    3. Anita, Years ago someone on one of the rootswebs talked about the possibility of losing their files, due to fire, theft or computer crashing. I talked with my son who repairs computers for a living and he recommended buying an external hard drive and backing up everything onto the hard drive. So I bought a 500g external hard drive and once a week I pull it out of the safe and back up all my files. I have an older version of FTM, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the newer version probably has but I like it, I don't store my info anywhere except on my computer and the backup. Jim Skaggs - May 19, 2009 View | Viewers Categories: Genealogy FTM Program Hi Folks: I know many of you are using FTM as your genealogy program to record your research. A WORD TO THE WISE. If your database is getting very large (600 megabytes or more). Take the time and immediately split your datafiles into two or more different files. Don't be like me and several other folks who has learned the HARDWAY. If your computer hard-drive fails or if you decide to change computers and if your datafiles is exceptionally large, you may experience a failure on restriving and restoring your datafiles back into your FTM program. If you can still back up your files on a CD - you shouldn't encounter any problems only if it is larger than what a CD (standard) can hold (NOT YOUR HIGHSPEED AND HIGH DENSITY DISK THAT CAN HOLD more than the standard 650 megabytes. You can't use the HIGH DENSITY TYPE CD's to back up your FTM anyway. I have been using my "Jump Drive" to back up my database periodically over the years since jump-drive came out and gotten popular. I never had any problems of restoring my FTM Genalogy program at times when I had computer problems or change computers. It wasn't that large. However, over the years and more and more data is stored, your database grows. You won't have any problems back it up on a jump drive, the problem is getting it restored back. I have a good file (.fbc) back up file for FTM; however due to the size of my database which is 1.2 Gigabytes, I have NOT BEEN ABLE to get my database restored back on my computer into the FTM Program. I have called Ancestry (FTM Department) and talked to one of their computer "geeks" and that how I learned that I have not been the only one that has called with the problem of getting their files restored. He mentioned 600 Megabytes. The 1st thing he ask me was the size of my datafiles. His suggestion was for me to try to starting and rebooting my computer to a "SAFE BOOT" and reinstall my FTM Program and try restoring my file back to FTM from my jump-drive and hard-drive. I HAVE TRIED AT LEAST 50 or more times but to NO AVAIL. If I ever do get it back, I will be spliting it into at least 4 different files. I'm sending this so that ONE WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED AND CAUSE YOU A LARGE HEART ACHE! 3. If I can add my two cents worth, I have the same thing Johnny, a 500g external hard drive and I keep it hooked up to USB port on my PC at all the times but keep it turned off when I am not using FTW. I have had no problems with it. Since a virus goes to the drive where the Operating system is, it is safe from virus's Ralph ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Evans" <jegto@windstream.net> To: <wvlogan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 01, 2009 6:44 PM Subject: Re: [WVLOGAN] FTM version 16 > Anita, > > Years ago someone on one of the rootswebs talked about the possibility of > losing their files, due to fire, theft or computer crashing.
