>From Cheryl Hoover <[email protected]> comes this message: I have a book called "The Stump Farm" published in 1929. It's a chronicle of pioneering and deals with the ROSE family. If anyone is searching this family, please let me know, as I would like to get this book into the proper hands. It was written by Hilda Rose, and is more like a diary with lots of pictures of this family. From what I can tell, it appears that this family originated somewhere in Canada and it starts out in 1918. If any of this rings a bell with anyone, please let me know and I will send this book to you. Thank you. Cheryl ==== BlackSheep Mailing List ====

Hello, I am doing research on the following names: Blake, Burge, Neely, Nice, Richmond, Conner, just to name a few. Most of the family was from Marshall County. I am really needing help on the Burge and Conner. Samuel Alexander Conner married Mary M. Wayt. I have been told that the name was O'Connor and then changed to Connor and then to Conner. I have a Henry Burge that married Sarah Nice and John Burge who married Jennie L. Neely. I would appreciate any info and would be willing to share. Thanks in advance for any help. Cyndi
Hi All, This is off topic, but maybe those of you who live in the Marshall Co area would know of a PC computer user group in Ohio or Marshall Counties. If you do please mail me privately either a phone number or email address. Thanks Sylvia [email protected]

Hi folks! After too long just watching the e-mails fly, I've decided to jump in. I've hesitated because I purchased Ultimate Family Tree and wanted to figure out how to use it before I got too far along. I am impressed with the tremendous amount of time and effort Linda spends on the Marshall Co. web page and with the helpfulness I see so many of you exhibit. I spent the first 20+ years of my life on Fork Ridge ... eventually kept moving further away until I ended up in Washington, PA. I'm still on the "ridge" twice a month or more as all of my immediate family is still there. I had started researching the following Marshall Co. families when I still lived there (have more detailed info but this should help anyone recognize whether we connect): My great-grandparents: Adam KUHN - b. 1874 in Wallerfangen Germany; d. 1912 in Moundsville, WV m. Hattie May CLARK - b. 1879; d. 1950 Eli CHURCH - b. 1872; d. 1958 m. Lenora Susan SUMMERS - b. 1878; d. 1965 Samuel U. HARRIS - b. 1846; d. 1936 m. Mary Elizabeth RICHMOND - b. 1849; d. 1926 Charles Gibson ASTON - b. 1864; d. 1948 m. Cancedlea (spelling?) "Della" MCGARY - b. 1868; d. 1958 My grandparents: Herbert KUHN - b. 1898; d. 1972 m. Nellie Bell CHURCH - b. 1902; d. 1999 Charles McClure HARRIS - b. ?; d. 1932 m. Dessie Charlotte ASTON - b. 1899; d. 198? (can't believe I never filled this one in on my chart - will have to dig it out) All four sides of ancestry (KUHN, CHURCH, HARRIS, ASTON) have been tied primarily to Fork Ridge, but also to Moundsville and other areas of the county. Just last week, we buried the last of my grandparents at the Fork Ridge Christian Church cemetery - I guess that's what has motivated me to start in again with a renewed interest. So ....... I'm willing to share and learn from others. Bear with me, though, as I try to adapt my records to the computer age of genealogy. Jo Ellen (KUHN) Dalton e-mail: [email protected]
Good Day Everyone! I began genealogy over three years ago and have been at it nearly every day since. I thoroughly enjoy it! The maternal surnames I am researching in Marshall County, WV are MATUSKA,/MATUSKY, BENCUR, GIBAS, PALUGA/POLUGA and FURTO/FURTOV. I believe these relatives immigrated from Czechoslovakia beginning in the mid to late 1800's. I am also interested in these surnames for Marshall County: BOBASH/BOBASCH, HLADIS, BRNICKY, SKVARKA, SHUTWAY, KACMARAK, KOVACIK. Just a thought...If any of this group's members are lucky enough to have a copy of their ancestor's ship manifest, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could share the other surnames on the manifest? Perhaps those surnames might help a fellow member? I've heard this done on another list. Just a thought... Thanks so much, Roslin Cantrell [email protected]
Nelson & Sarah [SHAFFER] WILDMAN came to the Wetzel & adjacent counties after 1850 from Greene co., PA. Nelson WILDMAN [c1815, prob. PA--1871, Wetzel co., WV] & Sarah [SHAFFER] WILDMAN [c1822--??]; after Nelson's death Sarah married Isaac LOWE. Nelson's brother, Justin WILDMAN, also came to the area with his family. Some of the Wildman families lived at Pine Grove (outside New Martinsville, WV); Justine's family lived in the Tyler county area. Would like to correspond with any descendants of these families. We are trying to compile a more complete history of this WILDMAN line which probably goes back into England. Marilyn [email protected]
