I just found some notes my mother had written down a few years ago. In them she mentions that Grandma Chambers told her often that she had a greatuncle with "quite a reputation" and that must be where her artistic talent came from. Grandma Chambers was born Sophronia Samantha "Fronie" SIVERT, b. March 10. 1862 d. Feb. 1, 1945. She was married to John Westley CHAMBERS, b. Feb., 1856 D. March 12, 1922. They lived in Cameron, Marshall Co., WV & had (11) children. (John Westley CHAMBERS was the son of Samuel & Lucinda CHAMBERS, Son of Samuel CHAMBERS& Lydia BELL, son of Edward CHAMBERS & Martha FISH). I know very little about Sophronia except the above. I am hoping that the artist she spoke of was her brother. Of course, it may have been a CHAMBERS, too. Would anyone know how I might begin to look for information on this greatuncle? I'm at a loss as to how to begin and the SIVERT side is my "Brick Wall". Thanks, Sandy Lewis (CHAMBERS, SIVERT, BELL, FISH)
There is a William GORBY in the 1870 Wetzel Co census that is about the right age of your William (who married Rebecca JACKSON). Magnolia Twp, 188-188 William GORBY, age 50, VA, farmer Elcy, 50, VA, keep house Josephus, 15, VA Dudly, 15, VA William, 14, VA Selby, 12, VA James, 10, VA There are several other GORBY families in 1870 Wetzel Co; several around this William's age and a couple that could be married children of this William. Do you know the names of Rebecca's children? This GORBY family lives close to some of my MORGAN relatives, however, I didn't notice MORGAN listed as one of the surnames you are researching. Hi Linda: Jacob Pyles was born circa 1825 PA and died 16 MAR 1885, buried at Jolliffe Cemetery, Silver Hill, Wetzel Co, WV. He was the s/o John Pyles & Mary. Mary Ann Burge was born circa 1832 VA and married Jacob Pyles on 18 FEB 1847, Marshall Co, WV. Book 1 pg 48. She was the d/o Elijah Burge & Elizabeth Goddard. Elizabeth Goddard was the d/o William Goddard & Elizabeth. William Goddard was the s/o Francis Lane Goddard & Mary. #205 Franklin District, Marshall County 1870 Piles, Jacob 50 PA, Mary A 36 VA, Elizabeth A 22 VA, Julia A 18 VA, Mary E 16 VA, John L 11 VA, Vandiver 10 VA, Wilfred 5 WV I do not have an 1880 census listing for Jacob, he must have moved back to Wetzel County. I have more info on the Goddard, Burge, and Pyle families if Joel does not have this. All for now, Vernon
Dear List-- I know that if anyone can clear up a mystery, the wonderful people on this list can. The other day I ran across a reference to "The Elmer Evans Post" on Bowman's Ridge in reference to the Civil War. I am hoping that someone will tell me about this "Post" as it is VERY IMPORTANT to me. The Story: My wife's grandfather (my son's great grandfather), he was "ALFRED CLARENCE ELMER EVANS", always told his family that from the time he was just a little boy (born in 1891) he was told that he was named after THREE of his Uncles that were killed in the Civil War---Alfred EVANS----Clarence EVANS----and Elmer EVANS. I have looked everywhere for any of these three men in connection to the Civil War and had not found anything---until pops up the ELMER EVANS POST of the GAR on Bowman's Ridge. Blew my mind!!!! I know that the father of Alfred Clarence Elmer EVANS was Enoch Jackson EVANS who was the son of Samuel EVANS--died in Marshall County about 1855--and his widow Nancy remarried John McDONALD (though the marriage record says McCONNELL but further census records all show McDONALD). Enoch Jackson EVANS died in February 1912 at the Sherrard Post Office when he fell off his horse. Pneumonia had killed him. Can someone please tell me about the Elmer EVANS Post or if you know anything about the other "brothers" please let me know. None of these boys are listed as Samuel's sons. Thanks, Carlisle Bowling [email protected]
Hi All: Rebecca Jackson was the daughter of William Jackson & Cassandra Garrison. That is all the info I have. Vernon
Has anyone done research on the Jackson family? I am expecially interested in Rebecca Jackson who married William Gorby in 1839. Does anyone know who her parents are? She was born about 1817, and died 1849 in Wetzel. Since everyone seemed to move between Marshall and Wetzel a lot, I figured someone might have her in their database somewhere. Dawn. Hi Karen & List: There are enough descendants still in Marshall County to publish my answers to the List. You are correct about the Cresap Family book being the one you have. It is primarily a genealogy book. Both Appalachian Power Company and Ohio Power Comany were operating companies of the parent firm, American Electric Power. American Electric Power had 7 different operating companies in 7 states. The Mitchell Plant started out under the direction of Appalachian Power Company. I believe they supervised