Hi All, I have several Buchanans and McConnell who married into my McCreary line in the 1800's. I've figured out who the Buchanans are, but I am completely at loss with the McConnell,s Edward McConnell b abt 1830 married Amanda McCreary Sarah J McConnell b abt 1838 married William Buchanan William M. McConnell b abt 1874 married Martha McCreary. I would like to know the exact dates of birth and/or parents of these McConnells. I sure hope there are some McConnell researchers out there. Thanks, Sylvia

I am doing research on the Wilsons of Marshall County. My family moved to Marshall County sometime between 1847 and 1850. They are descended from Henry (born about 1796 in Ireland) and Sarah ( born about 1805 in Pennsylvania) Wilson. I do not know Sarah's maiden name. Henry and Sarah Wilson had 9 children, among them, my great-grandfather, John S. Wilson (born 1830). John and his wife, Nancy Null Wilson (born 1839) had 8 children. Their son, William Lincoln Wilson (born 1864) was my grandfather. Henry and Sarah and John and Nancy stayed in Marshall County. My grandfather moved back to Pennsylvania - settling in Washington County. I am interested in any information about this Wilson line and also related names : Muldoon, Griffin and Riffle. These surnames married into the Wilson line. Sincerely, Mary Wilson Novak [email protected]

Hamilton (From the unpublished manuscript, Indian Atrocities Along the Clinch, Powell and Holston Rivers, pages 7-8) On the morning of September 8, 1774, John Henry's family which consisted of a wife and three children were slain by the Shawnee Indians. The Henry family lived in Thompson's Valley on the south side of Rich Mountain, a short distance east of Plum Tree Gap, where they had settled in 1771. The details of the massacre are best told in a letter written by Lieutenant Arthur Campbell to Colonel William Preston, dated 9 September 1774. (1) "Sir, - Yesterday morning early, one John Henry was dangerously wounded upon Clinch, about four miles from Captain (Daniel) Smith's Station, and it is supposed his wife and three small children are taken prisoners. Henry was standing in his door when the Indians fired at him. His wife and children were in bed. He immediately ran to the woods and shortly after, accidentally met with old John Hamilton who concealed him in a thicket until he could go and alarm the fort and bring him assistance. Hamilton had the courage to go by Henry's house, but saw nothing either of the Indians, or the woman and children." "Afterward he took (met?) one Bradshaws on his way; who just before he came, was alarmed by some Indian sings in his cornfield. Bradshaws immediately set out for the settlement through the woods. After he came about three miles past the place where the mischief had been done in the morning, he came upon a place where about twelve or fifteen Indians had breakfasted; they leaving behind them some of their provisions. Afterwards he followed the track a small distance and found they escaped to steer their course toward this river. (Holston) He then made the best of his way toward the settlement in Rich Valley, which he alarmed last night and this morning, the principal part of which is just now arrived here in a distressed situation. I have sent out orders to this, add the two next companies on Holston, for all the men that have arms and ammunition to assemble tomorrow in order to patrol a few days in the Rich Valley, and some of the best hands (men) to go over and see what has become of Captain Smith, as he is very weak at his own Station, having only eight men, the last account, notwithstanding repeated orders and requests there has not gone out a man of Doack's or Herbert's (2) companies to join him." William Doack writing from Black Lick, on September 22, 1774, to Colonel William Preston, at Smithfield, states: (3) "Sir - Thursday night 8th of this ultimo information that hostilities had been committed that morning by some Indians on the head of Clinch, without delay gathered 17 men and went to the place where the damage was done. Using our utmost endeavors to make discoveries which way they had gone from that place, but in vain, John Henry is dangerously wounded, his wife and three small children captivated." Both William Doak and "old" John Hamilton were mistaken in saying that the wife and children of Henry had been captured and in some way, overlooked them, for they had been killed, scalped and piled up a short distance from the house, where they were later discovered. John Henry did not long survive his wounds. On the 30th of September, 1777, John Hamilton was granted administration on Henry's estate, with William and Rees Bowen, the latter killed at King's Mountain, and David Ward, Rees Bowen,'s son-in-law, as securities. Does anyone have access to the death records in Marshall County? I am searching for the death of Thomas Baylis (Bayless, Bayles etc.) who died between 1870 and 1880. He was listed with his wife Eliza in the 1870 census and in the 1880 census she is listed alone as a widow. Can anyone help? Thank you. Grace Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Is there anyone out there who does lookups of the Moundsville Echo. My father was my grandfather's executor and there is an entry in the list of expenses for a notice in the "Echo". This would have been late Dec 1921 or early Jan 1922. (Name of deceased is Thomas Henry Taylor). Thanks in advance. Cheers, twt

Hi to all: I think Jim Wiley has made an excellent suggestion for the motels in St Clairsville. It is about a 15-20 minute drive to Benwood from St Clairsville and it is all 4 lane highway. It will take a person about 45 minutes to make that trip from New Martinsville and much of the highway is 2 lanes and at night there are many deer along the road. The St Clairsville motels are also very close to the mall for those who like to shop. There are also a host of resturants in this area. There are also a few motels I can suggest if a person wants to stay in Wheeling. The Hampton Inn is very nice and it is just off I70 on old route 40 at 795 National Road. The phone number is 304-233-0440. The cost may be more than the St Clairsville motels but the Hampton is close to Ogleby. Also in downtown Wheeling, near the Jamboree, at 10th & Main Streets, is a Best Western. The phone number is 304-233-8500. I would steer clear of the motels in Moundsville & Glen Dale unless I just wanted a place to sleep. Most of the contractors who visit our plant stay in Wheeling or St Clairsville. Some stay in New Martinsville but Mitchell Plant is about 15 miles north of New Martinsville and New Martinsville is 38 miles south of Wheeling. Of course the northern Benwood city limit is at the southern tip of Wheeling. If you take the Benwood exit from State Route 2 you cannot miss Undos. At the bottom of the exit ramp you will hang a right, around the Benwood City Park. Take the next left and follow this street. When you get to the end of this street you will see Undos on the right side of the street. It is undo the bridge, that is where the name came from. I believe there are only 3 streets in Benwood which run north and south and 2 of them have one way traffic. The first street only has north bound traffic. The second street, the one you want to take, only has south bound traffic. Hope this helps, Vernon Anderson
Don't know about motels, etc. in Marshall County, but we have stayed in motels across the river, in St. Clairsville, a short drive away by I-70. There are three or four motels there, all at the exit for US 40 - Red Roof Inn, Days Inn, etc. All were pretty good, clean, and reasonably priced. There is a site for Belmont County (St. Clairsvile) giving particulars on motels, etc. and with a search you can probalby find it easily enough. I didn't keep a "bookmark" for it, unfortunately. jim + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + - James Wiley, AKA [email protected]