Many of my families are from the Botetourt and adjacent county areas. The Thrasher line is my Brick Wall. Here are the only facts I have: The Cronin family are generally from the east going into the Monroe County, OH area (across the river from Pleasants co., VA[WV]). Samuel Cronin [c1819, Monroe co., OH--1894, Pleasants co., WV] m: 1845, Washington co., OH to Sarah Jane Thrasher [?--bet. 1872/77, Pleasants co., WV]; When she died he married her sister, Nancy Thrasher [c1836, OH?--]. A family member said Sarah Jane Thrasher was born in Doddridge co., VA. We think she died in MO, since Samuel & family traved to the MO territory three times, each time coming back with less than when he started... the Indians had a way of encouraging gifts of horses, food, etc. If you can help on this line, I would be a happy camper! Thanks, Marilyn [email protected]
I found the following typewritten transcription of a newspaper article in the papers of my grandmother, Genevieve Hostutler Walton. If some of you more experienced historians, who know the early history of Marshall County would take a look at this and comment on the accuracy of this narrative, I really would appreciate it. If there is accuracy here about the parentage of William Grandstaff, it will help me enormously with my Grandstaff line. Thanks. Alice Walton Mason History of the Grandstaff Family Taken from a Moundsville W.Va. newspaper dated Monday Jan. 13, 1902 By George N. Fisher, September 30th, 1923 Though sometimes difficult, it is often interesting to trace the history of the families of the pioneers, whose bravery and love of adventure resulted in placing the early settlement and civilization in the Ohio Valley, which, prior to 1770, was an unbroken wilderness. If you will turn to Kercheval's History of the Valley of Virginia, chapter 8, page 110, you will find that in 1758 a man by the name of John Stone, near what is called the White House in the Hocksville settlement, was killed by the Indians. Stone's wife with her infant child and a son about seven or eight years old, were taken off as prisoners. On the South Branch Mountain the Indians murdered Mrs. Stone and her infant, and took the boy and Grandstaff to their town. Grandstaff was about three years a prisoner and then got home. It is not positively known the exact relationship of the George Grandstaff to the ancestry of the numerous family now residing in this country but certain it is that about the year 1770, at the time the Tomilsons settled Moundsville, and the Zanes, Sheperds, Caldwells, Ogles, Wetzels, Kellers and others settled in Wheeling and on Wheeling Creek, a man by the name of Grandstaff, with his brothers, Adam Grandstaff, sister Rosie, came from the Valley of Virginia, near where the incident narrated above occurred, and settled on Wheeling Creek, in what is now Marshall County, near the mouth of Grandstaff Run, after whom the run was named. The maiden name of the wife of this Mr. Grandstaff cannot be learned and indeed his first name is unfortunately, unknown. This Mr. Grandstaff has a son Jacob who was born August 17, 1799. The father of Jacob was killed by the Indians, date unknown while burning bush in his clearing about a half mile below the mouth of Grandstaff's run. Jacob Grandstaff married, Sarah Rodefer, this Sarah Rodefer was the daughter of Barbary Bonnett, who died in 1884 at the advanced age of 102 years, at the residence of her son-in-law, Jacob Grandstaff. By reference to History and Indian War of Western Virginia, by DeHass, chapter 2, page 82, it will be seen that in 1772, Bonnet, Wetzel, Messrs, Silas Zane and many other hardy pioneers from the same region (near Fort Cumberland), men whose means influenced and contributed greatly toward breaking the power of the savages and subduing the country to the wants of civilization. This clearly shows that the Bonnets were also of the first settlers of the section. On the same page, it appears that when these settlers came to the forks of the Wheeling Creek, "the company separated, Wetzel, Bonnet and others going up Big Wheeling, while Zane and one or two brothers went down." The family of John Rodefer and Barbary (Bonnet) Rodefer were as follows: Sons- John, Jacob, Joseph, and Silas; daughters, Sarah, who married Jacob Grandstaff, Polly, who married Albert Davis; Peggie, who married Joseph Bell; and Elizabeth, who married Benjamin Aulton. All of these are now deceased. John Rodefer, the husband of Barbary Bonnet was a blacksmith, nailmaker, and distiller. He afterwards sold his place on Wheeling Creek and moved to Ohio, purchasing the land where Bellaire now stands, where he died at the age of 87 and his wife at the age of 86. The children of Jacob Grandstaff and Sarah (Rodefer) Grandstaff were: Sons-Samuel, John R. and William, Daughters; Maria, Barbara and Adaline. John R. Grandstaff, the son of Jacob and Sarah, from whom much of this information is derived was born September 12th, 1825 on Wheeling Creek, near where his grandfather settled and is hale and hearty at the advanced age of 86 years. He remembers of seeing Lewis Wetzel, Jacob Keller, Ezekiel and Alexander Caldwell and many others of the older inhabitants, and old Barbara Wetzel, the hand-loom weaver, and recalls many of the old manners and customs long forgotten and unknown to later generations. He married Joana W. Blake, daughter of Robert and Nancey Blake, and to them were born ten children, two sets of twins. His wife has been dead over 14 years. During the war he served in Company A. 7th W.Va. Regt. Inft. Vol and lost his right limb at Spottsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864, this being the same battle in which Col. J.H. Lockwood, who commanded the regiment was seriously wounded in the head. (2/25/99 transcribed from typewritten page found in the papers of Genevieve Hostutler Walton)

