Christina: It wasn't me on those back roads in Marshall!!! I didn't have time to get down there from Wash. Co while we were on vacation in Pa last month (from TX!). I'm interested in your MEEK line. 3. Sorry to bug everyone again, but I know that you might like to hear about this. My brother just sent away for a genealogy book, _The New World Book of Burgys_, hoping that it would be informative and lead us to more information for our gen searches. Well, as promised his name and my father's name was in it, but the book is clearly a rip off. The first three fourths of the book contains information that you could find in any genealogy or history book, such as chapters on heraldry, history of migration in America, Ellis Island, etc. The only part of this thin book that discusses the Burgys is the last 20 or so pages, and it is all information that a novice researching could find with a little looking. So, beware of these new world books. I suspect that they are keeping a template of the front information, and then adding the back matter to personlize each book, but at a cost of over $40. Just thought that you would want to know. Christina

    1. AMAZING!

    3. Along the lines of Linda's chance meeting of someone from the area, I thought that I would pass this along. My friend Lisa, who lives in St. Joseph, said that the other day a someone in a car with Texas plates kept driving through Lynn Camp (right before you get to St. Joseph) and stopping people for directions to the Lynn Camp Cemetery. No one goes there anymore, according to Lisa, so everyone was amazed to find someone searching for the place. The stopped at the general store out there, and a couple driving a car with California plates got out of their car and asked for directions to the same cemetery!! But, that isn't the amazing part, it turns out that they were all looking for the grave of the same person and did not even know each other! Imagine that, two people from far out west searching for the same relative in an overgrown cemetery in the country side of WV. I just had to pass it on. Christina

    3. Philip Nice b 1812 in Moundsville WV mar Rebecca Meek. For years heard he was raised in York Ridge area but something I read makes me think that this might be Fork Ridge. Checking online census found a Caleb Nice but could not find a firm connection beween him & Philip. Can anyone give suggestions as to other places to look. I have him & his family in Washingto Co. Oh. in 1850. Is there anything written about the Fork Ridge area? Anything about churches in that area with their congregation records? Would land records be in VA or OH or PA for that time period? As I/m homebound can't get to a library to order & check films. So need reading materials. Thanks L Grantham [email protected]

    3. -- [ From: Sandra Lewis * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Linda, I know I speak for many, many others that subscribe to this list and use the Genweb county pages. No one could have expressed their disgust and frustration with the coordinators and others "involved" in the Genweb project better than you did. I cannot add a thing to your comments, except that I wholeheartedly agree with you. I want you to know how much we all admire and appreciate all that you do. NO ONE CARES about the petty bureaucracy of the coordinates, etc. I really don't have a clue as to what that woman was ranting & raving about a few days ago and really don't care. What we care about is being able to share and receive genealogical information. You have done a remarkable job and truly have one of the very best county pages on the Genweb! I cannot thank you enough. Just continue on with the way you have done things from the beginning, Linda. You cannot escape petty, small minded people with an exaggerated idea of their own importance, but you can turn your back on them and ignore the meanspirited infighting. This you have done very well, Linda , with professionalism and a justifiable pride in your efforts. Sandra Lewis (CHAMBERS, SIVERT, BELL, FISH) [email protected]

    1. Martins
    2. Marilee Tolman
    3. Pat, I have been looking through my notes on the Martins, looking for the name Bonham. No luck. I do have a note of a Nancy Martin that died in Fayette Co. GA. in 1860. Her age is given as 84. Also a B. Martin who died in Warren Co. KY. in 1850. His age is given as 77. Both of these individuals were born in VA. In searching further, I found a land record for a Benjamin Martin. He bought land through the Marrietta, OH. land office in 1838 and 1848. If this is my Benjamin (and I am finding there are lots of Benjamin Martins), and he is related to Bonham, then that may be the direction that we need to look now. It sure is nice to have someone to bounce idea's off of. Until now I had not found anyone that was researching Martins in the PA., W.VA., and OH areas. marilee

    1. Actia BURCH
    2. To the List: In digging today for other information I came across an e-mail I received from Jean Logston <[email protected]> dated August 21, 1997. It said, and I quote: (hope Jean doesn't mind but if it can help us clear up problems, I think she would be happy): "To Carlisle Bowling "I'm trying to find proof that Actia BURCH was a daughter of Jessie BURCH. So far I know that Richard T., Jessie Jr., Zephariah, and Eliza are the children of Jessie. It is highly probable that Actia also belongs to the family, but positive proof has eluded me. "But Jessie Jr. named one of his daughters Actia. Richard T., when he was 80, wrote a letter to the war department to testify that he was at Actia's wedding when he was 14 years old. Actia was trying to get a widow's pension of George WOODS in the war of 1812. "Actia had eloped in 1814 to Greene County Pennsylvania to marry George WOODS. Actia named the first three of eleven children, Richard, Jessie B., and Eliza. She was the right age to be a daughter of Jessie BURCH, being born April 14, 1797 and of course, her maiden name was BURCH. But, those are all indicators, not the proof I need. How can you help me? "I am aware that Zephariah married Ruth McHENRY, Richard married Isabella McHENRY, and Robert McHENRY married Eliza BURCH. There were several marriages of BURCHES into the MAYHALL Family as well, I think into Richard's line. "Actia and George WOODS moved to Lisbon, Iowa around 1852, but quite a few of their children stayed in Marshall County. Only three, Lewis, Caroline, and Mary went with them to Iowa. "I'm glad to talk to someone interested in the BURCH family. Actia was my great-great grandmother. Clarence BURCH, Jessie jr.'s son, who had a store on Lafayette Avenue in Moundsville, West Virginia in the early 1900's was my Grandfather John LEACH's cousin. "I don't know who Actia's mother was either. Thanks for any help you can give. Jean Logston" Interestingly enough, I have a hand written note on the side of this hard-copy e-mail which says: "Buchannon Hill Cemetery--Actia BURCH died June 5, 1854 at age 4 years, 10 months 16 days., daughter of J. & Z. also there were: Samuel BURCH, died Jan. 8, 1854--3 yrs 0months 19 days and also David BURCH but the dates were not readable by the reader of the cemetery. Thought this was interesting and maybe someone can shed some additional light on this. Carlisle Bowling e-mail [email protected]