the construction phase of the plant. Once the plant was operational, Ohio Power took over the running of the plant. Basically the employees remained the same but the management of the plant was shifted to the Canton, OH based Ohio Power Company. American Electric Power, which is based in Columbus, OH, has 3 million customers in portions of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennesse, Virginia, and West Virginia. They also have interest in the United Kingdom and China. In 1996 American Electric Power disbanded all it's operating companies and all business units, including Mitchell Plant, are now under American Electric Power - Americas Energy Partner. In late 1997 AEP announced it's intention to merge with the Dallas, TX based Central and South West Corp. The new merged company will be known as AEP. AEP anticipates a savings of $2 billion over 10 years for it's customers because of elimination of duplicate services. I am not aware of any court documents relating to the moving of this cemetery. The Grisell Funeral Home is a family owned business which has been in operation in Marshall County for 150 plus years. Curtis Grisell who is about 84 and retired was involved in the moving of the graves. I will check to see if I can get copies of the pictures. They were originally slides but pictures were made from the slides in 1997. The cemetery was moved in 1967 but there was new construction in this area in 1997. Vernon
Hi All: I have six George Gatts and I don't have them all. What you have about the 2 George Gatts is correct. Vernon

Hi Vernon and all, WOW! Almost fell off my chair when I read your post! Thanks Vernon! I've spent alot of time researching this summer (and beyond) on exactly what you posted. I'm a direct descendant of both Michael CRESAP Sr. and Jr. I'm posting this to the list also, in case there's any interest. Please see some questions below. > I have an article on the Cresap >family somewhere. I could dig it up if anyone is interested. Would love any articles you might have on this Cresap family or anything regarding this movement of graves. There is >also a Cresap family book in the Moundsville Library I'm sure this book is the History of the Cresaps, which I have a copy of. >His son, Michael Cresap, was born 7 OCT 1775, Oldtown, MD, just 11 days >before the death of his father. This Michael Cresap lived in Marshall >County, at Cresap's Bottom, where Mitchell Power Plant now stands. I thought it was the Appalachian Power Company? Are they connected somehow, or am I wrong? I tried getting a copy of the court papers where the power company was given permission to move the graves....Marshall Co. cannot find any records of it. Do you know anymore about the court's permission or (gasp!) a court case number? > >In 1967, during the construction of Mitchell Plant, Grisell's Funeral Home >was contracted to move those buried in the Cresap Cemetery. Pictures were >taken of this process. Michael & Hannah Cresap were buried in metal/lead >caskets, which were mummy shaped. These caskets also had viewing windows >and were in perfect condition. Everyone who was buried in this cemetery >was moved to, I believe, Graysville Methodist Church Cemetery. New >tombstones were placed on some of the graves, I am not sure who had this >done. > This info is outstanding to me! I now know which funeral home handled it, and I can contact them for more info (if they're still around?). This summer we were doing other CRESAP and HENRETTA research at MT. ROSE Cemetery, and spoke with one of the cemetery workers who remembered helping move the Cresap graves back in the 60's. He's the only reason we ever found Graysville Cemetery. Being the addicted genealogist, I then dragged my fiance thru the back roads and was estatic to see the Cresap headstones. I think Michael's family had the original stones? Can you tell me more? I haven't yet tried contacting the church yet, but plan to do so. Would the funeral home have these pictures? I'd give anything for a picture of CRESAP CEMETERY before it's destruction. >I became involved in making sure all those buried in this cemetery were >moved, in the summer of 1997, during some new construction. As far as >anyone could determine everyone was moved. I'm confused. Is this supposed to be 1967 not 1997? Or was there even more construction in 1997? Was this at Graysville or at the power plant? I'd love to hear anything and everything you can tell about all this. Please contact me direct so as not to burden the list...unless there's any other interest? Thank you so much for all your help! Best wishes, Karen E. Cresap [email protected]
While I was a bit reluctant to post the conservative view of Eckert's materials, I think the responses were *most* informative. And that's what communication is all about! Peg [email protected]
