    3. In 1810 John Harvey was born in Ohio/Marshall Co. Va./WV. He and some of his sisters are still in Marshall County in 1850. John and his young family went to Illinois in about 1856. Can anyone tell me who his parents were? Thanks Jean Logston

    3. Billy, I thought about telling the Ohio version of that story but I did not want to offend anyone by it. Since you have opened the subject, though, I guess I'm safe. There were 2 major migrations of Appalachians to Northeast Ohio. The first was in the years after the First World War and the second in the 1950's and 1960's. Many West Virginians came to work in the potteries, rubber mills and steel mills. When the first West Virginians came after the War, the locals soon began to search for a derogatory term with which to refer to them. The natives weren't very creative and the best that they could come up with was "Hoopies" because most of those iron barrel hoops came from a factory, I believe, in Wheeling. I don't know about anyone else but I take great pride in my 200+ years of WV heritage and wear the title "Hoopie" proudly! 1. WWVA Radio's Mine Bulletin Board
    2. Scott West
    3. While this request is pure genealogy, it may trigger some recollections of places family members worked. As a teenager in the 1970s, on the way from my grandparents' farm in far southeastern Marshall County, we'd listen to WWVA radio with Al Zeidman on Sunday afternoons. I well remember something called the "Mine Bulletin Board," during which the mines within broadcasting distance were listed and whether or not the miners had work that afternoon. I'm trying to recall the mines listed, and here's what I can remember: McIlroy Mine -- Moundsville Operations, Ireland Mine, Shoemaker Mine, Blacksville Mine and Tipple, Windsor Mine, and Valley Camp Coal Co. (but can't remember which mines were announced.) Any readers have similiar recollections and mind sharing them with me? You may email me directly, or if Linda, you think this is worth posting, on the Marshall Co. page. When I'm back in the Northern Panhandle and listening to WWVA on Sunday afternoons, I miss hearing the Mine Bulletin Board and ol' Al Zeidman. Just another piece of our childhood now gone. Lewis is listed as a convict in the 1850 Marshall County census and is the son of Amos and Matilda Terrill. The 1916 marriage record of Charles R. Terrill should give the name of his mother. His Social Security record is another place to verify his mother's maiden name. Billy
