Good Morning, I have recently discovered that some of my potential ancestors were listed on various census' as "Mulatto". I did not find this disturbing, except for the fact that we had been told all of our lives we were French/Black Dutch/Indian. I also had been having lots of difficulty tracing most of my LUCAS ancestors. These people we located mostly in Appalachia, VA; WV: KY; TN; A very kind lady put me onto the MELUNGEON idea the other day, and thought it may be helpful to others. If you have ancestors who may have been Native American, and you are having trouble finding them, you might want to check out the following : http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mtnties/melungeon.html http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mtnties/mlgnlinks.html http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Inn/1024/ I may have broken through one brick wall already, in two days. Have a great weekend.

Did you know that the American flag was first carried into battle at the Battle of Brandywine on SEPTEMBER 11, 1777? Thought this was an interesting date. Realize this is not genealogy. Promise not to make a habit of it. Happy Valentine's Day to you all Hazel

I am seeking information on William O. Powell, who was a farmer in what is now Marshall County in the mid-1800s. William O. was born about 1802, married Mary Jefferson, daughter of John and Elizabeth Jefferson, Aug 18, 1857. He was 55 at the time and a widow. Mary was 46. His first wife was also named Mary and she apparently died in the early 1850s. He had five sons. One, William S., born about 1840, was an educator in Marshall County, and at one time served on the Board that tested and certified teachers, including my great aunt Maude Jefferson. Please contact me at wchad@aol.com. Bill Chaddock

Is there a kind soul near the courthouse who would be willing to do a look-up for me? I am in need of information from the marriage bonds of the following two marriages: 1) Rebecca Burge to Henry Lancaster - 30 November 1845 2) Eli Burge to Katherine Piles - 30 November 1845 I am in need of all information on the bonds. If anyone is feeling REALLY generous, I would also love to have any information from wills, chancery records, probate records, and land deed records for the Burge surname. I am trying to verify the children of Elijah Burge and Elizabeth Goddard. I have believed the two Burges mentioned in the marriages above were children of Elijah Burge and Elizabeth Goddard. A couple of descendants of this line have challenged my thinking with some information that I had not previously considered. My dilemma is as follows: I had Eli and Rebecca as children of Elijah Burge and Elizabeth Goddard. The marriages above did occur as I have copies of the minister's record from the courthouse. They were married the same day and by the same minister. This has caused me to believe they were brother and sister. There is an Elijah Burge who was married to a Sarah in the 1850 census that was apparently living next to Elijah Burge and Elizabeth Goddard. (Based on family numbers in the census) It is possible that a family would name one son Eli and another Elijah. But, it may be that my Eli and Rebecca are not children of Elijah and Elizabeth. I want to be sure that my line is correct. I am hopeful someone can provide some information that will either confirm or refute my thinking. I would appreciate the book and page numbers for anyone willing to tackle this task for me. Billy Curtis - Lake Wales, FL

I also do not know if you are familiar with Linda Fluharty's Marshall County page and I don't want to be redundant on what you do have. I did a quick 5 minute cursory check of her page and some of my CD's and found the following information: John Harold Knight s/o George and Mary Knight in the 1900 Meade District Census. Marriage records indicate John Harold Knight married Madge Jones on 28 June 1910 in Moundsville, Marshall, WV. There is a record of marriage between a George C. Knight and Mollie M. (possibly Mary) Morrow on 17 March 1876. These are probably his parents. John Harold Knight and Madge L. Knight are buried at Halcyon Hills, Marshall Co, WV. The census info also listed siblings. I didn't look up Madge's line, but it is probably also there. If you haven't seen Linda's site, you are missing out on a blessing. She has the best county site on the web! Billy
