    1. Re: [WVLOGAN] Chapman Question
    2. Johnny, I don't know why you got a mail box unknown message. My husband's grandfather, Joseph "Joe" Franklin Chatman was born 3 Mar 1878 in Stokes County, NC and died 11 Sep 1963 in Winton-Salem, Forsyth County, NC He married my husband's grandmother Maggie Freeman (Feb 1880 - 8-13-24) on 21 Dec 1901 in Winston, Forsyth County, NC. Joe and Maggie had four children who survived childhood. Joe later married Pearl Welch (7-15-04 - 3-12-99) and fathered three more children. Joe and Maggie were of the Moravian faith and were buried in the Moravian Cemetery in Winston-Salem, NC. Joe's parents were William Thomas Chapman/Chatmon,Chatman (abt. 1841- abt. 1903) and Mary Jane Rierson 1943-1926). Joe's birth certificate lists his father's name and his name as Chatmon; however, the earlier census records list the name as Chapman. Most of William's children (I have information on 10 out of 11) used the Chatman name; however, William's brother Robert and his children used Chapman. All of Joe's children were listed as Chatman. Can't read or write was listed on the older census records so I don't know if the name was originally Chapman or Chatman. Apparently, William's father Charles Fleming Chapman (abt 1907- abt 1850) who married Parthenia Wall (abt. 1813 - aft 1880) moved his family from Halifax County, Va. to Stokes County, NC sometime prior to 1850. We have a few old pictures and Joe appears to have dark hair and a moustache. At least one of the pictures dates to late 1910 or early 1911 (the baby in the picture was born in Sept. 1910). According to my husband Grandpa Joe had an eye for the ladies. I hope this information helps Marie In a message dated 3/9/2009 3:23:46 P.M.
