    3. Jane, Not a stupid question, but I have no idea.  I personally have been seriously considering getting an external hard drive for ONLY my research.  That way if my computer should crash, I will still have all of my files. 3. Since you all are talking about it... I would recommend an online backup service. Some are reasonable priced like Carbonite. The reason being there are very few individuals to regularly backup anything. As an IT professional, I know that I have a hard enough time making sure my customers business information is backed up on a regular basis let alone my own stuff. I have FTP space that I copy my data to on my webserver, but you may not have that luxury. Carbonite used to be about $50/yr which is very reasonable. It runs in the back ground and makes updates anytime a file is changed. You don't have to remember anything (other than making sure the icon is in the system tray). External hard drives FAIL, USB flash drives FAIL. I've seen a USB flash drive literally burn up before my eyes. My web hosting service makes backups of their servers so I don't have to and I know it's going to be there. Around here where I live flooding is a huge problem especially with Hurricanes and nor-easters, having all your data in your home is NO GUARANTEE that you are safe. Your house may burn down (this happened to one of our business customers who had a great backup, but it was on an external drive that MELTED during the fire. The data was able to be recovered but at a cost of $8000. Off site backup is the most secure by far.