Dawn, I have two George Gatts also. George Gatts s/o Nicholas Gatts and Rebecca Yoho b. 1817 m. Dorcas Parsons on January 24, 1839 - they had two children, Samuel Marion b. 1840 and Mary Elizabeth b. 2/15/1842 George Gatts (1841 - 1875) s/o of Samuel D. Gatts (s/o Nicholas and Rebecca above) and Lucinda Harris. m. Anna Belle Yoho (1845-1924) d/o George & Rachel Garner Yoho on July 19, 1863. (and yes, Rebecca Yoho and Anna Belle Yoho were cousins of a fashion) You may want to also check the Wetzel Co Cenusus. My family which descends from Samuel Gatts and Lucinda Harris moved back and forth across the Wetzel/Marshall line a lot. Hope this helps, Lynne ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Cherie, I also like his books and think he does a great job. Like all sources, you need to check and cross check. But I have learned a lot more from his books then most sources give you. And by the way Eckert's books are in the history section of our library. Jerry Bruhn
While Allan Eckert's narratives are fascinating for those of us who are hooked on history, they are re-creations based on interpretations of primary sources. Perhaps one should consider where libraries catalogue the books or where the bookseller stashes the titles. I have found Eckert's books generally to be shelved with fiction. Peg [email protected]

Hi All: Regarding Captain Michael Cresap. I am not related to the Cresap family but I find this family very interesting. I have an article on the Cresap family somewhere. I could dig it up if anyone is interested. There is also a Cresap family book in the Moundsville Library and the Cresap's have a web page on the internet. Captain Michael Cresap died 18 OCT 1775, New York, and is buried in Trinity Church, New York, NY. He became ill, and died, while leading a company of Maryland Sharpshooters. His son, Michael Cresap, was born 7 OCT 1775, Oldtown, MD, just 11 days before the death of his father. This Michael Cresap lived in Marshall County, at Cresap's Bottom, where Mitchell Power Plant now stands. He died in 1860 and was buried in the Cresap family cemetery. His wife was Hannah Ogle who was born 1785 and died 1862 and was buried in the Cresap cemetery. In 1967, during the construction of Mitchell Plant, Grisell's Funeral Home was contracted to move those buried in the Cresap Cemetery. Pictures were taken of this process. Michael & Hannah Cresap were buried in metal/lead caskets, which were mummy shaped. These caskets also had viewing windows and were in perfect condition. Everyone who was buried in this cemetery was moved to, I believe, Graysville Methodist Church Cemetery. New tombstones were placed on some of the graves, I am not sure who had this done. I became involved in making sure all those buried in this cemetery were moved, in the summer of 1997, during some new construction. As far as anyone could determine everyone was moved. There was also some concern as the Cresap family slaves were supposed to be buried under the Cresap family. No remains were found. Thought you all might find this interesting. Does anyone know if George GATTS is related to Samson GATTS? I am researching my Grandmother (Neva GATTS) line, who's Grandfather was Samson W. GATTS of Marshall County WV. Samson was married to Mary REYNOLDS and 39 years old in 1880. Their children were Franklin, Charles and Maud. I believe Samson's father was Christian D. GATTS, who's wife was also named Mary. Any information about the GATTS (GATS) family line would be appreciated. Duane Also reasearching HOLMES.
Seems I may have committed a faux pas by recommending That Dark and Bloody River as a good source of information. I am on several other other mailing lists for the area along the Ohio River, yet today was the first time I have ever seen any criticism of Eckert or his books. While I think they are great for what they are, I certainly wasn't saying they were completely accurate as far as being "pure" history. Yet I don't think anyone can criticize Eckert's research or his citation of his sources. His amplification notes are thorough, and I have read every one of them in the book I mentioned, and I felt I got a lot out of them. Maybe it's just his interpretation that many feel is debatable. That's something everyone has to decide for himself. I felt that he did a good job of being fair, but others may argue about that. I'm sorry if my opinion upset anyone! Cherie Clark
On the subject of books, Scott Powell wrote a book on the History of Marshall County. One would assume he included his genealogy, although I haven't seen the book. Does anyone know if he was descended from the branch of Powell's that had lived there since it was Ohio County? ie William O. Powell (b. 18020, son of James? Thanks for your time...