    2. Peggy Green
    3. Hello Marshall Co. Listers, Thanks Linda, that is so wild! That Elizabethtown is MOUNDSVILLE- I appreciate your sharing the great article on it's history with me. That clears up that. I will pass it along to the McCulloughs researching the ALLMAN and MARTIN descendants. Any MARTIN or ALLMAN descendants of Bonham and Nancy/Anne (McCullough) Martin and Benjamin and Mary (McCullough) Allman- I would love to hear from you. We are trying to find the children of the Descendants of John and Sarah McCullough who were in Washington/Greene Co., PA, from 1789. My McCullough line went from Greene Co., PA to TYLER CO., WV- JOSEPH and ELEANOR (GRANDON) MCCULLOUGH. Joseph and Eleanor's children married into RESSEGGER, MILLER, FOGG, MASTERS, FINDLEY, and FLUHARTY families. Their son Joseph L. McCullough and wife Malinda GORBY's children married A.W. RICE, J. Clarence STARKEY, Thomas GIBLIN, Rebecca E. SHEPHARD, Cora PIPES, Emma Elizabeth MAURY, and Jenkins M. C. MILLER. My great Grandparents, REV. LEWIS ELSWORTH and IRENA FRANCES (FLOYD) RESSEGGER, lived in Moundsville and both died there. Rev. Ressegger was a Methodist minister. I am still looking for Rev. Lewis Ressegger's brothers and sisters, the children of JACOB and SAMANTHA A. (MCCULLOUGH) RESSEGGER, who lived in Wetzel County in the 1860's-1880's. Their children would have been born after 1866, probably in Wetzel County. Samantha (McCullough) Ressegger remarried to a Mr. KING, after Jacob died, and had a few more children. Anyone with RESSEGGERS (also spellled RESECKER, REASECKER, RESSIGER, RUEGSEGGER, etc.) please contact me if we haven't already connected. Have a colorful day, Peg in WV [email protected]

    1. Benjamin Martin
    2. Peggy Green
    3. Hello Marshall Co. Researchers, Marilee, I am working on the MARTIN family who were in Marshall Co.- in particular, I am trying to gather info on BONHAM SR. and NANCY/ANNE (MCCULLOUGH) MARTIN, who moved from Greene Co., PA, to Marshall Co. (on Fish Ck., possibly a place named Elizabethtown), before 1836. Bonham Martin was born ca. 1770's, the son of John and Rachel (Tate) Martin. I think Bonham and Nancy probably married in PA, ca.1800-1810. Bonham is in the PA censuses for 1800 (Washington Co., West Bethlehem Twp), 1810 (Greene Co., Morgan Twp.), & 1820 (Greene Co., Morgan Twp.). I think he is the Bonham Martin in Ohio Co., (W) VA 1830 census and the 1840 Marshall Co., (W) VA census.. Nancy (McCullough) Martin's sister, MARY (MCCULLOUGH) ALLMAN, and her husband, BENJAMIN ALLMAN, were also in the Ohio Co., (W) VA 1830 Census and, then, in the 1840 Marshall Co., (W) VA Census. Mary and Benjamin Allman moved to Wood Co., WV before the 1860 census. I think that your BENJAMIN MARTIN (b. Abt. 1816, in PA) could possibly be a child of Bonham and Nancy/Anne (McCullough) Martin. I don't have any of their children, yet, but Benjamin Martin is listed in the next household to Bonham in the 1840 Marshall Co. census. Benjamin might be a nephew if not the son of Bonham. Benjamin Martin is in the 1840 Marshall Co., (W) VA census, house #357, with 4 persons: 1 male under 5; 1 female under 5; 1 male 20-30; and 1 female 20-30. Bonham and Nancy/Anna Martin both died after 1847, but I don't know where or when. It's a good possibility that they moved west (with Benjamin and Mary?). There are some Martin Family histories on the Washington Co., PA "BEERS" pages, at: <http://www.chartiers.com/beers-project/articles/> I'm not sure if Benjamin is in them, but you might check. Best regards to all, Peg in WV