As the Pleasant Ridge researchers know, there is some question as to the parents of Ann Mason w/o Job Mason. A few months ago, I raised this question again outside of the list. Most replies were in the Ruckman camp even though the Marshall County marriage record (1845) states clearly Ann Richmond. One of the arguments used was that the "Fish Funeral Home" record at the Moundsville library listed Ann Ruckman as the mother of Jacob Giles Mason. He died about 1945? I was still, and remain, unconvinced, and while I had a few extra seconds today, I checked said record. Yes, the F.F.H. record lists Ann Ruckman as the mother, but it also lists the father as Jake Mason. Jacob Giles Mason had a grandfather Jacob Mason and an uncle Jacob Mason, but his father was Job Mason. It may,at some point, be proven that Ann was a Ruckman, and not a Richmond, but I'm still going with a county marriage record over a obviously flawed funeral home record written ~ 50 years after her death.Note: I am descended from Job and Ann R/R Mason through a sister of Jacob Giles Mason, Hannah Mason Robinson. Fellow Marshall County researchers, Yesterday I received an interlibrary loan copy of: History of the Pan-Handle: Being Historical Collections of the Counties of Ohio, Brooke, Marshall, and Hancock, West Virginia. By J. H. Newton, G. G. Nichols, and A. G. Sprankle This book contrasts nicely with: The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families A Genealogical History of the Upper Monongahela Valley (with surname Index) by Howard L. Leckey, Historian and I thought I would tell you how the books differ related to their genealogical use. "Tenmile" is more of a genealogical text, documenting the Tenmile Creek area of Southwestern, PA and it's surrounding area. There is a little history of this area and information on the settlement of particular places, Rev. War units, etc.; but most of the text documents particular people and particular families in the history of this area. Many actual geneaological charts comprise a significant part of this work. Oddly, the copy I have does not include an original copywrite date, but I think Leckey finished it in 1950 or slightly earlier. The second printing of "Tenmile," September 1997, includes a surname index. The text is 667 pages and the surname index is 54 pages so you can see this is not a small work. As "Tenmile" contains a surname index only (easily over 3000 surnames), looking up a particular person is more difficult depending on the number of pages the surmame is referenced. For example, my CHAMBERS appears on only 7 pages so that's not too hard to reference (alhough not so great for finding out info.), while HUGHES appears on more than 110 pages of this work! This translates into six separate Chambers individuals and thousands of Hughes family members. The surmane index also includes families that are documented in bold. If your family is referenced (like HUGHES) many more individuals from your family are included as opposed to individual references. For example, WILSON appears on 47 pages, but there are no WILSON family charts. By contrast KINCAID appears on only 27 pages, but there are 3 pages with a KINCAID family chart. Therefore, there are more individual Kincaids listed than Wilsons. Before I have return in this book, I will write the list with all of the surnames that have family charts associated with them in "Tenmile." "History of the Pan-Handle: . . " By Newton, Nichols, and Sprankle is much more of an academic, historical text than "Tenmile." These authors wrote "Pan-Handle" in 1879, so as a result it contains a much closer in time history of the West Virginia panhandle than if it were written today. A potential downside of this timing is that if your are hunting for events after, say, 1875, they are likely not included. The loaned copy of "Pan-Handle" I just received is a 1990 printing of 450, dense, very small print pages, plus supplement, appendencies, & index. The book begins with the Vikings!, Columbus, Sir Walter Raleigh, and many others; extensively covers Native Americans, then later documents the settlement of the pan-handle in fine detail - all reading not for the faint of heart! Fortunately, "Pan-Handle" contains a surname index that includes first names of the surnames listed (55 pages). Descripters about, or references to, individuals can give you a glimpse of our ancestor's lives. For example: "James Standiford, son of Skilton (sp) Standiford, was born in Harford county, Maryland, January 25, 1800, and came to West Virginia with his parents when quite young. James, when a young man, purchased 896 acres of land from John McLee of Wheeling, November 27, 1827, a part of which he cleared and erected a cabin. He was married to Ms. Eliza Smith, July 26, 1827. . . . . . " As you can see, "Panhandle" includes great information about individuals, yet it is more a history of the area. No genealogical charts are included, unlike "Tenmile." Hope this information helps in your search for information and missing links.
