuming work on the revamping of the Marshall County site Military Pages. She has done a splendid job, and even though she is a "volunteer" It is still nice to hear those two words "THANK YOU" once in a while. We all need to use those two words more in our every day life--THEY COST NOTHING--yet give us so much! Try them out today on your family, friends, coworkers, and aquaintances---see the difference it makes. Linda------THANK YOU for the MANY MANY HOURS you dedicate to our MARSHALL PAGES and for helping others with their genealogical quests. Sincerely, Carlisle Bowling [email protected]

Her name is Mary Stewart (1789-1853) and she married David McDowell. Also, have you been in touch with Dawn Hurd? She has been preparing to write the newest Gorby book Maybe you can help each other? Which cemetary are you refering to? THere are Baptist, Univeralist, Christian Church and Oak Grove Methodist. Oak Grove will be the first one you will come to if you come up Fork Ridge from Moundsville. The Christain Church will be the next one, they are all on Fork Ridge, you will have no problem finding them. If you come up 250 from Moundsville, turn on to Fork Ridge, you will come to the Baptist first, they are one right after each other on the ridge. Any other help I might be let me know. I live about 5 miles from fork Ridge. Good Luck, Shirley
Could anyone give us directions to Fork Ridge Cemetery? We will be coming from St. Clairsville, Ohio or Moundsville. Thank You Hazel Spahr in Belle Vernon, PA
Dear all, Thank you for all that has written to me. I am working on getting the information that You have requested. There are some of you that have asked me about cd's I do not have to do look ups on. I only have world family trees cd's 1-17, when they have the next bundle ready, I will buy them, but I will not pay 40 dollars per cd, 60 for 5 is bad enough. Also would you mind so greatly to look to see if you might have a match yourself, and just the surnames I dont know what ones you are wanting (like JONES), there could be 1000 listings, it maybe none of your relitives, the site is www.familytreemaker.com and click on the internet family finder or the direct but I dont know if it works is www.familytreemaker.com/ifftop.html sometimes they work and sometimes they dont. I have been down with a back problem, first day in 5 I am up and around to do much of anything. Just a little here and there. Take care all. Hi New to this list. Been watching awhile. Need help on some of my surnames from the Moundsville area. SURNAMES below. Any and all help is greatly appreciated and am willing to share what little I have. SURNAMES IN MARSHALL CO.: GRANDON, DARDINGER, MILLER, WILLIAMS Thanks in advance. Polly in Colo.Sprgs.
A good place to put your family information in on these World family trees, they are published with a family number, and when some one finds your information and it matches with theres, the family tree maker area, you can find out who sent that in, and in turn write to them and maybe exchange information. I have found a lot on the families I have researched and exchanged a lot of information with each one on the world family trees. go to www.familytreemaker.com and see how you may also have your family tree published. It is easy and fun. Also at this area you can look up your family names, and if you have a hit, let me know the name, cd # and the family # on the cd. I buy the bundles as they come out, it is much more affordable. Happy hunting, Gail Meeks ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
I am looking for any information on the Antil/Antle/ Antill families who were in Marshall County off and on after about 1870. Many of them settled in and around Cameron. They seemed to go back and forth from Marshall County to Greene Co., PA. I know that some of the descendants are still around the area. Would love to hear more about this family.
