I know that it was founded in 1887 in Wheeling and then moved to Elm Grove in 1894. It closed for a time after 1978 and then reopened in 1989. I found a reference to it on the back of my husband's(deceased) Baptismal Certificate (Baptized at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Logan WV (now closed) in 1939. I don't know whether he was ever there or not, but It's curious to be on the back of the certificate. Thanks for any assistance.

    3. Hello ALL, Thanks everyone for their help, information and support in the Angies Site fiasco. Here is what I have done. We spent all weekend changing our passwords to absolutely everything! I have reported the Spam to my ISP, the ISP where the email originated from. Hopefully, something will put a stop to these people (person). However, I think that as soon as we start putting on the pressure, the site will start up under some other disguise. The ONLY 2 sites I used the password at that was listed in the email are: Ancestry.com, and Genealogy.com. they both swear they do not/have not sold or given away any personal information! That leaves just two possibilities. !. They have hacked into one of those two sites and stolen the information. 2. They have hacked into my computer and stolen the information. Neither prospect is very comforting. I will continue to run my Norton, with updates as often as they have them. We are planning on installing a firewall. Hopefully, this will help. I have received approximately 10 emails from people who have had the same thing happen to them! Please notify your ISP's, and forward the entire email (they need all the headers) to Email: abuse@ATTBI.COM This is Angie's site ISP. PLEASE CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS!!! Again thanks to all. I have a few emails to answer personally, and will do that this morning. Joyce A much "smarter" user near Seattle

    3. Hi, I have not been on my computer much lately, but, the other morning I rec'd. the following email. I have removed two lines of this email as contained my personal "password" that I use for my genealogy sites. The headers read FROM: Angie's Genealogy SUBJECT:Free Genealogy Lookup Site (50 Million Names) Site location:: http://12.237.150.30 Send reply messages through my web site, not this email address. * DELETED 2 LINES < Do not enter the "/" and make sure you enter the above separately. Example: (johndoe@mail.com/pswd1/1012345678) You would enter 1012345678 when it ask for your confirmation number, enter johndow@mail.com at the enter email address, and enter pswd1 at the enter password. If you have trouble with the login, go back to the site location above and hit the troubleshooting button. Please keep this email for a record of your login. **** END **** I tried replying to this message, asking where/how this person acquired this information. The email came back to me as undeliverable. As this had my personal password on it, I have to believe that some "reputable"? on-line site is selling/giving away our email addresses and passwords. Does anyone know who I can contact about this? Does anyone use this site? Thanks, Joyce

    1. Re: WVMARSHA-D Digest V02 #41
    2. A tomahawk deed was really very simple. The person claiming a portion of land, would mark off his territory by notching a tree on each corner with a tomahawk. The practice was common and accepted by everyone. Even Mason and Dixon, when marking off their famous dividing line, used the method and were stated as marking the trees "with four good notches." Sometimes the land claimer - if he knew how to write - would mark the trees with his initial. Anyone trying to "jump a claim" by changing these markings was treated very harshly, and often shot on the spot. The practice was so common - there not being a courthouse near in most areas - that when a courthouse was opened the deeds were accepted the same as a purchase agreement would have been. Gee, no closing costs... no points ... no mortage... just a few notches in a tree trunk - ah, yes, those were the good old days. Susie Koehrsen

    1. Tomahawk deed
    2. > Does anyone know where I would look for deeds registered under a > Can anyone give a more detailed explanation of the "Tomahawk Deed"? My search is for the Kimble & Givens families. They were in the Greene/Washington County area of PA in the late 1700s and early 1800s; before migrating to the Belmont and Monroe Counties of Ohio In 1776 John KIMBLE b/1743 in Frederick Co., VA d/1819(as per will) in Washington Co., PA. Online from Ginny Core, I find........ 12 Jan 1776 Land on RACCOON CREEK was originally purchased from six Indian chiefs of the United Nations. The bill of sale listed each chief and tribe, called a 'TAMAHAWK DEED'. Registered in Philadelphia, PA and Augusta, VA. I am also seeking info on Daniel GIVENS who witnessed the Will of John KIMBLE in 1819 Any assistance appreciated Audrey

    1. Tomahawk Claims
    2. Hello, If there are any records of a "tomahawk claim" they would be in Ohio County, as Marshall County wasn't formed until 1835. Another possibility is records from Virginia as the area wasn't fully "civilized" until after the Revolutionary War. Joel M. Robinson

    1. Deeds & Tomahawk Claims
    2. I thought I would re peat my question of the other day and put a new heading on it. Does anyone know where I would look for deeds registered under a "tomahawk" claim? Are they still in the Land office in Marshall or Ohio Counties, or would I have to send for them elsewhere? Thanks, Pam

    1. Round Bottom
    2. Hello, 1.) Round Bottom is just south of Moundsville along the Ohio River/WV Rte. 2, generally, from the mouth of Big Grave Creek, (near the State Police Barracks/Sewage Plant) south to Washington Lands. This bend in the Ohio River, just south of Moundsville, is, I believe, the sharpest one in the river. It was referred to as "Devil's Elbow" or "Devil's Bend" by rivermen, according to a late employer, Joe Bettinazzi, of mine who worked on the river before going into the mines. At times while traveling "south" on WV Rte. 2, one is actually going almost north! I watched many barges crash into the riverbank when I was a bartender at the Prima Marina. 2.) The town/area south of Wellsburg, WV is Beech Bottom. 3.) Yes, all of what is now WV was part of VA in 1798. There were some disputes with PA about the Northern Panhandle, but I think those were settled by that time. 4.) Round Bottom Hill is the hill above the river bend/Round Bottom. Joel M. Robinson
